Rashi points out that the reason for this is that there are three distinct types of terumos that are being alluded to. Althought the theme of parshas Terumah centers on תרומת המשכן (donations made to build the mishkan), there were other times that collections were made. The two other terumos were used to count B nei Yisrael, but also used for the purchase of קרבנות הצבור ) )תרומת המזבח and the other for the purpose of making from the silver, אדנים for the קרשים. The תרומת המשכן did not have a set donation amount but rather כל איש אשר ידבנו לבו, each person could donate (gold, silver or other material) according to the amount his heart desired. The תרומת המזבח and the תרומת אדנים were a ( חוב obligation) for each person to donate a מחצית השקל, not more nor less. The מהר ל asks )in )גור ארי why is one terumah given כל איש אשר ידבנו לבו, and the other two required a specific amount of half a shekel and why not a whole? Additionally, why is it necessary to allude to the other two terumos in parshas Terumah if this was not the time that the מחצית השקל was being discussed? The מהר ל explains that all three are relevant here in parshas Terumah because all three terumos were meant to be given for the same purpose-to be forgiven for the מעשה עגל which contained three components. The B nei Yisrael served the עגל with their מחשבה, which is the נפש of a person and the עיקר and highest level characteristic of Man, by thinking that the עגל was a power שיש בו ממש. They served the עגל with their גוף by bringing קרבנות to it and בממון, by giving of their possessions towards creating the עגל. In order to be מכפר on the גוף and נפש of B nei Yisrael, a מחצית השקל was required of them. The מחצית השקל brought for קרבנות הצבור is a כפרה for the נפש ) (לכפר על נפשתיכם. The מחצית השקל, as a כפרה for the גוף was used for the אדנים, which represented the יסוד הבנין of the משכן, which is the גוף of the משכן, representing the גוף האדם. The reason a half shekel was required, as opposed to a whole, is because every person consists of two parts a גוף and a נפש, therefore, to be מכפר each part (& both parts) a מחצית was given for each. The תרומה that served as a כפרה for their ממון was the תרומת המשכן. All men are not created equal when it comes to wealth. In order to be forgiven for the ממון that was contributed for the building of the עגל, each person needed to give as much as he desired, since ממון is dispersed to us unequally. The כפרה is therefore not a fixed amount and not the same for everyone. This explains why all three terumos are alluded to in this parsha, since they all were necessary for the ;כפרה for the three aspects of the מעשה עגל. With Chodesh Adar upon us, we hope to be מרבה בשמחה as much as possible with our גוף, נפש and ממון. It is an opportunity to be מחנך our children to appreciate what the עיקר in life is. The way a ben Torah thinks, his מחשבות, the actions and activities we busy ourselves with, and of course, what we consider important to spend our money on, all define who we are and what gives us purpose and simcha. All three components are part of our עבודת ה during the month of Adar and of course on the upcoming Yom Tov of Purim הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Berel Leiner, Menahel

3 BOYS LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE Dear Parents, Thinking back to our own school experiences, the term Yedios Klaliyos may not be the first thing that comes to mind. If we do think of it, the likely picture is of an abstract trivial challenge or quick memorization contest. Well, it surely is so much more than that. So what are Yedios Klaliyos about and what is the objective of our comprehensive Yedios program? Its literal translation is general knowledge. As one goes through life as a Torah Jew, a comprehensive knowledge base is required to enhance appreciation of our actions and routines. There is much fundamental information that either doesn t have a place within the core Limudei Kodesh curriculum or is part of the curriculum but needs review beyond its place in the curriculum context. That is the role of a school wide Yedios Klaliyos program. Categorized by topic and by months of the year, our program systematically teaches and reviews facts, figures and principles vital for every Torah Jew. Each grade s content is the foundation upon which the following year s content is expanded upon. Working cumulatively, the strong command of the knowledge attained by every student who