Student Workbook for Charity
Throughout the Ages What does Maaser Kesafim mean? Fill in the blanks: The Talmud tells us asser b shvil shetis asher. This means you should... a... in order to become... Regarding ma aser what advice did the Chofetz Chaim give? 4 Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz, the brother of the Shelah Hakadosh writes that he has seen with his own... that if a person is careful to give... correctly, he will become wealthy,... wealthy, and be able to... that wealth on to his... Charity Descendants Remain Pass Eyes 5 What did Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz warn would happen if one is not careful to give ma aser correctly? 6 Rav Yaakov Baal Haturim, author of the Tur writes that a person who is careful in giving ma aser will have both his... and... increased.
7 In what merit did our forefathers Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov receive their incredible wealth? 8 Where in Birchas Hamazon do we mention the blessing of the wealth of the Avos? Living Up to the Test Fill in the box below: What did the mice tell Rabbi Pinchas Ben Yair they were doing to the townspeople s crops? What lesson from this story can be used to deflect the Yetzer Hara when one is struggling to part with his money? When the Mishnah states ma aser is a fence around wealth it is telling us that giving... is the most... way for a person to make sure his... is safe. A person thinks that he is... out by giving ma aser. Our rabbis tell us the... is true. By giving... to tzedakah you are actually protecting your... secure opposite losing wealth %0 ma aser money
4 What does this word and its trop teach us? 5 According to the Ramban (Nachmanides), if one gives charity with a heavy heart: It makes no difference as long as he gives the money. He transgresses a Torah commandment. He may ask for the money to be returned.. 6 To apply the strategy of Think 0% less, how should one view a profit of $00? 7 Why is it helpful to keep a separate ma aser bank account? Practical Application of the Laws Giving ma aser kesafim is: A Torah obligation A rabbinic obligation A minhag/ ancient custom. 4
What are two reasons that it is important to state that one is giving ma aser, bli neder- without a vow? Put in order the steps to begin the mitzvah of taking ma aser. He should set a yearly date by which he will close his books. Many people choose Rosh Hashanah, but one may choose any time that works for him. He should record all charity given, both large and small donations and all sources of income as well. He should also state that he will be following the lenient opinion which allows a person to carry donations from one year to the next. At the end of the appointed time he should balance the two figures and calculate how much ma aser needs to be given and distribute ma aser owed without delay. He should state that he is giving ma aser bli neder. Understanding Mixtures: Large and Small 4 What should a person, who is following the lenient opinion which allows a him to carry donations from one year to the next do, if he finds that he gave more than 0%? Nothing, he is can t carry donations from one year to the next. He can start the next year s balance sheet with a credit in the ma aser column. He can only start the next year s balance sheet with a credit in the ma aser column if he had an emergency situation that didn t allow him to distribute all of his ma aser. 5
Quiz Show How much ma aser needs to be given? If the answer is $0 please explain why. Avi looks at his stock portfolio and sees that it s has gone up $000. Tamar sells a portion of her stocks and makes a profit of $800. Chaim receives $500 for his Bar Mitzvah. 4 Sarah receives a gold bracelet worth $00 as a Bas Mitzvah present. 5 Miriam s grandmother wants to buy her a piece of jewelry for her birthday. She isn t sure of Miriam s taste, so she gives her $00 and tells Miriam to buy a piece of jewelry for herself. 6
6 Mrs. Levy receives a $600 salary each week. She pays a babysitter $00 a week so that she can go to work. 7 The Kramer family owns an apartment which generates $900 a month rental income. 8 Yosef got a guitar from his grandfather. He decides to sell it and gets $400 for it. 9 Esther s great grandmother passed away. In her will she instructs that 0% of all her assets be given to charity. Her assets are then divided among relatives. Esther recieves $5,000. Giving a Fifth Match. Give 0% Give 0% (/5) Give as much as the poor needs Give less than 0% Those who are financially able Average Stingy Ideal level How should one decide which of the above levels of ma aser he should choose to give? 7
The Ma aser Challenge What is the only mitzvah with which we are allowed to test Hashem? What two things must a person be careful of, if he wants the blessing of asser b shvil shetis asher, meaning give a tenth so that you will become wealthy? 8
