3 Feature Article Grandma Amos Mary Stephens Amos (and James Amos) in Warren County, Iowa by Marieta A. Grissom, CG The year was 1831, a pivotal year in United States history, even ough e events are not memorized in school. The year also marked e bir of a child, Mary Emily Stephens, who became a remarkable woman. Newspapers were numerous in 1831, spreading news of current events to e masses. On 12 February an eclipse of e sun was visible along e eastern seaboard, an event so heralded by e newspapers beforehand, at e eclipse itself seemed anti-climatic. 1 Nat Turner, a Virginia slave, led a group of slaves on a murdering rampage. 2 Congress and e Supreme Court considered e removal of e Cherokee Nation from Georgia, 3 The feud between President Andrew Jackson and Vice President John C. Calhoun was fodder for newspapers. The two differed on e role of e Union and e states. Then a scandal erupted involving Jackson s personal life, undermining his effectiveness. To regain control Jackson was forced to ask his cabinet to resign. 4 Oer items in 1831 probably didn t make newspaper headlines across e country, but e events no less impacted history. On 4 July 1831, honoring e country s fifty-fif anniversary a choir in Boston sang My country, tis of ee for e first time. 5 Cyrus McCormick, Virginia farmer, tested his mechanical reaper. 6 In Philadelphia, a steam-powered railroad car made its inaugural trip, one and a quarter miles. 7 John James Audubon toured eastern states from New York to Florida, studying and drawing birds. 8 And, protracted camp meetings fired religious revivalism. 9 On 4 July, James Monroe, former President, died in poverty. 10 And, before year s end, a cholera epidemic entered United States from Europe. 11 Natural phenomena, politics, religion, industry, currency, mass media, racial struggles, transportation, and disease were all part of e lives of Americans in Into is world, Mary Emily Stephens was born on 13 September in Virginia , Marieta A. Grissom, Certified Genealogist; 505 West Jackson Avenue, Indianola, IA , Marieta.Grissom@msn.com. Ms. Grissom has actively researched her many Iowa pioneer ancestors since She was awarded certificate no. 990 in March 2009 by e Board for Certification of Genealogists Masur, Louis P., 1831 Year of Eclipse, New York: Hill and Wang, 2001, Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Ibid., Warren County, Iowa, Dea Book 4:16, Mary Emily Amos died 18 February 1933, age 101 years, 5 mons and 5 days old, bir date calculates 13 September 1831.

4 Mary lived to be 101, an awesome wonderment for a pioneer woman. As she approached centenarian status, e local newspapers duly noted her birdays wi an interview, likely a relished assignment for e reporter. Grandma Amos, as everyone called her, related her stories in straightforward manner. But e life events she described probably awed e listener. Today her stories are still amazing. The family s struggles, assiduous work eic, perseverance rough hardship, resolve in adversity, and unique patriotism emerge. Because ese stories were printed in e newspapers, readers today know many details about her life. None of Mary s remembrances mention any of e national events at took place during her lifetime, let alone e ones at took place during her bir year, but ere is no doubt at consequences of many of e 1831 events affected her life. Perhaps e first one took place when she was a mere infant. She was born in Rockingham County, Virginia. When she was about one year old, her parents moved to Madison County, Ohio, where she grew up. Wheer her family fled Virginia in response to growing racial tensions is not known, but ey moved to a non-slave state. When she was about eighteen, her family moved furer west to Knox County, Illinois. 13 Her early life en became symbolic of e westward, anti-slavery movement. Mary Emily Stephens and James Monroe Amos married on 27 August For four years, ey lived on a rented farm in Knox County, worked hard, and accumulated nearly $ James Amos knew land in Iowa was cheaper an in Illinois. 16 He wanted to take a look, en return for his family if he liked it, 17 but Mary was spunky and wouldn t hear of it. I told him just to wait two or ree weeks until we got e spinning and weaving done and could get our cloes ready and we would all come togeer and make one trip do it. Thus, in e fall of 1854, e husband, wife and two small girls, journeyed westward to Warren County, Iowa. 18 Mary continued, We started for Iowa in a covered wagon drawn by horses. A great many oers drove oxen, but my husband always had horses. We arrived in Warren County in early November and entered ree forties 19 and preempted forty acres of timber. By preemption we were given first right to enter e land at a later date. 20 They selected a site in e timber, built a 12x14 foot log cabin wi grass growing on e dirt floor, and lived ere e first winter. By living in e timber, James