2 From the President What a difference a year makes! This time last year we were just welcoming our new Rabbi. The demolition on the kitchen hadn t yet begun. And we had a leaky roof. Our Rabbi, Rabbi Andrews, Hannah and their children have now been with us for a full year and have truly completed our Lake Park Synagogue Family. The kitchen, despite the challenges is now fully functional and a pleasure to work in. The roof has been replaced and we are working on the basement playroom. Thank you again to Drs. Isabel and Alfred Bader for making that possible. Looking ahead, we have a lot on the calendar and a lot on our goal list. First up is the East Side Eruv. We thank Lizzie and Phillip Katz for their hard work on making this long process a reality. We re looking forward to our events with AIPAC and developing our other partnerships. There is always room for leaders and workers to help our congregation continue to grow and to thrive. Speak to me or the Rabbi on the ways you can get involved. Ronna, Joel, David, Jordan and I wish you and your families a very healthy, happy peaceful new year. Looking ahead, we have a lot on the calendar and a lot on our goal list. President Larry Pachefsky Need help building your Sukkah? Do you need help building or designing your sukkah? Rabbi Andrews is happy to help you through the process! If you need the Rabbi s assistance, feel free to contact him directly to make arrangements! As in years past, Lake Park Synagogue has invited students from New York s Yeshiva University and Stern College to join us for Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Torah Tours allows spirited young men and women to share their learning, spirit, and enthusiasm with congregations all over the country. Thank you to our host families, the Pachefskys and Lorraine Hoffmann. This is a great opportunity for us to gain from them, but also for us to show them Milwaukee hospitality and Lake Park Synagogue warmth.. The photo below shows last year s Torah Tours participants in the LPS Sukkah. 2
3 Rosh Hashanah Poem by Joan Miller Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them. -George Eliot From the Rabbi When Reuvain comes to save Yossef from the pit his brothers threw him in, the verse describes his actions as returning to the hole. The Rabbis of the Midrash ask Where was he returning from? Their answer was that Reuvain was returning from his fasting and wearing of sackcloth, his acts of repentance for a previous show of disrespect to his father. The Rabbis go on; God at that moment declared you, Reuvain, are the first to repent, so too will your descendents be the educators of the Jewish people on proper teshuva. Dead and not gone for still we remember: In quiet words, funny phrases, a wave of the hand, a tender touch; In shaded snapshots that linger In musty albums and dusty corners; In songs sung slightly off-key through the trees of our woods; In the hours slinding over blackice to arrive on the other side; In the Shofar s sounding at the turning of the New Year We remember The question here is obvious: Reuvain was not the first person in history to do teshuva. Adam, the first man, and his son Kayin likewise are recorded as repenting for their misdeeds. Why is Reuvain singled out and lauded as the first penitent? The answer the commentators give is that Reuvain's repentance was markedly different from Adam's and Kayin s. While Reuvain had both merits and faults, Adam and Kayin had only faults. This is what distinguishes Reuvain from all those who came before. He did not rely on his positives and sought to correct his errors. The High-Holiday season is, traditionally, a time for introspection and re-examination of our daily conduct. In our increasingly modern secular world concepts such as sin, forgiveness, repentance and merit are increasingly foreign. This disconnect is further exasperated by the fact that, like Reuvain, we are not wholly good or bad. On the whole, we are basically good people. Then how can we relate to the overall theme of teshuva? I'll answer this with a story. One time Saadia Gaon, the most prominent rabbi of the 9 th century, was visiting a small town. When he arrived, he went straight to the local inn. While the innkeeper was not rude, he afforded R' Saadia no special honours. The next day when the entire city leadership came to meet R' Saadia with great honour and fanfare the innkeeper grew increasingly distraught. He approached R' Saddia and begged his forgiveness. R' Saadia was unsure so he asked for what? You were neither rude nor disrespectful. Yes replied the innkeeper, but I did not know who you were. If I had I would have treated you much differently. Welcome to new residents of the East Side who visited our synagogue recently! For membership information, call So too with God. Maybe it is hard to grasp sin and punishment, but we can all recognise that through much of the year we do not show much cognisance of Hashem. The High Holidays are a time when we can centre ourselves and take stock of all the wonderful things we have experienced the preceding year. 3
4 New LPS Calendars Coming Soon! The New Year is approaching, and with that in mind, its time to prepare for next year at Lake Park Synagogue! We will soon be releasing the 5776 calendar, available for pickup at the shul during Rosh Hashanah. In addition to the Candle Lighting & Havdalah times, the calendar will include a directory, and a look at the following year s calendar dates. If you wish to purchase an ad to have in the new calendar, please contact Shirley in the LPS office for more information. Please do so as soon as possible, as our deadline is rapidly approaching. Thank you! 4
