1 Carnegie Shul Chatter September 7, 2016 Candle lighting time is 5:07 Shabbos services are at 9:20 The Holidays are Coming! Its just a few short weeks until the holidays arrive, so the next few Chatters will be abridged versions as I work on the holiday edition of the Shofar. Candle lighting time is 7:19 pm Sabbath services start at 9:20 am This Chatter includes information about several upcoming events in the local Jewish community, including our own Klezmer Magic on September 11, the Tribute to Anne Frank at the Carnegie Library in Carnegie on September 25, Love and Knaidels, Kosher Cooking for a Cause at Chabad of the South Hills on September 26, and South Hills Jewish Pittsburgh and Classrooms Without Borders An Evening with Uwe & Gabi von Seltmann at South Hills JCC on October 19. 2 We Remember: A Tribute to the Inner Life of Anne Frank We Remember: A Tribute to the Inner Life of Anne Frank Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. This memorable concert pairs contralto Daphne Alderson and pianist Norma Meyer in their moving musical tribute to the young girl whose indomitable spirit survived and soared beyond her death in a Nazi concentration camp in Deeply informed by Anne Frank s remarkable and beloved Diary, as well as the eternal reverberations of the Holocaust, this carefully cultivated performance incorporates compositions by Gustav Mahler, Leo Smit, Michael Cohen, Harry Burleigh, and Pittsburgh composer Douglas Levine s musical setting of Maya Angelou s poem Alone. A dessert reception with the performers follows the concert. Complimentary shuttle service will be available from the Carnegie Municipal Lot on Main Street (between Mary and Pine Streets). Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $5 for students.

3 Monday, September 26, 6:00 pm Chabad of South Hills, 1701 McFarland Rd What is "Love & Knaidels - Kosher Cooking for a Cause"? Throughout the duration of the year, there will be four Pre-Holiday cooking gatherings for women, at which a group of ladies will gather at the Chabad Kitchen to cook a meal to be donated to a special cause. Two ladies will head each gathering by planning the menu, bringing a group of friends to cook, and suggesting a cause to donate the meal to. An Evening with Uwe & Gabi von Seltmann Uwe & Gabi von Seltmann present their fascinating story. A German journalist, Ewe von Seltmann met Polish artist Gabriela Maciejowska. The two fell in love. They soon discovered that von Seltmann s grandfather was an SS-member in Krakow and that Maciejowkska s grandfather was murdered in Auschwitz. Neither grandfather s past was spoken about by their respective families but were discovered by von Seltmann s and Maciejowska s research. The von Seltmanns discuss this unique and personal journey.