was close by as he spent e winter cutting logs for a house and splitting rails for fences. Their two little girls, Orra and Laura, were joined by a ird daughter, Ida. In e spring ey built a house on eir ree forties farm and sold eir rights to e timber forty for $ She spoke on, Money was scarce. I remember at Amos bought a spade from Mose Barker and Mose inquired if he had e money to pay for it. One time he was worried over getting his corn planted. We had no money to hire hands. I told him to put e cover on e wagon and put e cradle in it. I put a couple of comforts in e wagon and we went to e field. The two little girls and e baby staying in e wagon and I dropped corn. They got along just fine. [Mr.] Amos would mark out e rows, I d drop e corn, and en he would come along and 13. I could drop as fast as he could mark and cover and we got e crop planted in good shape wiout paying out anying for hired labor. 22 During e national struggle between e Nor and e Sou, James and Mary struggled on eir farm. And, like eir country, ey experienced bo life and dea. Five children were born: Nancy, John, James Liberty, Mary, and Lourena. 23 Then, in June 1863 a severe epidemic of dipheria tragically took e lives of Ida, 8, Nancy, 6, and John, 4, in less an two weeks. 24 The local epidemic continued into e fall. A few miles away, between 22 September and 8 October, tragedy struck six children in e Eberman family. The faer cut native timber to make e six coffins. No funerals were held. 25 After several years, James and Mary sold is farm west of Indianola 26 and James journeyed back to his native Baltimore, Maryland. One story of his you is at his faer died when he was a small boy. His moer, unsure of raising her sons in a city, found a good family moving to Ohio. The boys lived ere until able to fend for emselves. 27 James and Mary s granddaughter, Mary Amos Smi heard a different story. My faer [Sherman] told us at his faer said he was descended from French Royalty. Also[,] at one time he went to see his sister in Maryland who had been adopted by wealy aristocrats and she wouldn t have anying to do wi him. He also told my faer at a wealy couple wanted to adopt him, but he told em he was older and could make his own way, and asked em to adopt his younger broer, John. So ey did and gave him e education to be a minister. 28 In 1867 James traded for land on Otter Creek sou and east of Indianola. 29 They built a red house on e Hammondsburg road where Grant, Sherman, and Alice were born. 30 George Hutt owned a farm just a short distance away and was not doing well. He was also a road supervisor and was unhappy wi at, as well. One day he made a remark in e presence of James Amos at if he could get $30 an acre for e place, he would sell out and leave e d n country. Well, James had $100 in his pocket. He handed e money to Hutt and said, Hutt, your place is sold, and George Pearson is a witness at I ve paid you $100 to bind e bargain. We will go to town tomorrow and fix up e papers. By e next day Hutt regretted his comment, but a deal was a deal to James Amos. 31 James and Mary took possession, built a large new house, and lived ere until James died. This house was located at a crossroads. Many people in 2009 still know is as e Amos Corner since members of e Amos family eventually owned e land on all four corners. Wheer James owned one of Cyrus McCormick s reapers is not known. But, he most likely purchased a similar machine as his farming operation expanded. 22. 6 James Amos sitting on e front step of his house and it appears some of his women folk are peering out of e second-story windows. James Amos was a self-made man. A Meodist, a Republican, a member of e Masonic Lodge and e Independent Order of Odd Fellows, treasurer of e county school funds, and a township assessor, Mr. Amos was a highly respected member of e community. 32 After we were married in 1850, Mary continued, Amos had 95 cents in his pocket. That was all he had in e world; but God was good to us and seemed to help us get ings togeer. When he came from Ohio to Illinois as a young man, he had saved a hundred dollars, which he had in his pocket. While he was asleep on a steamboat somebody picked his pocket and he arrived in Illinois wi almost noing. Many a day he worked ere, bo before and after we were married, for 50 cents a day, splitting rails. 