GRADES 1B-8B NO SHACHARIS IN SCHOOL פ ש ו מ ר ח י ת ם MESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHEL Dear Parents, This week s parsha discusses the בגדי כהונה of Aharon and his children. We find an interesting concept in the אפוד & חשן of Aharon HaKohen. Both have the names of the shevatim carved out in them. Two אבני שהם were placed on the כתפות האפד and had six shevatim engraved in each of them, as the pasuk states ששה משמתם על האבן ) י, (כ ח... האחת. The names of the shevatim were also engraved on the twelve stones of the חשן, with a single name engraved on each stone, שתים עשרה על שמתם. The Torah then says: ולא יזח החשן מעל האפד ) כ ח, )כ ח, the & אפוד the חשן should not be separated from each other, rather they must be connected at all times. The sefer ( פאר נחום Divrei Torah from the Novominsker Rebbe, זצ ל, written by his son Rav Yaakov Perlow, שליט א, the current Rebbe) explains that there is a significant lesson we can learn here. The אבני שהם with the six shevatim on each represents the צבור of the Jewish people and the single names written on the חשן represent the יחידים of k lal Yisroel. It is important that those individuals in k lal Yisroel who are עוסק in צרכי צבור always remember that they also represent themselves and their families and both responsibilities are equally important. Responsibility to the צבור should not take away from one s responsibility to his or her own family. They have to be strongly connected and tied to each other לכבוד ולתפארת. On March 11, YBH will be celebrating 70 years at our annual dinner. YBH has served the community with כבוד and תפארת - honor and splendor. All three honorees, Rabbi & Mrs. Mandel, Mr. & Mrs. Karpel and Morah Shoshanah Meyersdorf, represent dedication to the צבור in a most magnificent and dignified way. Their הצנע לכת in their עבודה for the צבור goes hand in hand with dedication to their own families as יחידים, with great distinction. They each serve the צבור and focus on their personal family על צד היותר טוב. We look forward to supporting them in our way by being a part of their team in attendance at the dinner contributing to a yeshiva whose mission is to bring כבוד and תפארת to הקב ה. 3 LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE-GIRLS Dear Parents, עמו'ש משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה With the advent of Chodesh Adar, the simcha at YBH was tangible! There was no greater way to welcome the month of Adar than with the שמחה of our first graders receiving their chumashim. The celebration was meaningful as the girls portrayed through song how privileged we are that Hashem gave us the Torah. The beaming faces of the first grade girls reflected a sense of pride and simcha in their studies. A special yasher koach to our experienced morahs for imbuing a sense of excitement in the girls and may Hashem help keep this simcha burning for years to come! I had the opportunity to visit the classrooms and I could sense the simcha of the girls in their learning permeating the air. Morah Weinberger s (5G) display of a FEDEX logo containing a hidden arrow developed the theme of the hidden hand of Hashem in the Purim story, which had the girls enthralled and engaged in the lesson. Morah Rabinowitz s second grade girls did not want morah to tell them the answer to a difficult question in Chumash, as they wanted to continue looking for the answer on their own. The active participation of the girls playing the role of morah and asking the review questions truly displayed their simcha and connection to their lessons. Rosh Chodesh Adar brought an additional dose of simcha as the Morahs performed in a YB(H)C choir. What a talented group of morahs! A special thank you to Morah Davis for the creative idea and arranging the performance. The eighth graders dressed up as their morahs and distributed twisty marshmallows to symbolize the twisted events of the Purim story. It was an exciting activity to end a fun day for all. 4 A Peek Into Our Week Morah Millman s Kitah Vav: In Chumash we are learning about the special anointing spices that were used to anoint the kohen and the keilim in the mishkan. We brought in different spice mixtures and ground pepper to see a bit of the spice blending process. In halacha we were privileged to have a guest speaker. Rabbi Steinberg of the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation, came to speak to our class about the power of words. We played a game about finding our good qualities and realizing the most important qualities we can look for in others. We also had the zechus to make some class phone calls to several holocaust survivors. The girls asked them questions, which were answered and they received brachos from them. Mrs. Samuels Fifth Grade Class: In 5GS math class we have been learning all about addition, subtraction and multiplication of decimals. In correlation with this math unit, the students were assigned a DOLLAR WORDS project. A dollar word is one whose total value is exactly 1.00 when each of its letters is assigned a value according to its position in the alphabet: a=.01, b=.02,..., z=.26. The example provided for the girls was NUTTY (n=.14;u=.21;t=.20;t=.20;y=.25). When adding the decimals the total value of the word is $1.00. This is a fun way for the girls to practice adding with decimals. The three girls who find the most dollar words will receive a free homework pass. The girls have been working diligently to find as many dollar words as possible! Morah Rosenberg s Kitah Daled: Rabbi Steinberg of the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation came to speak to the girls and played a game with the class. This exciting presentation reinforced our Yesodei Halashon program and helped the girls realize the importance of good middos. In Ivrit, the girls put on skits depicting the differences in climate between Alaska and Florida. This was a fun, hands on activity with visual aids, that helped us practice our Ivrit. Mrs. Trainer s Fourth Grade Class: We are excited to begin reading our class novel, Number the Stars, by Louis Lowry. The book is told through the eyes of 10 year old Annemarie as she watches times in Denmark change dramatically. The Germans take over and her best friend Ellen Rosen moves in with her to conceal her Jewish identity. The book focuses on friendship, bravery, and human decency even in terrible times. As an introduction to the book, the students were asked to create a friendship web to articulate what makes friendship important to them. In order to put things in perspective, we looked at a brief overview on the history of Denmark, where the story takes place. The students were then asked to compile a list of questions they had on the Holocaust. We answered many questions and looked at it from a historical point of view. We then had the privilege of Rabbi Leiner speaking to us about various aspects of the Holocaust. The girls were astonished by the stories he told of his mother, who was a Holocaust survivor. It was a meaningful experience for both students and teachers alike. We look forward to continuing to read Number the Stars and working together as a class to gain meaning on these topics. ECD HIGHLIGHTS 7G students using the Van De Graff generator given to us by CIJE for the new science electronics curriculum. Mrs. Platt s innovative upcycling art program using found objects yielded imaginative items created by the girls. Don t be in a rush, take time to brush! In kindergarten, we ve been discussing the importance of taking care of our teeth. An experiment with cola and eggshells showed us how much damage can be caused by consuming foods that are not good for us. We spoke about proper brushing of teeth, flossing and going to the dentist for regular check ups. A fascinating talk about dental health by Dr. Solaimanzadeh, a.k.a. Lily s abba, helped reinforce these lessons. We will keep our smiles shining bright!
