The dea Is that travelers would spend Chrstmas n Mexco Cty, fly over to Mam for the New Year's Day celebratons and return to New York after the holday travels. The cost for all ths transportaton, whch ncludes thousands of mles, s $98.. And, whle $98 s a lot of money, that s a surprsngly low rate for such a long-dstanct trp. Before the advent of arlners, Such a trp could not have been made n adequate tme avalable to most people durng thq, holdays for anythng lke ths cost. Not only has the cost been cut down to a pont where many Amercans can afford such a luxury, but the travel tme requred s so short that the holday excursonst fnds hmself wth plenty of free tme to vst n far-away ctes. We are not boostng any partcular mode of travel, for they all have tllr. good ponts and ther weaknesses, but we pont out that the average Amercan today enjoys travel luxures never before known n ths world at a prce mllons can afford to pay. We can fly from coast to coast for less than $, we can fly overnght to London and can do both wthout mssng a meal, f we choose to travel at nght. Had such schedules been predcted thrty even years ago, many would have thought the dea rdculous, whch shows how fast transportaton has progressed n our era. Opnons of Others Safe Drvng Day Presdent Esenhower recently named December 5 as "Safe Drvng Day," and asked all Amercans to help make that day one n our country's hstory on whch no traffc accdents occur. If such a goal could be acheved, t would be of great sgnfcance, snce on every day of the year approxmately Geventy-flve Amercans are klled and hundreds njured n automoble accdents. The Presdent lad * down three rules whch he sad would save lves and prevent njures, f followed:. Obey all traffc regulatons.. Use common sense n exhbtng courtesy and good sportsmanshp whle drvng.. Every motorst should resolve to stay alert and exercse care, beng, aware of the constant threat of accdents caused by neglgence. The dea of settng asde one day n the year as Safe Drvng Day s a good one and proclamatons wll be ssued by Governors n the varous States, and other offcals. The ntenton s to get all motorsts aware of the great need for carefulness on the hghways and Safe Drvng Day wll focus attenton on a problem whch klls tens of thousands of Amercans each year. tectln! the naton ugltust the Communst conspracy has also ended? It does not. Qutt contrary. It means that Congress now has u golden opportunty to take a fresh look at Its methods qf conductng Investgatons Into subversve actvtes and to Improve them. The elmnaton of Mr. McCarthy from a poston of nfluence wll be of ncalculable beneft to Congress and to the naton In the determned and contnung tght agulnst communsm; but much of the beneft can be lost unless both houses of Congress undertake a serous reform of ther nvestgatve processes and do so as early as possble n the next sesson. The problem Is nothng new. Varous proposals have been before ether of both houses for years. But the censure resoluton, the heghtened nterest n the whole queston of Congressonal nvestgatons, the shockng examples of abuses that ar«fresh n the publc mnd all, combne to make ths the deal tme for real progress. We urge, as we have urged for a long tme, that serous attenton be gven the Idea of a Jont Congressonal commttee to Investgate subversve, actvtes. It would elmnate the vulgar rvalry for headlnes J,h»t sometmes takes place between commttees of both houses; and. f care were taken to appelnt to It truly responsble legslators, as n the case of the Jont Commttee on. Atomc Energy, we mght at last have a vehcle for nuet and effectve work n ths'feld. Other, less drastc, reforms n the rules of procedure have been proposed by the Watklns 4 commttees have actually nsttuted new rules of ther own and have operated satsfactorly under them. But no matter how vrtuous some ndvdual commttees may be, what s needed s a general standard set by the Senate and by the House as a whole. The proposals, for a jont commttee on subversve actvtes and for general revson of toe rales for nvestgatng commttees are mutually exclusve. Whatever formula s worked out, t s essental that the new leadershp In Congress undertake ser#us acton and carry It forward to a meanngful concluson, The New York Tmes WORDS, WORDS" We bow low before Kd, the canne lady, who on command can pck out the man wearng a red te wth a bt of blue n t. \ye bow also before Ktd's tnerull master and the patence t must have taken to teach her meanngs for som, words. Commssoner McLean revealed hs plans for a more vgorous approach and a new era n State park and forest management at a recent pre-yuletde conference of recreaton and garden club offcals here. Governor Meyner wll request the frnds from the 955 Legslature so that the program of general face lftng of all State parks may begn as soon as possble. n all State forests and parks there are only 48 cabns ready for publc occupancy at the present tme, Commssoner McLean emphaszes. From a statstcal standpont, he ponts out, ths means that durng the three summer months New Jersey's cabn facltes can accomodate only four ten thousandths of one per cent of the total populaton of New Jersey. On Sundays, at one park that s ^axed to capacty, vstors lned up durng the past summer before the gates were opened. They had pcnc baskets, pots and pans, bab^ carrages, deck chars and card tables Intent on spendng the day. The early arrvals get far chance at the facltes, the late arrvals nothng. Under the McLean plan, exstng cabn oolonles would be Increased to the lmt. In the popular State parks, 45 addtonal pcnc tables and 45 freplaces wll be constructed. New bathhouses and prvate dwellngs are planned so that park employees wll be able to lve on the premses. Parkng space, adequate concesson areas and power lnes are also part of the program as well as equpped traler stes so popular n many stages. Meyner of New Jersey beleves Presdent Esenhower wll secure more support from Democrats n the 84th Congress whch convenes on January than the members of hs own party. On foregn ssues, the Governor ponts out the Republcan Senators "are splt rght down the mddle" wth Calforna Senator Knowland urgng the use of the "bg stck" by ths country In' ts dealngs wth Communsts and Presdent Esenhower advocatng a "take t easy" atttude m order to prevent a trm-d World War. Democrats, he sad, would probably go all out to prevent war and because of ths atttude wll very probably be on the Presdent's sde durng the next two yeaa On eate Issues, the Governor clams the thoughts of New Jersey Republcans do not concde wth those of Presdent Esenhower. He ponted out that he has receved word from the Unted States Department of Labor that Presdent Esenhower wants the respectve states to ncrease unemployment benefts. Ths year Republcans n \he Legslature flatly rejected hs recommendatons to Increase unemployment benefts from $ to 4 per week Governor Meyner s hopeful that when the Legslature reconvenes on January such a bll mght be adopted, but observers feel such*ctlon s very doubtful.
