2 Parsha Pearls In (the) Beginning Bereshith (Genesis 1:1-6:8) Don t we all like to start a book at the beginning? It wouldn t make sense to start a book halfway through or at the end because then we won t get a true picture of what the story is all about. We will only get part of the picture or maybe very little and that is why Yahweh introduces His story with the words, In (the) Beginning. In Hebrew the word is Bereshith. We will learn many Hebrew words as we study Yahweh s Word through the Parshas and hopefully we will commit them to memory and use them when we speak to our friends, parents and Sabbath school teachers. Parsha is another word to know. It means portion or divide and we will have a weekly scripture portion to go through the Torah cycle. Torah is another word to know. Torah means teaching and instruction and generally refers to the first 5 books of the Bible also known as the books of Moses. Don t worry if this seems overwhelming. We ll take it week by week and rest assured you will have fun finding treasures in His Word. Yahweh starts the Scriptures with the words, In (the) Beginning because He wants to give us a complete story of His journey with man. This is because He loves us and wants to let us know what He was doing way before you or I were ever born. So let s take a journey with Yahweh and explore the Scriptures through the Parshas. As you read this lesson, you will look up the verses in the Scriptures, so we should always have our Bibles near us when doing the Parsha studies. When you read the words of the Bible, imagine that Yahweh Himself is talking to you. Yahweh is teaching you Himself! We should be excited to dig into His Word and learn some lessons from our Creator. The Scriptures talk a lot about how we should see Yahweh's Word and how it is like hidden treasure, precious jewels, better than fine silver or gold. The Scriptures also teach us that it is the esteem of man to search out His Word and the glory of Yahweh to reveal it to us. We are told that we are Yahweh s treasured possession and so let us be like the Bereans who searched the Scriptures daily. May we always be excited, honored and humbled to know Him and treasure up His Torah in our hearts, our minds and with all our might! Let s get digging. Page 1

Elohim (Father and Son) created (barah) everything - 1:1 The earth came to be formless and empty (tohu and bohu) - 1:2 Elohim starts a new day at evening - 1:5 The celestial creation (sun, moon) helps us to remember Yahweh s appointed times - 1:14 Man (Adam) was created in Elohim s image - 1:26 Man was told to subdue and rule over fish, birds, livestock, creeping creatures, and over all the earth - 1:28 Elohim gave us seed yielding plants and trees to be food - 1:29 Page 2

If they have not, review the verse below. Begin to help them to memorize the verse. The Katan B memory verse is Genesis 2:1-3. 9 Precious possessions You will find a craft (recommended for Katan A) and a notebook page (recommended for Katan B), based on your family/group you may choose which works best for you. You do not need to do both the craft and notebook page. We wanted to provide options to choose from. Craft for Katan A: Materials list: coloring pencils or crayons paper plates or cardstock (if you choose to cut circle pattern) brad Wheel Cover template (on next page) Wheel Base template (black/white or color on following pages) Parent/Teacher preparation: Gather materials above Print template for the wheel cover Choose if you will have the child(ren) color the base of the wheel or if you want the base that is already in color Print your desired wheel base Instructions for the craft: If you chose the black and white version of the wheel base, have the child(ren) color the base with the seven days of creation. Cut out the base along the circle and glue it to a paper plate. Color and cut out the wheel cover around the circle. Be sure to cut out the pie portion so that each day of creation will show individually around the wheel. Using the brad, pierce the center of the wheel cover and the center of the wheel base and attach them together. The cover will rotate over the base showing each day of creation. Page 8

13 Precious possessions Notebook page for Katan B: Materials: Cardstock of light color (Due to the size of items being placed on page, please do not use regular paper or construction paper for pages) Coloring pencils or crayons Markers Construction paper in various colors - must have: black, yellow, blue, green, Paper fasteners or brads Cotton balls, white batting, felt or fleece Fun foam in various colors Cellophane, zip lock bags, or other clear plastic Gold and silver: large sequins, or other round small circles, can also use foil. Optional foil stars Sandpaper, moss, or other material to represent land Tissue paper - different colors String or twine White glue, hot glue and glue sticks (various glues are needed due to the materials used) Parent/Teacher preparation: Before your child(ren) start(s) working on his or her page, take the card stock and make 8 divisions. You can either fold the paper in half lengthwise and then in half twice more downward or widthwise. You can also just draw or mark the half way point down the middle of the paper lengthwise and then mark it 2¾ (7cm) sections. Now you will have 8 equal sections to work with, 1 for their Hebrew word and 7 for the days of creation. Sections will run from left to right. *We suggest marking the page so that the final product is flat and easy to store. Section one : Out of desired color of construction paper or cardstock cut a 4 (10 cm) by 2½ (6¼ cm) rectangle. Your child(ren) will write (1) Bereshith, (2) Hebrew, and (3) the definition In the Beginning. Have your child(ren) glue the rectangle at the upper left corner of their page. Page 12

