1 ISSUE 12 Parsh as V a eira Hadlakas Neiros: 4:27 P M Shabbos ends: 5:46 P M January 8, 2016 CALENDAR SUNDAY, JANUARY 10 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOP. 10 AM START (GR. 2B-8B) NO MINYAN IN YESHIVA (GRADES 6-8) GRADES 1-5 WILL DAVEN IN YESHIVA ******* MOTZEI SHABBOS JANUARY 16 GIRLS 1-8 MELAVE MALKA ******* SUNDAY, JANUARY 24 SUNDAY, JANUARY 31 WINTER VACATION MESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHEL Dear Parents, Last week s parsha ended with Moshe Rabbeinu complaining to Hashem that ever since he went to speak to פרעה, the situation became worse for the בני ישראל. Moshe said: למה הרעתה לעם הזה למה זה שלחתני Why have you done evil to this people; why have you sent me? Hashem responded:... עתה תראה אשר אעשה לפרעה Now you will see what I shall do to פרעה... Rashi explains in the name of the medrash that the words עתה תראה implies now you will see, meaning, you will see what I will do to מצרים, but you (Moshe) will not see what I will do to the ז אומות, meaning, you will not enter ארץ ישראל. The Chofetz Chaim says that Hashem was telling Moshe that although הקב ה told Avraham at the ברית בין הבתרים that גלות מצרים would last 400 years, Hashem worked it out so that the קץ (which has a numerical value of 190) would be 190 years earlier, (as it says in the Pesach Hagaddah, ) חשב את הקץ. The 210 years of their back breaking work were equivalent to 400 years. When Moshe complained about the extra hard work that was put upon the בני ישראל, Hashem s response was that if it wasn t for the hard work, it would be a much longer גלות and Moshe wouldn't live to see the בני ישראל redeemed at the end of the גלות. In reality, the words עתה תראה meant now you will be זוכה to see the גאולה because it will be shortened by 190 years. Although Moshe complained about the extra work, Hashem was explaining to him that it was really for his benefit and for the benefit of the בני ישראל. As the פרשיות of גאולה unfold, one should think about the pain our brethren in ארץ ישראל are experiencing and daven for terrorist attacks to stop. Just as the message to Moshe was a sort of נחמה because the severity of the גלות brought the end sooner, we too daven to Hashem that all the צרות of אחנו בני ישראל in ארץ ישראל during this גלות will hopefully bring the גאולה sooner במהרה בימינו,!אמן Have wonderful Shabbos, Rabbi Berel Leiner Menahel REMINDER: THIS SUNDAY MORNING 10 AM START

TECHNOLOGY CENTER UPDATE The YBH Computer Lab continues to be the hub of technology education at YBH for all students in Pre 1A through 8 th grade. As we prepare our students to be knowledgeable and productive digital citizens, each YBH student has had the opportunity to use various digital resources to enhance academic learning, create attractive and engaging presentations that are connected to curricular goals, and learn the principles of computer science. Below are some highlights from recent activities in the lab: Our Pre 1A students have been learning the basics of computer usage, as they mouse around, navigating some fun and interactive math and language games. Elementary school students have been using the Mega Math program, aligned to our GO Math series, to solidify math skills through games that challenge and engage each learner. During the week of Dec. 7-10, YBH students joined over 189 million students worldwide in an Hour of Code. This is an annual program dedicated to teaching students from grades K-12 the importance of computer science education. Students used several programs utilizing both visual drag-n-drop logic blocks and Coffeescript to learn how to break down complex problems in a series of ordered steps to achieve a goal. This required sequencing and repeating steps and using conditional logic. Our 4 th graders went unplugged by selecting from preset commands (and no speaking!) to overcome a particular challenge. Students learned how to convert activities into instructions, practice coding with symbols and learn how to debug (fix) a program. Amongst the many benefits of our participation in the Hour of Code, our students learned the value of perseverance and collaboration with peers while working to achieve a goal. Middle Schoolers have been working on a variety of computer skills that will support and enhance their learning in major curriculum areas. These skills include using Microsoft Word and Power Point to format papers and presentations. Our 7th & 8th graders have recently concluded exciting joint Science/Technology projects, and the 8th graders continue to use a multitude of technology resources to create their yearbook. For the second year in a row, last year s yearbook received national recognition and accolades for our creativity and presentation. We are optimistic that this year s edition will also reflect our students efforts. YBH continues to provide all of our students with cutting edge technology instruction that will help them prepare to be informed and safe digital citizens. Mrs. Julie Friedman, YBH Technology Coordinator
