The Halacha is that a person who forgets or for any reason is unable to count even one night of Sefiras HaOmer, is unable to continue counting on successive nights with a bracha, as the nightly counting during the seven weeks is considered one extended mitzvah. According to many opinions, the brachos of such a person which he recited until then are retroactively considered to have been in vain. The man s doctors told him that based on his poor medical condition they didn t think he had much time to live and would probably die before Shavuos, seven weeks later. He wanted to know whether he was permitted to begin reciting the nightly bracha for Sefiras HaOmer, as the laws of nature indicated that he would be prevented from successfully completing the mitzvah, thereby invalidating his brachos. Rav Zilberstein responded that when a clever child has a craving for a sweet which his mother refuses to give him, he is able to shrewdly recite the bracha of thereby essentially forcing his mother to give him a bite so that his bracha shouldn t be in vain. Similarly, Rav Zilberstein,שהכּל נהיה בּדברוֹ advised the man that by beginning to count with a bracha, he could in effect "force" Hashem to allow him to remain alive until after Shavuos in order to complete the mitzvah. It shouldn t be surprising that, contrary to the doctor s prognosis, the man passed away the week after Shavuos! These activities include riding bikes, playing sports, getting together with friends, playing in the park, reading books and doing arts and crafts projects. 3 Second Grade Boys Join Ranks with Israeli Soldier On Wednesday, May 20th, the second grade boys in RYNJ had the opportunity to interview, Tzvi Wiesel, a soldier in the Israeli army, as part of our Yom Hazikaron and Memorial Day studies. What made this extra special is that Tzvi is a graduate of RYNJ. After completing his high school studies at TABC, Tzvi studied in Eretz Yisrael for a year. He then joined the army. The boys enthusiastically welcomed Tzvi and launched into a barrage of questions. They learned many interesting facts about the Israeli army. They were surprised to find out that it takes a while to become a soldier and that soldiers participate in rigorous training. For example, you need to be able to carry very heavy equipment, and run and walk 60 miles. Soldiers also learn how to use various types of equipment and drive different vehicles. Tzvi was asked how he would describe his unit? His reply was that "we are a family. The guys in your unit become like your brothers." The boys eyes widened. The boys in second grade will now compare and contrast the facts they learned about the Israeli army to the facts they are learning about the American army. Last week 6B1 went on a mitzvah trip and visited the seniors at the Kaplan JCC on the Palisades. The students enjoyed the experience and made a real Kiddush-Hashem. The boys danced, sung, played a friendly game of hockey with the seniors, and spent time talking to the residents and making them laugh. At the conclusion of our visit, the JCC preschool came to sing songs with the students of RYNJ. After the outing to the JCC, the 6th graders went to Pizza Crave to celebrate a great job and unforgettable mitzvah. 6 In and Around the Yeshiva Mazel tov 1B3 on completing!בראשית in פרק א We are so proud and excited and are looking forward to celebrating together next week with a siyum! As a review activity we completed a fantastic group project illustrating what Hashem created on each day of creation. The boys had a blast using many different supplies and materials to decorate their number which represented a day of creation. The groups worked so beautifully together and I am so proud of the wonderful מדות that the boys demonstrated while working together. Please come visit our special project hanging outside our classroom. Stay tuned for exciting details about our grand siyum celebration which will be enjoyed together with the other first grade boys classes! Morah Rachel Kopstick Adriana Brad Schanen, author of the book Quinny and Hopper, came to RYNJ last week to speak to our third graders. After her slide presentation about her life, she told the students how she came with the ideas for her book. The students loved her. After the visit, the 3rd graders wrote adorable thank-you letters to the author.
