This program will end in time to return to the sanctuary for Yizkor. Chanting is the musical and rhythmical repetition of a sacred phrase from a holy text, either liturgy or scripture. It is a spiritual practice that fully engages the body, heart and mind. It is also a meditative exercise that builds energy and expands consciousness. The key component is the silence following each chant, when each group member harvests his or her own intention and meaning. Celebrating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah in 5779? Come to a meeting for parents of children turning 13 between September 2018 and August Monday, January 23, 2017 at 7:30 pm in the shul library Please RSVP to Rabbi Clark at For Yom Kippur, I will lead the group in a chanting session whose theme will be Teshuvah. One example of a chant would be Hodi eiani Yah kitzi, umidat yamai mah hi? O God, show me my end and what is the measure of my days? (Psalm 39:5) With this chant we can pray for a vision for who we are becoming. At the end of the chant, open up to receive a vision from your future self. Let your imagination lead you to your vision and trust what comes. Receive the wisdom, guidance or blessing from your future self. Prepare to be enchanted by this meaningful spiritual practice. Robyn Israel bio is a graduate of Torah Trek, a Jewish wilderness spirituality program. She studied chanting with Rabbi Mike Comins and Rabbi Shefa Gold. Robyn is a local playwright and psychotherapist.

Our speaker s work as the first ever Storyteller-in-Residence at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care has reaffirmed the importance of story in understanding and valuing the lives of the many elders he encounters. A Jewish proverb asks, Why did God invent human beings? It answers, Because God loves stories. This talk reflects on the ways storytelling has become integrated into the life of Baycrest, and how the many stories our speaker has heard and shared with patients, residents, family members, and staff have helped to create a frame of meaning for the journey into old age. His talk combines personal experience interspersed with humour. Dan Yashinsky is a professional storyteller and the author of Swimming with Chaucer: A Storyteller s Logbook, and Suddenly They Heard Footsteps: Storytelling for the Twenty-First Century. In l999, he received the first Jane Jacobs Prize for his storytelling work in the community. This presentation is sponsored by Louise and Albert Levy.
