5 DECEMBER DELIGHTS Major Objective: Children will develop awareness of the colors, sights, sounds, events, and seasonal changes, including the effects of winter on daily life, that characterize December. Things lb Do: Make cut-paper snowflakes to give your room a glistening winter look! (s) (4) Use the patterns in this book to make decorations for doors, windows, desks, etc. (2) C,) Let the children use any of the patterns in this book to make stained glass pictures: 1. Use white chalk to trace around a pattern on black construction paper. 2. Add details and designs. 3. Cut out the spaces between the chalk lines (leave a black border around the picture). 4. Paste a sheet of wax paper to the back of the black paper. 5. Paste pieces of colored tissue paper inside the spaces. Make evergreen scenes! Have each child fold a sheet of green construction paper in half and draw half a tree against the fold. Let the children paste their trees on construction paper and add snow with white chalk. 9 Send the letter to parents (page 10) home to announce the month's activities and to ask for donations for your materials collection. 6 M A I Dear Parents, Happy holidays! It's December, and that means there's lots of seasonal festivity and fun in our classroom! This month will be an exciting time for your child. During the coming weeks, we will study the weather and how it affects daily life, and we will learn about the customs and traditions of winter holidays. Your child will bring home activities, projects, crafts, decorations, recipes and other wonderful things to share with you. You can continue your child's learning fun at home by: n observing and discussing the weather with your child (use the "Weather-Go-Round" your child will bring home) sharing with your child holiday traditions that are unique to your family helping your child to make holiday decorations (use the "Holiday Play Clay" recipe your child will bring home) reading holiday and "wintertime" books with your child You can also help with our projects at school by donating decorative wrapping paper, colored tissue paper, ribbons, bows and other holiday materials. Plan to come by the room before or after school one day this month to see what we are doing in December!
