3 MESSAGES FROM THE PRESIDENT, SANFORD VIEDER OUR HISTORY, OUR FUTURE Our great congregation originally came togeter in During tat time, it was quite common for congregations tat were forming to pattern temselves after specific national backgrounds, suc as Polis, Russian or Hungarian congregations. Adat Salom really came togeter as a result of a geograpical need at te time and was originally called te Nortwest Hebrew Congregation and Center. It became a place of worsip were anybody was welcome regardless of teir cultural eritage. Te congregation grew quickly and ultimately canged te name to Adas Salom wit te completion of te beautiful new building tat was constructed on Curtis and dedicated on Marc 30, As more European Jews filtered into te city of Detroit following World War II, te opportunity to belong to a Jewis congregation witout imminent fear and te ability to safely observe teir customs and rituals in a synagogue setting took on new meaning. Sadly, so many of tese new Detroit Jews ad witnessed and suffered te untinkable. Many ad lost teir entire families. One of tose people was my fater, of blessed memory, Cantor Larry Vieder, wo joined te clergy of Adat Salom in For my fater, like so many oter survivors, te synagogue became a very important symbol. It was a beacon of ligt tat proved to te world tat Jews mattered. It afforded im an opportunity to rebuild a new life, wit a new family. Like so many oter survivors, it was tat grit and determination to not only rebuild a meaningful life and a prosperous synagogue, but also to assure for generations to come tat te synagogue as a symbol Continued on page 16 FROM HAZZAN DANIEL GROSS JOIN THE RHYTHM OF THE DRUM CIRCLE! On Tuesday, August 7, Adat Salom will be osting a drum circle (see additional information on page 4). I believe tat tis is te first time we ave offered suc a program. A drum circle is a group of people, eac wit a drum, bringing te community togeter troug rytm. Te beauty of a drum circle is te spontaneity tat ensues from all of te individual rytmic contributions to te collective beats. Te idea came about back in 2013 wen Adat Salom osted a igly successful regional Songleader Boot Camp conference. One of te sessions was a drum circle, and I ave wanted to lead a drum circle event at Adat ever since. Te catalyst for doing so was our congregant Debora Cymerint, wo contacted me a few monts ago wit a similar idea. Tanks to er entusiastic persuasion and to Hillel Day Scool for loaning us te majority of te drums, te idea is now coming to fruition. Tere is a limit to te number of participants due to limited drum availability. We ave drums available for 20 people. We can accommodate additional participants wo are able to bring teir own and drums. All participants (ages 12 and up) sould RSVP to Caren Harwood at carwood@adatsalom.org or call ext Note tat you do not need any experience watsoever wit a drum circle or wit drumming. Tere may possibly also be singing! Come join us and let te beats of our drums resonate trougout Adat Salom. I guarantee smiles on everyone s faces! FROM RABBI AARON BERGMAN A NEIGHBORHOOD FOR ALL OF US I loved Mr. Rogers. No oter man except my fater ad suc a profound impact in ow I approac te world. Fred Rogers saw te best in people, and elped tem see it, too. He was not naive. He was strong, but kind, and faitful but openminded. His voice is needed today more tan ever. Here are a few of is teacings. Many of tese quotations are collected in te postumous volume Te World According to Mister Rogers, toug tey come from various sources, including is many television appearances. Tey were collected ere by Cris Higgins. 1. On Heroes Witout Capes "Wen I was very young, most of my cildood eroes wore capes, flew troug te air, or picked up buildings wit one arm. Tey were spectacular and got a lot of attention. But as I grew, my eroes canged, so tat now I can onestly say tat anyone wo does anyting to elp a cild is a ero to me." Continued on page 16 FROM RABBI RACHEL SHERE THE MOST FREQUENTLY REPEATED COMMANDMENT If you ad to take a guess, wat would you say is te most frequently stated commandment in te entire Hebrew Bible? I ll give you some clues. It doesn t concern ow often you pray, ow muc you give to carity, wat you eat or even ow you treat your neigbor (altoug tat last one is te second most frequently stated commandment). You migt be surprised to learn tat te commandment Do not fear is stated nearly eigty times in te Tanak, making tis, by far, te most repeated of God s words. One of my favorite autors is te renowned psyciatrist, Dr. Elisabet Kübler-Ross. Having autored undreds of books and scolarly articles on deat, dying and living a life of meaning, er last publised words were: Te sole purpose of life is to grow. Te ultimate lesson is learning ow to love and be loved unconditionally...all te ardsips tat come to you in life are an opportunity to grow, wic is te sole purpose of life It is very important tat you do only wat you love to do. You may be poor, you may go ungry, you may live in a sabby place, but you will totally live. And at te end of your days, you will bless your life because you ave done wat you came ere to do... Dying is noting to fear. It can be te most wonderful experience of your life. It all depends on ow you ave lived. Te upcoming Hig Holidays give us te opportunity to look inward and reflect upon our lives. I don t believe tat any of us is ere by accident; tere is an important reason wy eac of us is in te world at tis time and in tis place. Fear, owever, can rob us of te opportunity to live te fullest expression of our lives. Tere is a quotation, often attributed to Mark Twain, wic reads, I ave lived a long life and ad many troubles, most of wic never appened. As we add Psalm 27 to our daily prayers tis mont, let us take its opening verse to eart: God is my ligt and my strengt. Of wom sall I fear? 3