33 One time a neighbor who lived a half mile away wanted to go back to Indiana to visit e home folks, so Mary walked e half mile morning and evening to milk e cows and look after everying. She churned e cream and sold e butter and wi is money bought a set of dishes English ironstone, Tea Leaf pattern, at was popular in ose days. 34 Mary also made trips back to see her folks in Illinois, 35 and her most likely means of transportation was e steam-powered train. James Monroe Amos was born on 4 July 36 when James Monroe was President of e United States; is may have started a patriot naming pattern for e Amos males. Son, James Liberty, known as Liberty was also born on 4 July. 37 Sons George Grant Amos and William Sherman Amos, known roughout eir lives as Grant and Sherman, respectively, undoubtedly were named for e famous Union generals. James Liberty died 22 May, Mr. Amos died May 8, For a time, Mary lived wi her son Sherman and her daughter Ora, bo in e Milo area. However, for e last 12 to 14 years of her life, she lived in Indianola, wi her daughter Lorena Butler Martin, History of Warren County, Iowa, Will Celebrate 100 Birday, The Indianola Tribune, September 8, Thelma Butler Pehrson s memories of her great-grandmoer, probably written in e 1990s. 7 Grandma Amos smoked a pipe! One time her great-granddaughter, Thelma Butler Pehrson, asked her why she smoked. The answer was at when she and her husband finished wi eir day s work and relaxed after supper, ey sat on e back step or back porch and each smoked a pipe and ey reviewed e day or planned e next day or year s work, and it became a habit. 41 Apparently, e evenings on e back step were time well spent. When James died after nearly 48 years of marriage, ey owned 708 acres, held nearly $10,000 in cash and notes, and owned more an $6,000 in household goods, livestock, machinery, and crops. 42 Grandma Amos lost her sight at about 76 years of age, and she suffered a fall at about age 93, after which she was confined to her bed. 43 During her life, she saw ings at were once uninkable or unheard of become luxuries and conveniences, en become so common place as to become necessities. Indoor plumbing and electricity are examples. The world of transportation moved from e railroad at tested its steam engine during her bir year to automobiles. During her later years, while bedridden, she enjoyed hours of listening to radio stations KFNF and KMA. 44 Grandma Amos 1921 KFNF, started by Henry Fields, transmitted out of Shenandoah, Iowa, and KMA was also a souwest Iowa station; bo stations had programming of interest to rural women. Thelma also remembered, Grandma s room was on e soueast corner of e second floor and was e nicest bedroom in e large house. Her room was adjacent to e baroom, ough she could not use it. I can still remember hearing Grandma Amos yell for her daughter, Ree-nee! [short for Lorena] to come tend to whatever was her need at at time. Her sons Sherman and Grant would come periodically to lift eir moer out of e bed so Lorena could change e bedding. 45 As children, Thelma and her broer always dreaded having to trudge up e stairs to visit Grandma Amos. However, Thelma said at she is sure Grandma Amos enjoyed having visitors, especially children. 46 Thelma remembers at Grandma Amos still smoked after dinner and supper and Lorena could hardly wait until her moer was finished smoking to come up to e room, open e windows wide, and air out e room! 47 Mary s surviving children apparently tried to visit eir moer for her birday or for e holidays. Ora lived in Artesian, Sou Dakota, Laura in Council Grove, Kansas, Mary in Marquis, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Alice in Omaha, Nebraska. Lorena, Grant, and Sherman all remained in e Indianola area. 48 Among e 150 or so visitors at her one hundred birday was B. F. Lucas. He was a lad, who had helped drive a herd of 1100 sheep from Pennsylvania. The journey had been twelve weeks and ree days. Upon arriving here, e owners of e sheep purchased Mr. Amos s crop, made arrangements for e sheep to remain ere for e winter, left Ben Lucas to look after em, and boarded him wi e Amos family. Ben wrote of his experience wi Grandma Amos. I presume at I am as well, or perhaps better acquainted wi Grandma Amos an any oer man in Warren county, having met her for e first time in e mon of September, At at time I was a boy of but fourteen years of age and alough my own moer was almost a 41. 8 ousand miles away, at deficiency could hardly be felt, or at least e situation was materially relieved, as long as Mrs. Amos had charge of e boy s welfare. I was e recipient of ree well-cooked meals each day for six days in e week wi someing extra for e seven. My cloes were kept clean, always mended and buttons well sewed on. All done cheerfully and wi a moerly spirit, and when I dropped e washpan in e well, ere was no display of bad temper. Moer Amos just appointed J. Garlow a committee of one to go down and get it. I have enjoyed many interesting visits wi Moer Amos since she has been confined to her bed, each of which was an inspiration, and after I had visited her on her last birday I came away impressed wi e ought at Moer Amos really is not old, but has just simply lived a hundred years. 49 Grandma Amos died February 18, 1933, at e age of 101 years, 5 mons and 6 days. Being born in 1831, e year of e eclipse and many oer significant national struggles, her long life reflected simpler concerns: family and hard work.