3 MELAVE MALKA HIGHLIGHTS Dear Parents, Our recent Grandfather-FatherSon Melave Malka was an amazing Motzei Shabbos experience enjoyed by all. Highlighting the concept of והשיב לב אבות על בנים ולב בנים על אבותם, bringing the hearts of fathers and sons together, the YBH building resonated with the sound of Torah learning. Fathers and sons learned together with many of their grandfathers, B H, and it was a pleasure to behold. We thank Rabbi Elie Rothberger (3B Rebbe & Director of Programming) for his amazing work in coordinating the evening s program from start to finish, including all the details involved, that resulted in an inspiring program and an truly enjoyable evening. Rabbi Leiner elaborated on the importance of appreciating one s grandparents, the first through fourth grade boys choir performed beautifully and Yehuda Kreitman of 5B delivered a dvar Torah. Thank you to Mrs. Penina Goldman, Mrs. Racheli Abramoff, Mrs. Dvora Gelfond, Mrs. Lisa Miller, Mrs. Kerri Nossel & Mrs. Norma Mintz, whose joint efforts contributed to the evening s success. We are truly fortunate to have such talented and hard working faculty members and parents always ready to put their all into YBH. All in all it was a memorable evening that we look forward to repeating annually. 4 A Peek A Peek Week: Into Into OurOurWeek ECD HIGHLIGHTS Rabbi Rachgod s Kitah Vav: Baruch Hashem, we have been very busy in Kkitah vav. We recently went on our first Chevras Shomrim trip, for boys who reviewed Gemara each week of the past four weeks. They enjoyed playing ball in the park, a danish and hot cocoa at Bagel Munch. We also just completed Parshas Tzav and had a siyum this past Friday. Additionally, Rabbi Spivak came to our class and showed us some of the parts of an animal which were burned on the mizbeach. He also showed us the signs of a kosher animal, and what could make an animal into a treifa. It was an unbelievable presentation the boys will never forget! Rabbi Mendlowitz s Kitah Beis: In conjunction with the parshiyos that deal with the ten makkos, 2B had a special guest. Dr. Zalman Burger, Yaakov Pianko s grandfather, a well known scientist, visited our classroom and demonstrated some amazing chemical experiments, such as changing water into a red blood-like substance. It was loads of fun and we are very appreciative that he took the time to come in and teach us such an entertaining and interactive lesson. Rabbi Shonfeld s Kitah Ches: Mazel tov! We completed the first perek of Makos and are in the process of reviewing the perek in anticipation of the upcoming bechinos, a written & oral bechina to be administered by Rabbi Shachne Weinberger. The energy in the classroom during this week s chazara was palpable and a geshmak to be a part of. Mrs. Sommer's 4B Math Class: The boys of 4B concluded their geometry unit with an edible assessment. They created lines, segments, angles, triangles and quadrilaterals with Twizzlers and other candy. Who knew geometry could taste so good? The pre-school students enjoyed a visit from Dr. Zalman Burger, a noted scientist, who demonstrated many exciting tricks in relation to the parsha. He changed water into blood and amazed the children by changing fire into many different colors. Rabbi Wieder s Science Lab: The fifth grade is learning about states of matter. Mrs. Paul brought the boys into the middle school lab where they created silly putty by combining Borax, glue and water. They saw how liquids can turn into a different form of matter called a non-newtonian fluid, which has the properties of both solids and liquids combined. The seventh graders are learning about simple machines and how a pulley can make all of our jobs easier. One young man was able to pull together two of his peers just by using a device called Block and Tackle. PTA CORNER We had a super fun week of privilege auctions. Stay tuned for winners to be announced on Monday. Check your regarding second semester hot lunch registration!