graduates our yeshiva makes us all very proud. This program, under the outstanding direction of Rabbi Elie Rothberger, is further enhanced by eye catching visual displays throughout the building, consistent review and quizzes along with the distinction of joining our burgeoning Honor Roll for those who excel. To further highlight the many facets of this subject and to add project based learning, our upcoming Torah Fair focuses on Yedios Klaliyos. Featuring a broad array of topics, our fair will reveal a glimpse of the vast array of content within our holy Torah. Please join us at our Yedios Klaliyos Fair this Sunday from 11 AM- 12:15 PM. You will surely enjoy an exciting and interactive learning experience. Be prepared to answer some questions and earn a prize as you proceed through the fair. We can t wait to see you! Have a wonderful Shabbos! Rabbi Binyomin Perlstein, Associate Menahel MAZAL TOV TO Dr. Lonnie & Mrs. Joyce Hall (girls gym teacher) on the birth of a grandson Avi Lazarus (1B-G) made a siyum on completion of sefer Tehillim Shabsi Stein (2B-H) celebrated completing mishnayos Shabbos with a doughnut siyum Preparing for the Torah Fair Boys in 6B reached a milestone in Gemara of 50 times F.O.P. s (fingers on the place) and received certificates for their effort. Wishing a refuah shelaimah to Morah Shoshanah, (Pre1A Morah) Rayza bas Esther
4 A Peek Into Our Week: A Peek Into Our Mr. Durham s Gym Classes: Our beautifully renovated gym and addition of many new physical education resources and equipment have made it possible to expand and enhance our P.E. program for all YBH students. In our boys division, students in 1st-4th grades, in addition to engaging in team and individual sports, also now participate in a multi level fitness program. Each student sets personal fitness goals for himself as he attempts to surpass his own prior fitness record. Students have been recognized for their efforts and progress. The middle school boys are working cooperatively in choosing teams and type of sports for their gym activities. Its great to see the boys camaraderie and we look forward to their continued enthusiasm as we embark on our middle school springtime fitness initiative. ECD HIGHLIGHTS The children celebrated Rosh Chodesh Adar with a brachos scavenger hunt. They played detective and after they filled up their puzzle boards with food stickers that matched the brachos, they enjoyed treats sponsored by the PTA. Ms. Benatar s Third Grade Class: 3B-R celebrated their personal narrative writings with a publishing party. The boys also researched Various ecosystems and became construction workers while building their individual ecosystems. They used paint and clay to construct their ecosystems, which they presented to the class. Rabbi Wieder s Science Lab: Both second grade classes spent two days in the middle school science lab last week exploring permeability of different animals and their skins. They soaked hard boiled eggs with and without their shells in water and food coloring to measure how far the coloring would possibly soak into the eggs as a model for mammals and reptiles. Mrs. Ebstein s Second Grade Class: In science, we are learning about animal characteristics and their life cycles. We are very excited that our tadpoles have arrived so we can observe the stages of their life cycle as they metamorphose into frogs. In language arts, we mastered nouns and verbs and are now focusing on adjectives. We reinforce our knowledge of adjectives with hands on lessons, such as taste tests in which we describe the smell and taste of foods we sampled. Who knew language arts could be so delicious! Rabbi Finkel s Kitah Hey: In Gemara, we have just finished the long and complicated topic of The boys feel very accomplished in all the new.יאוש שלא מדעת material and Gemara skills they have acquired. In Chumash, we just finished parshas Terumah, during which we worked very hard to understand and visualize all the vessels of the mishkan. Rebbe explained that when we learn about the mishkan we absorb some of its kedusha. We are very excited for our long-awaited haschalas gemara trip to Lakewood, where we will tour the famous yeshiva and meet with the esteemed Rosh Hayeshiva, Harav Malkiel Kotler. We are all looking forward to this inspirational and informative trip. Rabbi Stark s 1B-S joined Rabbi Wieder in the lab in & ששת ימי בראשית conjunction with their studies of to learn how a new moon signifies a new chodesh.
