He gave of himself unstintingly to correct problems in our infrastructure and served as co-chairman of the High Holiday Ticket Committee. For many years, he and his beloved wife, Anita, sold supermarket certificates for our synagogue. He was a daily participant in our minyanim, and his presence is sorely missed. We send our heartfelt condolences to Anita; his sons, Harry, Siegy and Martin; their wives, Cathie, Hope and Karen; and his grandchildren, Rebecca, David, Jesse, Ian, Liza, Jared and Sam; and to his sister and brother in law, Rita & Simon Berger.
2 Page 2 CHAI-Lites FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY RABBI'S MESSAGE I would like to begin by wishing everyone a very happy new year I am happy to report that the year started off very well, with successful High Holiday services, as well as Sukkot. I was heartened to see how many children celebrated Simchat Torah with us. You may remember how very hurt I was last year when our attendance for Simchat Torah was quite dismal. This year, we had a very good response, and I think everyone enjoyed our celebration. Simchat Torah is one of the opportunities to show our children the light, fun side of Judaism. I am happy to see how many parents came to with their children on Simchat Torah, and I hope that parents will continue to lead their children by example. On Rosh Hashanah, I spoke about the phrase "va'yelchu shneyhem yachdav," (Gen 22:26) where the Torah tells us that Isaac and Abraham walked together toward the binding of Isaac. As Abraham and Isaac shared that religious experience, we must share religious experiences with our children. However, unlike Abraham, we are not asked to sacrifice our children, but to share meaningful and productive religious experiences with them. For that reason, I hope that more and more parents will make a special effort to come to synagogue with their children, be it for a holiday or for a regular Shabbat service. This is also why it is important for parents to come into the synagogue with their children and either attend Junior Congregation or go to the regular service during that time. This year, we are adding a Tot Shabbat program, to be held on most days when there is Junior Congregation. Our Hebrew School teachers, and some others, have graciously volunteered to run this program. It will start at 11 AM and will include songs, stories and games; it will introduce youngsters (ages 2 and up) to the synagogue. Of course, as is the case at every Temple Isael service, the children will be invited onto the bimah for Adon Olom and will receive chocolate from the rabbi. Please come with your children and grandchildren for this fun program, which starts on October 28 and meets again on November 11 and December 2. November is also the month of National Jewish Outreach Program's "Read Hebrew America." For five Wednesdays, beginning November 1, we will have the Hebrew Reading Crash Course at 7:30 PM. If you miss one, please call me and I can catch you up. This class is ideal for beginning readers or those who need to "brush up." Last year, more than 15 people completed the course at. Many of them will be back this year for a refresher, and I hope to see many new students as well. Please join us. I am happy to report that the Hebrew High School is up and running. We have about ten students from 8th grade and up for our weekly class (Wednesday, 6-7:15 PM) and would be happy to welcome more students to the program. Classes are both informal and informative. Pizza is included, and there is no charge. I hope that this year will be one of religious growth and learning for all of us. I hope that you will join me in that endeavor.
