5 Middle School Girls Early Childhood News One might think that with the end of Chanukah the Early Childhood Division might wind down a bit. Think again! This week was so packed with exciting learning experiences and events that it's hard to believe it all fit into one week! On Friday the Pre-K classes welcomed their parents to school to enjoy time together at the Pre-K Mommy and Me (and fathers, too!) event. A good time was had by all! Here's just a window of what happened in the EC classes this week: Younger Toddlers Winter Unit- lots of snow! Snowflake-decorating for the classroom Dancing like snowflakes Shaving cream fun Older Toddlers Shaving cream snowmen Lacing mittens Baking Snowball cookies Cutting snowflakes Nursery "Zos Chanukah" latke making- and enjoying! Letter: "Freddy F" and fun finger painting Acting out the Parsha and using Parsha sequencing cards Velvel Vav and making a vilon varod (pink curtain) Al Pi Darko Writing "Thank You" cards for Mr. John Perrigo (our "everything" man!) South America unit with big puzzle and learning names of SA countries Continuation of learning letter Zayin with applicable works Learning about respecting "zakainim" (elders) Pre-K Continuation of letter Zayin with guitar "zmiros" at Shabbos Party Making a kinor like the one Serach Bas Asher used in the parsha Field Trip to the Blue Ash Post Office Learning our address and writing letters to friends Kindergarten Girls Melacha of Dash- squeezing oranges into fresh juice Working with Achdus and learning about Asara B'Teves Letter "i:" Folding and following specific directions to make an igloo Recognizing patterns on a 100s chart Kindergarten Boys Letter "i:" Folding and following specific directions to make an igloo Recognizing patterns on a 100s chart Multi-sensory Kriah centers, including shaving cream, sand, and paint Class-wide Middos Reward System Mazal Tov to the Fifth Grade Girls for finishing Perek Zayin in Chumash this week! The girls focused on the severity of lashon hara as they learned about Moshe's staff turning into a snake. The girls also enjoyed starting the first of the makkos, makas dam. The fifth grade girls also began their "chanus"(store) unit and are enjoying learning all the different food words! The Sixth Grade Girls have been learning about Korach's family tree so that they can get a better understanding of the reasoning behind his rebellion against Moshe and Aharon. In Navi, the girls were surprised as they learned about the men of Beis Shemesh not treating the aron with proper respect as the aron makes its miraculous return to Bnei Yisrael. The sixth grade girls have also begun their preparations for their upcoming Bas Mitzvah Mother Daughter Luncheon! The Seventh Grade Girls have started the second bracha of Bilam, and the girls are waiting to see what Balak's reaction is the second time around! In Yahadus, the seventh grade girls have been really mastering many of the basic yedios, from the four special Shabbosos in the year, to the brachos of lightening, thunder and rainbows! Yasher koach to the Eighth Grade Girls for the amazing job they did on their Beis HaMikdash reports! The hours of hard work the girls put into creating their models of the different keilim is evident by the creativity and detail of each model. In addition to their models, each girl also wrote a personal and moving report on the Churban and how we feel the loss of the Beis HaMikdash nowadays; a very appropriate preparation for Asara B'Teves. On Monday, Zos Chanuka, the fifth through eighth grade girls enjoyed a delicious breakfast, beautifully planned by our Teves SPARC heads, rivka Dina Spetner and Sarah Motzen! It was a fun and delicious way to end off Chanuka! Mazal Tov to Bina Goldberg for winning this week's delicious strawberry lemon mincha cake!!! Mazal Tov to Tzivia Elias for winning our special Davening raffle for over the Chanuka break!!! Yasher koach to all the girls who participated in this program, we are so proud of you!!! We are really looking forward to our BINA raffle next week for anyone who earns 300 BINA points within the next week! So many girls are getting closer and closer to the 6500 point mark and we are so proud of them! Stay tuned for the winner of our BINA raffle!! Message from the General Studies Director From time to time, we all become preoccupied with something not going 100% perfectly in our school community. Perhaps the carpool line seems to be moving too slowly; maybe it took longer than you thought it should for your child to complete her homework one evening; maybe Rabbi Kahn scheduled a test on an inconvenient day for your son; or perhaps Mr. Polasko s newsletter article seemed boring (highly unlikely!). Whatever the case, we all get a little disgruntled and upset from time to time. I can tell you, from first hand experience, when I get grumpy or upset about something (and allow myself to dwell on it too long) I begin to find more things to get upset about. It s almost like my mind has become a magnet, attracting more and more of those same negative thoughts. I know that when I get in that state of mind it is a very unhealthy place for me, and I begin to exude that negativity on those around me. A simple cure for this messy, muddled mindset is gratitude. When I focus on everything I m grateful for with regards to the school (or some other institution, person, or situation), the negative (and sometimes unhealthy) thoughts tend to melt away. The melting away of the negative in favor of that for which I m grateful tends to attract more grateful thoughts. Yes, I can honestly say from firsthand experience, it s hard to be grumpy when you re grateful!
6 WW Create Your Jewish Legacy CHDS is currently involved in a community wide initiative called CYJL, Create Your Jewish Legacy. The end goal of this effort is to secure endowment commitments for the school to help ensure that CHDS will be here for future generations. These commitments are non-binding in nature and do not require participants to specify the type or magnitude of their gift. All that is required is that one complete a letter of intent (LOI) indicating one s resolve to remember CHDS in their estate planning. If CHDS is successful in securing another 15 of these commitments before the end of the calendar year, the school will automatically be eligible for a $15,000 grant. Please see the flyers at the end of the newsletter which provide more information on this important school project. For more information feel free to contact Rabbi Travis or any member of the CHDS Board of Trustees. Thanks very much. Mazel Tov Drs. Behrman on the upcoming marriage of their daughter Shifra.
