2 Page 2 Temple Israel CHAI-Lites AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2008 HEBREW SCHOOL NEWS Another school year has finished. It seems like the time flew. We really had a good year; and are looking forward to an even better one in September. Our trying out fun through learning was a huge success. What we did, after a subject was finished being taught instead of giving a written test we played a game "Jewporady." We put the children in teams and they had do get the answers. They had a great time while reviewing. We were able to evaluate our teaching procedures and what the children were learning. Junior Congregation was a huge success. Peter Oppenheimer does a fabulous job. We gave 6 X Chai to YAD Sarah in honor of him. It went to toys and books for sick and needy children. Kudos to all the children for always bringing in Seducah. Their change all adds up. We thank you. The calendar will be going out at the end of July. Please note the dates of our activities, and make every effort to attend. We hope you all have a great and safe summer. I can always be reached through The Temple, or by Basha17@aol.com. I will be going in for surgery and hopefully by Labor Day I will be able to join Shlomit and Revi and see you on the beach., Barbara Semel Thanks, Sy Sy Ulan, a true Temple Israel stalwart, is to be commended for his 2nd annual "Thank you, Minyanaires" breakfast, catered by Sy and Evalyn Rintel, outdoors at the Lido Towers. It was a super scrumptious meal in an idyllic setting. If you want to join us next year, start attending our daily minyan. One or two days a week would be greatly appreciated. Contact the office. Rabbi Jacob Chiger We deeply mourn the passing of our former spiritual leader, Rabbi Jacob Chiger. He and his beloved wife Eleanor were a part of the Temple Israel family for 15 years. Rabbi Chiger was a Torah scholar, a man with a great sense of compassion for his congregants and source of help and inspiration to members with personal problems. He was a good friend to many of us, and we shall profoundly miss him. In his latter years, he devoted much time with his grandchildren, whom he doted on, and in return loved him. Our heartfelt sympathy is given to Eleanor, Simmie, Tsippi, Shifra and Joseph and their grandchildren.

3 Page 3 Temple Israel CHAI-Lites AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2008 SISTERHOOD NEWS Mazel Tov to our new president Malky Asarch. Best wishes to Malky and her board for a wonderful year. Our thanks to Marci Ross, for all of her efforts as she ends her very successful term as Sisterhood President. A lovely Kiddush luncheon was sponsored by Sisterhood on Installation Shabbat. Kudos to Pam Garfinkle, who provided the program for our June meeting. Carol D'Auria, reporter for 1010 WINS Radio, was terrific. Freda Eiberson, VP of Program, was fortunate to bring the Honorable Claire Weinberg, former County Court Judge, to speak at our July meeting. She is a great speaker and her topic "Women and the Law" was very well received. The Spring Torah Fund Luncheon, chaired by Bernice Altarac and Evalyn Rintel was elegant and delicious. Malky Asarch was a well deserving Guest of Honor. Thanks to Gert Griboff for all of her help with the seating, and to the Asarch family for their generous contribution. Todah Rabah to all of our wonderful donors. Our White Elephant Sale, chaired by Robin Mahler and Grace Levie, was held on August 3rd and 4th. Thanks to all who helped make this a very successful fundraiser. A warm welcome to new Life Member, Sheryl Beck, and to our latest sisterhood member, Renee Adler. Get well wishes to Barbara Prager and Barbara Semel. Rita Berger, chair of the 52 Club, reported that our fun luncheon will be held at Cho- Sen, in Lawrence, on September 14th. There is still time to join. Call Rita at Men are invited. Mazel Tov to Grace and Ed Levie, whose granddaughter, Jenna Schneider, is going to the University of Indiana. A paid up membership dinner will be held at Maxx's Restaurant on August 20th at 7:30 pm. This will be a full course, sit-down dinner. Only paid up members and their guest are eligible to attend. Members at $18 and guests are $20. Our very successful Women's Seder, chaired by Freda Eiberson, in conjunction with Hadassah, the Sisterhoods of Temple Emanuel, Beth Shalom and JWI was wonderful. It raised over $800, which will be presented to JASA. I hope you didn't miss the Debra Griboff lectures at the Long Beach Public Library co-sponsored by Temple Israel. They were a treat. Please visit our Gift Boutique in the upper lobby. We can fill all of your gift and holiday needs. On June 11, the subject was, Mocking the Oppressors: Humor as a Weapon, addressing spoofs of Nazi Germany anti-semitism. Comedy is often the artist s most valuable weapon, but is there a line between funny and tasteless? Are some topics off-limits or is everything fair game? On June 25th, the topic was Jewish Women: Challenging Pop-Culture Stereotypes, addressing the many different portrayals of the Jewish woman in the movies and TV. I wish to take this opportunity to thank my sisterhood members, board and executive board for all their hard work.
