2 Texts for Reflection Deuteronomy 30:19 Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you. Matthew 5:37 37 Let your word be Yes, Yes or No, No ; anything more than this comes from the evil one. Reflections from Lent Event 2014 Lent begins in a couple of weeks on Ash Wednesday, 5th March. Our congregation has the opportunity to participate in Lent Event, a vibrant movement of church communities and people across the globe, stepping up to partner in God s bigger picture of renewal and restoration. Indeed it was encouraging to learn that last year quite a number of congregations in the USA, New Zealand and South Africa also joined this UnitingWorld initiative. As we worship, study, reflect and pray during the 40 days of Lent, we will also give practical expression to our church s witness of God s compassion and justice. We will build genuine connections with the overseas partners of the Uniting Church and journey with them into a future of hope. How? By participating in the range of activities offered by UnitingWorld through Lent Event, including a Bible Study, written by immediate Past President, the Reverend Alistair Macrae; a resource to guide Worship; a Children s Resource and an exciting initiative for Youth called Give it UP for Lent. Today we will see two short videos about Lent Event. As we nourish ourselves through worship, study, reflection and prayer, we are also encouraged to embrace simple living and set aside material goods for the 40 day Lenten period. In Jesus forty days in the wilderness, without earthly comfort, he found sustenance in his relationship with God. We are similarly invited to participate in an expression of God s mercy and grace by donating any money saved during this time to support the life-changing community development projects of UnitingWorld. UnitingWorld supports community development projects with partner churches in Asia, Africa and the Pacific. The projects focus on building the capacity of local communities to live healthy and well-resourced lives. Projects include training midwives in South Sudan, education in North India and Partnering with Women for Change in the Pacific. See more at Reflections Recently I visited two UC parish missions: Chapel by the Sea, at Bondi, and Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross. Both are similar to PM and all are unique. Chapel by the Sea has multiple properties including commercial properties for rent, and child care centres. Wayside has one property. Both provide meals through a café arrangement. Both have a chapel that is incorporated into the complex though a common entrance. Wayside has a new building that includes a rooftop community garden, Bondi are planning to install a rooftop community garden. The entrance to Wayside is through the Café. The chapel is in the centre accessed through glass sliding doors from the café. The café still functions even when there is a funeral in the chapel, because that is who they are. The café at Wayside is open all day to 8 pm, and serves meals for $3. Everyone pays as an expression of inclusion and dignity. Both Bondi and Wayside have a single entrance for their programs, so whether someone is there for a playgroup, a program like day to day living, attending worship, homeless seeking help, all receive the same welcome. Both share hospitality with meals. Wayside hold a sponsored community lunch every Thursday, attended by the middle class of Potts Point as well as homeless and all staff. Every Sunday after church there is a roast dinner prepared by the café held in the café, attended by the whole congregation and people in the community. On Christmas Day they have a street party. Like PM, both Wayside and Bondi seek to relate to all people who live in the area, not only the homeless. Like PM, both are reinventing themselves in this work. Wayside is probably further down the path in doing this. Both have art programs; Wayside has art graffiti on the purple chapel walls. Wayside s Opportunity Shop, which looks like any modern Kings Cross shop, has clothes donations from a broad cross-section of the community, and the day Dianne Hart and I were there, the shoppers looked middle class. Both these missions are seeking to engage with the broadest cross-section of people in society, which means they are constantly evolving in what they do and how they do it. Both are developing ways of connecting with high rise residents. Like Parramatta Mission, both Wayside and Chapel by the Sea have a focus on building community. Waysides slogan is Love over hate, while Bondi s is Creating Community for Good. Each endeavours to shape everything they do in alignment with their core vision. You might like to check out their websites. It is always good to have a look at others and gain ideas. Blessings, Keith Hamilton Blessings, Keith Hamilton

3 Drying Off Explained In the olden days in Fiji, the only mode of transport over the ocean was by canoe. Everything on board will be wet from the sprays of the waves. When the traveller arrives, the village will welcome him with garlands, fine mats, tapa, and great lengths of cloths which symbolically dries off the spray. The men celebrate with Kava and everyone eats. Many Fijians no longer practice this today in the age of aeroplanes,. This was Junia s first overseas trip as a soldier and he was now home safely. The community gathered in Plumpton. The Minister said special prayers. His father s family pampered him with all the colourful paraphernalia. Then his mother s family reciprocated. Finally, we all sat down to a hearty feast of roast pork and Fijian gourmet. Sa mai vakacegu vakadua na Qase Levu, na Peresitedi ni Lotu Wesele mai Viti, Rev. Dr. Tuikilakila Waqairatu, yabaki 66. He went overseas for 4 months, doing Peacekeeping & Riot Control in Thailand, Combat Mission & Patrols in Singapore and Humantarian work in the Philippines. His family welcomed him home with a Drying Off Ceremony. Leigh Congregation Sunday Leigh - 'Smile-a-thon'! Today at Sunday School we are going to have a special visitor - our friend Rebecca! - who will speak with us about KCO (Kids' Camp Out') plus speak with the Junior High & High School/ Young Adults classes about the up & coming Lent Event 2014 and her own experiences with "giving something up" for Lent and helping to raise funds for others in need. We are also going to have a 'Smile -a-thon' today as part of our 'HAPPY' campaign, with the children's 'Smile' photos and jokes soon to feature in a display - along with other Sunday School art work - in the Coffee Shop. Next Sunday, JH & HSYA will be having their first 'Q & A with Keith' session for Sunday School enquiries: Liz & teachers. NB: Today, when our Sunday School children leave during the Passing of the Peace, we request that any Sunday School parents/ caregivers or Helpers who did NOT come to the Coffee Shop for a briefing last week - please join us for 10 mins to complete some forms etc. Thank you. Sunday School 'Hope' Mural & Herb Garden Update The 'Hope' Mural continues to be well received by Meals Plus clients, visitors & staff alike. Similarly, the Herb Pots donated by Ken are thriving, and all the various potted plants in the courtyard are being very well cared for by both staff & clients. Please don't hesitate to help yourself to a handful of herbs - sweet basil, thyme, mint etc - from time to time so that the herbs get thoroughly used and enjoyed. It's also great to think that this special area of our church may be utilized by additional visitors during the 'Parramatta Lanes' program this year! Thanks to all contributors/ helpers. Further suggestions for the Courtyard include additional greenery, a children's area, a water feature & more murals. Cleaning Issues - Coffee Shop & Hall A number of issues relating to cleanliness in the Coffee Shop, toilets and hall area have been raised recently & are currently being followed up. All groups accessing these areas are kindly reminded to follow the procedures set out via signage in the kitchen & toilet areas and to assist by disposing of all rubbish thoughtfully. Many thanks. Planning Committee - Women's High Tea, Saturday 17 May 2014 Next Sunday 23 February during morning tea time, there will be a preliminary meeting of the High Tea Planning Committee. In addition to our regular members, we would be happy to welcome new contributors. The more the merrier! If you would like to assist, please just come along or speak with Julie, Darlene or Liz for further information. Please also place the High Tea date in your diaries for what will be a very meaningful and fun event.