16 RABBI BERGMAN (continued from page 3) 2. On Saring Responsibility "We live in a world in wic we need to sare responsibility. It's easy to say, 'It's not my cild, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Ten tere are tose wo see te need and respond. I consider tose people my eroes." 3. From a PSA Following September 11, 2001 "If you grew up wit our Neigborood, you may remember ow we sometimes talked about difficult tings. Tere were days... even beautiful days... tat weren't appy. In fact, tere were some tat were really sad. Well, we've ad a lot of days like tat in our wole world. We've seen wat some people do wen tey don't know anyting else to do wit teir anger. I'm convinced tat wen we elp our cildren find ealty ways of dealing wit teir feelings--ways tat don't urt tem or anyone else--we're elping to make our world a safer, better place. I would like to tell you wat I often told you wen you were muc younger: I like you just te way you are. And wat's more, I'm so grateful to you for elping te cildren in your life to know tat you'll do everyting you can to keep tem safe and to elp tem express teir feelings in ways tat will bring ealing in many different neigboroods." 4. On Wat We Do "Wat matters isn't ow a person's inner life finally puts togeter te alpabet and numbers of is outer life. Wat really matters is weter e uses te alpabet for te declaration of a war or te description of a sunrise--is numbers for te final count at Bucenwald or te specifics of a brand-new bridge." 5. On Looking for te Helpers "Wen I was a boy and I would see scary tings in te news, my moter would say to me, 'Look for te elpers. You will always find people wo are elping.' To tis day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my moter's words, and I am always comforted by realizing tat tere are still so many elpers--so many caring people in tis world." 6. On Helping "I ope you're proud of yourself for te times you've said 'yes,' wen all it meant was extra work for you and was seemingly elpful only to somebody else." 7. On Pain "Tere is no normal life tat is free of pain. It's te very wrestling wit our problems tat can be te impetus for our growt." 8. On Accepting Our Feelings "Tere's no 'sould' or 'sould not' wen it comes to aving feelings. Tey're part of wo we are and teir origins are beyond our control. Wen we can believe tat, we may find it easier to make constructive coices about wat to do wit tose feelings." 9. On "Disabilities" "Part of te problem wit te word disabilities is tat it immediately suggests an inability to see or ear or walk or do oter tings tat many of us take for granted. But wat of people wo can't feel? Or talk about teir feelings? Or manage teir feelings in constructive ways? Wat of people wo aren't able to form close and strong relationsips? And people wo cannot find fulfillment in teir lives, or tose wo ave lost ope, wo live in disappointment and bitterness and find in life no joy, no love? Tese, it seems to me, are te real disabilities." 10. On Facing Sadness and Anger "Confronting our feelings and giving tem appropriate expression always takes strengt, not weakness. It takes strengt to acknowledge our anger, and sometimes more strengt yet to curb te aggressive urges anger may bring and to cannel tem into nonviolent outlets. It takes strengt to face our sadness and to grieve and to let our grief and our anger flow in tears wen tey need to. It takes strengt to talk about our feelings and to reac out for elp and comfort wen we need it." SANFORD VIEDER (continued from page 3) of our resolve as Jews and te strengt of Judaism, would stand as a critical piece of society tat could not be eliminated, burned or destroyed. My fater spent is entire lifetime building, promoting and safeguarding our congregation and wat it stood for. To tis end, te new name of Adas Salom (wic means Congregation of Peace) ad very deep meaning. As we fast-forward to te present, it is easy to see tat our congregational culture and mission as genuinely been retained and upeld from its original roots. Wile muc as canged over te 75-year istory of te congregation, we ave always remained true to te original vision. Our basic cultural fabric and goals remain te same. Adat Salom continues to be an open, welcoming and inclusive congregation to many different types of people wit different cultural eritages. Wile we continue to conduct traditional daily minyan and Sabbat services in a warm, friendly environment, we also offer a wonderful variety of alternative services and programs to celebrate te Jewis olidays and Sabbat. Our roots and traditions are steadfast, yet we do so in a contemporary fasion and our amazing clergy are always striving to innovate to meet te needs of our members. Tere is truly someting to offer for every age and every generation of te families tat collectively make up tis great congregation. Despite our remarkable istory, it's important tat we keep our eye on te future to ensure tat wat was started in 1944 continues to ave te proper foundation, commitment and financial security for te next 75 years. We are at a critical juncture were we need to capture te imagination and commitment of te next generation of Jewis leaders to ensure tat a symbol of Jewis solidarity and permanency remains as a brigt beacon in our community. We must continue to move forward in our contemporary interpretations of Jewis life, wile respecting our eritage and te deep roots tat te founders of tis synagogue worked so ard to plant. It is critical tat we intrigue te next generation to elp build upon te mission, traditions, spiritual exploration, cultural growt, education and friendsip tat make Adat Salom wat it is. We must meet te needs of our next generation to ensure our future. Maggie Leff, te recipient of te 2018 Jay Yoskowitz z l Israel Scolarsip, wit Rabbi Bergman, Hazzan Gross, Rabbi Yoskowitz and Rabbi Sere. 16
