1 Carnegie Shul Chatter September 21, 2016 Candle lighting time is 5:07 Shabbos services are at 9:20 As we prepare to celebrate the New Year, we have much to be thankful for. But many in the world are not as fortunate as we are. War continues to rage in Syria and other parts of the world, and terrorism is still a daily threat both here and abroad. Candle lighting time is 6:57 pm Sabbath services start at 9:20 am A Wondrous Time of the Year! It won t be long now, the holidays are almost here, and we will be celebrating and giving thanks to Hashem for the many blessings that he has bestowed upon us. What a wondrous time of year it is! A chance to celebrate not only Hashem s creation of the world on Rosh Hashanah, but also his gift of the Torah on Simchas Torah. With the holidays falling in October this year, they will also usher in the cooler temperatures of autumn and the incredible colors that come with fall foliage. Yes, I know, the foliage also means leaves to rake, but this year I am going to give that chore to someone else, as Ellen and I will be departing shortly after Yom Kippur to take a leisurely trip south through the Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Great Smokey Mountains as we make our way to our winter home in Florida. How truly blessed we are to be able to make this journey at this time of year when we will be able to witness the spectacular beauty of this world that Hashem has created for us. Let us remember in our prayers those who have not been as fortunate as us, and let us offer tzedukah as well as our prayers to help ease some of their burdens in the year to come. In our great country, we are fortunate to be able to vote to select our own leaders, but the process of selecting those leaders has become more rancorous and divisive than ever. Let us also strive to be more accepting of the beliefs of those whose opinions might differ from ours as election day nears.

2 We Remember: A Tribute to the Inner Life of Anne Frank We Remember: A Tribute to the Inner Life of Anne Frank Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. This memorable concert pairs contralto Daphne Alderson and pianist Norma Meyer in their moving musical tribute to the young girl whose indomitable spirit survived and soared beyond her death in a Nazi concentration camp in Deeply informed by Anne Frank s remarkable and beloved Diary, as well as the eternal reverberations of the Holocaust, this carefully cultivated performance incorporates compositions by Gustav Mahler, Leo Smit, Michael Cohen, Harry Burleigh, and Pittsburgh composer Douglas Levine s musical setting of Maya Angelou s poem Alone. A dessert reception with the performers follows the concert. Complimentary shuttle service will be available from the Carnegie Municipal Lot on Main Street (between Mary and Pine Streets). Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $5 for students.

3 Monday, September 26, 6:00 pm Chabad of South Hills, 1701 McFarland Rd What is "Love & Knaidels - Kosher Cooking for a Cause"? Throughout the duration of the year, there will be four Pre-Holiday cooking gatherings for women, at which a group of ladies will gather at the Chabad Kitchen to cook a meal to be donated to a special cause. Two ladies will head each gathering by planning the menu, bringing a group of friends to cook, and suggesting a cause to donate the meal to. An Evening with Uwe & Gabi von Seltmann Uwe & Gabi von Seltmann present their fascinating story. A German journalist, Ewe von Seltmann met Polish artist Gabriela Maciejowska. The two fell in love. They soon discovered that von Seltmann s grandfather was an SS-member in Krakow and that Maciejowkska s grandfather was murdered in Auschwitz. Neither grandfather s past was spoken about by their respective families but were discovered by von Seltmann s and Maciejowska s research. The von Seltmanns discuss this unique and personal journey.
