2 Parnes Hayom Learning was dedicated on the following days: Wednesday, 5 Cheshvan (10/29) In commemoration of the yahrtzeit of Shmuel Simcha ben Alter Getzel Roseman great grandfather of Atara (2014) Shira (7G) Shmuel (5B) Dani (4B) & Elana (K-K) Levin sponsored by the Roseman & Levin families Friday, 7 Cheshvan (10/31) L'zeicher nishmas Refael Chaim ben Elisha Dov brother of Racheli (6G) Shimmy (4B) & Kivi (K-K) Hack Sponsored by the Hack family The middle school Social Studies classes have been off to a great start. All classes began the year working on units that address building social studies skills such as history, geography, civics and culture. Our sixth grade girls had the privilege of a visit from Mr. George Kramer, a dear friend of YBH, visit us last week with a special presentation on the Civil War. Mr. Kramer s visit made history come alive as the girls were privy to a vast amount of artifacts that Mr. Kramer has collected over the years. He utilized each artifact as a lens to explain important events in the Civil War. The valuable documents and artifacts were passed around the classroom and Mr. Kramer generously gave away some of the prized items in his collection. It was a unique and exciting learning experience. The seventh graders have been hard at work assessing living standards, forms of government and family structures in our Material World project. The project offers a view into what life is like as a middle class family in twelve countries around the world. The eighth grade class is embarking on our second year of YBH s Holocaust Studies Program. The class offers insight into the major events of the Holocaust with a focus on Jewish perseverance. The girls have demonstrated great maturity and commitment in seeking to use the knowledge gained in class to help enhance their Jewish identity. We look forward to providing additional enhanced and varied history classes that enable students to relate to events of the past. Mr. Ian Nagel, Middle School Social Studies Teacher GENERAL STUDIES UPDATE Meet our new faculty members: Mrs. Lesli Ginsberg, our new first grade girls General Studies teacher, grew up in Anaheim, California and received her Bachelors degree in Education while getting classroom experience. She taught Preschool for three years and was a permanent substitute at Yeshiva Ohr Eliyahu in LA. She later moved to Brooklyn where she co-taught first grade at Prospect Park Yeshivah for three years. Mrs. Ginsberg moved to Passaic last summer and loves teaching her first grade girls at YBH, pictured below. Mrs. Leah Malka Weiss: Mrs. Weiss joined YBH as a fourth grade girls Limudei Kodesh teacher. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan and attended Bais Yaakov of Detroit through High School and Beth Jacob of Jerusalem Seminary. She received her BA at Michigan Jewish Institute and has been teaching for thirteen years, ten of them as a fourth grade Morah at Yeshivat Ateret Torah in Brooklyn. She recently moved to Passaic and is proud to be joining the YBH family. She is looking forward to a wonderful year. 1G on their Autumn nature outing 2G-B traced each others forms and each girl drew and colored her own self portrait. Mr. Joel Javitt from CIJE assisted 7G and 8G on their mechanical lesson on levers.
3 The excitement of the Yomim Tovim may be behind us, but the spirit of learning, meeting our curricular objectives as well as the anticipation of co-curricular activities remains! At YBH we are devoted to seeing every child blossom and succeed academically and personally. I have had the opportunity over the past few weeks to meet with each morah and review the baseline assessments administered to evaluate Kriah, Chumash and Rashi skills. We gauged the alignment of skills demonstrated with our core curriculum and formulated strategies to implement effective instruction to meet the needs of each individual child and the class as a whole. This has resulted in increased differentiation of instruction, including a Kriah Club in first grade which allows for leveled groupings as well as individual assignments. In some grades, there have been groupings in Chumash and other subjects with the morahs preparing differentiated worksheets. This past week, the eighth grade G.O. members and their classmates prepared a meaningful and fun filled assembly in honor of Rosh Chodesh, utilizing their leadership skills and creative abilities. LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE-GIRLS The theme for תשע ה is and we קנה לך חבר introduced the shopping concept with the G.O. s presentation of a comical skit and cute song. Each month the girls will be shopping for a new which will help מידה inspire them to grow בין and בין אדם לחברו.אדם למקום י א To commemorate the yartzeit of Rachel חשון Imeinu, who personified מוותר of being מידה the by giving up the signs to her sister, Leah, the girls will focus on the im-.מוותר portance of being Each class will earn dollar bills as the morahs and administrators observe excellence in this.