14 Precious possessions Notebook page for Katan B page 2: Section Two: Put black and yellow construction paper together and cut out two misshapen circles. Be sure to cut them at the same time so that they fit exactly on top of each other, with the black being on top. On the yellow shape, have your child write an Aleph on the center. Poke a hole at the top center of the shapes to insert a paper fastener, but do not put the fastener through yet. Poke a hole at the top of center of the second section (right top corner) of the page. Insert the fastener with shapes attached and open at the back. Your child now has the first day finished and is able to separate dark and light. Day and Night. Section Three: Out of clear cellophane or plastic cut two half circles about 4 (10 cm) by 1 (2½ cm) to 1½ (3¾ cm). Cut two small cloud shapes out of white material of choice. Cut blue waves from construction paper, fun foam or card stock. (Optional make waves with puffy paint.) Have child glue clouds on upper part of section 3 and the waves on the bottom of section 3. Have child write the letter Bet between the clouds and the waves. Glue semi circles of clear plastic over clouds and waves with arcs facing each other. Day two is ready. Section Four: Cut a 4 (10 cm) by 2½ (6¼ cm) rectangle our of blue fun foam, construction paper or cardstock. Cut a 3 (7½ cm) by 1½ (3¾ cm) semi circle for land out of sandpaper, or construction paper. Cut a 3 (7½ cm) by ½ (1¼ cm) strip of green tissue paper or construction paper and fringe it for grass. Cut a small brown trunk shape for a tree. Have child(ren) first glue land on section 4. Glue tree trunk, grass. With a small piece of green tissue paper crumple it and glue to the top of tree trunk. Glue different color pieces of tissue paper for flowers on land. On trunk have child(ren) write the letter Gimel. If using paper to represent water, fold a small section on short end of blue rectangle and glue to left side of section 4. If using fun foam, you may need to score the short end so it will bend and hot glue to left side of section 4. Day three is done. Child(ren) can pull back water from land. Page 13

15 Precious possessions Notebook page for Katan B page 3: Section Five: Out of blue construction paper, fun foam or cardstock cut a 2 (5 cm) diameter circle. Out of green construction paper, cardstock or fun foam cut a land mass to fit circle. Have child(ren) glue green mass on circle for earth. Poke a hole in center of earth and place paper fastener in hole (do not open the fastener yet). Write the letter Dalet on the center of earth around paper fastener. Poke a hole in center of section 5 and push paper fastener with earth attached through hole. Open paper fastener in the back. Take the gold circle sequin or item of choice being used to represent the sun and glue it on left upper side of section 5. Glue the silver sequin (you may cut sequin in a half circle) or item being used to represent moon on opposite side of earth from sun. You may also have them glue some foil stars as well. Day four is done. Your child(ren) can spin the earth. Section Six: Cut sea creatures out of foam, construction paper, card stock using the template provided or you can create your own. You can also print them from the web or use stickers. Do the same for flying creatures no bigger than 1 (2½ cm). Cut a cellophane or plastic rectangle piece 4 (10 cm) by 1 (2½ cm). Cut a small quarter circle (about 1 (2½ cm) long) out of brown paper. Cut one length of string or twine 4 (10 cm), then cut 2 or 3 lengths of string 2 (5 cm) long. Glue the sea creatures to the bottom half of section 6. Glue cellophane over sea creatures. Glue small brown quarter circle on the right side just above cellophane to make an island Have child(ren) write the letter Hey above the island in green or brown. Take the small string lengths and hot glue them to the back of the flying creatures creating a loop. Slide the loops onto the 4 (10 cm) string and then hot glue each end of the string at the top of section 6. The birds should be able to slide across string as if they are flying. Day five is done. Section Seven. Make a land mass about 4 (10 cm) long out of sandpaper, moss, fun foam or paper. Cut Adam and Hawwah from black construction paper using the template provided. Use different textured materials to create animals, for example use cotton balls or other white material to make 2 sheep. Whatever animals you choose to make, just make sure there are two of each. Glue the land mass to the bottom of section seven, create your Garden with the animals and Adam and Hawwah. Have child(ren) write the letter Vav next to Adam and Hawwah as a covering. Day six is done. Section Eight. Print and color picture of Adam and Hawwah worshipping. Cut it out to fit Section eight. Have child(ren) glue it to the last section and explain we are not doing any work on that section because it is the 7 th day and we rest :). Page 14

Certainly the jello required preparation ahead of time. You can use a cupcake tin for presentation or just use cupcake liners on a plate which will also allow for making additional plates for the number of children you are teaching.