מידה The dollar bills they earn will be used to shop at our Rosh Chodesh Kislev assembly! Grades 5-8 will have the opportunity to create posters depicting a pasuk that relates to demonstrating sensitivity towards others. There will be a limit of $20.00 awarded, based on creativity, teamwork and the inspirational message conveyed. The key chain purses the girls received will be filled with dollar bills each month depicting the מידה being emphasized. The assembly culminated in ushering in our first store of the year, Sushi Metzuyan. Each girl enjoyed a sushi treat for Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. Can you figure out the connection? A special thank you to our PTA for providing the students with the exciting treats. Kol Hakavod to Henna Perlowitz, Tzippora Amster and Shayna Brenner, this year s G.O. officers for an assembly that resonated with ruach and achdus! Stay tuned for further details on upcoming programs geared towards raising the girls awareness and ruach to even greater heights! Have a wonderful Shabbos, Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern, Assistant Principal Girls Division MAZAL TOV To Rabbi David & Mrs. Bonnie Sheer (Yoni- class of 2010, Ahava-class of 2014, Dena-7G & Eli- 5B) on the engagement of their daughter Penina (class of '07) to Zack Nussbaum Yosef Dov Hernandez Burg (8B) & family on his Bar Mitzvah Mr. Nuchem & Mrs. Rikki Zoldan (1B asst.) on the birth of a granddaughter * PTA CORNER SAVE THE DATE The PTA will be holding its annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair on Sunday, December 14th. This is a great opportunity to stock up on Chanukah gifts while supporting our yeshiva. Details to follow. Our annual KidStuff coupon booklet sale is under way. Everyone should have received a booklet in their child's backpack. Please either pay $25 for the book or return it to the office. 4 A Peek Into Our Week: Morah Davis s Kitah Zayin: The seventh grade girls began learning the halochos and tefilos of Shabbos. We discussed the significance of Shabbos and how it is seen as a wedding between Hashem and the Jewish people. The girls enjoyed a creative activity of designing wedding gowns from white plastic tablecloths and tissue paper. They also gained insight into what makes Shabbos meaningful by hearing from administrators. As we move forward in our limudim of Chumash and Navi, we are using the Derash Emes (dikduk, Rashi, shoresh, Onkulus, metzudos, tochen) technique and honing our skills in Tanach, which helps us understand the pesukim in depth. ECD HIGHLIGHTS is a bracha from Hashem גשם because it helps plants and flowers grow. The children enjoyed stories they heard that reinforced this concept. Nursery and Kindergarten classes played a raindrop game and Pre1A s musical rainstorm was ever so loud! Sometimes rainbows appear in the sky after a rainstorm. P1A-A made beautiful rainbow projects to remind us of the first rainbow that Hashem sent as a promise to never bring another mabul. Thank you to the PTA for our yummy rainbow treats. Mrs. Kwestel s Fifth Grade Class: Fifth grade is an exciting grade and the girls are always engaged in learning. The girls in 5G have been creating and illustrating their own books based on Rod Clement s Just Another Ordinary Day. These innovative authors used the writing characteristics of organization and word choice to develop their very own unique stories about their typical day s events. Using the USA Studies weekly magazine, the girls completed the first unit in social studies about geography, which focused on the importance of maps. They identified the tools of a map, such as a compass rose, map scale and legend which help us find our way and calculate distances from place to place. They discovered that the map of the Earth is separated into hemispheres by imaginary lines. We located the equator, prime meridian and read a map to identify the lines of longitude and latitude of Passaic, New Jersey. Using the Reading Street Balanced Literacy Program, the girls have read many stories in a variety of genres including realistic fiction, non-fiction and tall tale. They also practiced many comprehension skills such as sequencing and summarization. The girls are learning to work in small reading groups using leveled readers, which enables them to read and practice their comprehension skills at a level that is challenging yet appropriate for their level of learning. In addition, they have reviewed the literary elements of plot and character, focusing on identifying the problem, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. We discussed how a character s behavior, emotions and actions change as the story progresses through these literary elements. Morah Rosenberg s Kitah Daled: A double mazal tov to the girls of 4GR! The girls collectively davened the entire Sefer Tehillim over Sukkos vacation and completed it together on the first day back at school. They are so proud of what they can accomplish as a group! Morah Rosenberg introduced Navi by distributing beautifully wrapped gifts, which the girls tried to guess the contents. Some of the creative guesses were an iphone, a class pet and a doll, but no one guessed it was a Sefer Yehoshua! Rabbi Leiner and Morah Stern came to speak to the class on this special occasion and we topped off the celebration with smiley cupcakes. We hope the sweet taste of Navi will always remain with us. Mrs. Ginsberg's First Grade Class: This past Monday, Mrs. Ginsberg's first grade girls went on a very exciting field trip to the park. The girls collected beautiful leaves in an array of colors. These leaves are displayed on our classroom bulletin board along with short blurbs about the fall season, including describing the changes that leaves undergo this time of year. This opportunity for experiential learning helped students to use all of their senses to understand how and why leaves change colors. In addition to observing and discussing these changes, the children also gained additional appreciation of the beauty of the world Hashem has created for us. Morah Gold s Kitah Hay: The fifth grade girls have begun illustrating Navi scrapbooks. The girls focused on the life and accomplishments of the shoftim. They chose a key phrase from the perek as a caption and drew a picture to go with it. They can now refer back to their scrapbooks to review the stories of the Navi through the pictures.
