VICTORY THROUGH THE WORD Te Wat, Wy, and How of Scripture imprint memorize All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teacing, for reproof, for correction, for training in rigteousness; tat te man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 2 Timoty 3:16-17 example case study For very different reasons neiter Seri nor Ben ave read a Bible in years. As a cild, Seri loved reading te gospel accounts of Jesus life. But a Bible as Literature class in college canged all tat. Seri was socked as er professor listed numerous istorical errors in er beloved gospel stories. Ten e spent a full week detailing wat e considered laugable scientific errors trougout te Old and New Testaments. Finally, e made is students memorize a cart of seemingly irrefutable contradictions found in te Bible. Having never eard evidence to te contrary, Seri accepted er professor s views as fact and permanently retired er cildood Bible to a box in te closet. Wat advice would you give to Seri? Do you know ow to answer te claims of er professor? Ben never doubted te reliability of te Bible, e simply doubted te relevance. You see, Ben s a busy man. He runs is own company, as a family of five, and cairs te neigborood ome-owners association. He attends curc as any believer sould, but doesn t ave te time nor te inclination to read te Bible on is own. Wy not leave tat to te professionals, te pastors and seminary professors of te world? After all, te one time Ben did read from is own Bible, e got lost in some book called Leviticus tat didn t seem to ave any bearing on life in te real world. Wat advice would you give to Ben? Have you ever felt like e does? Do you still?

I n tis lesson we will learn ow to elp believers like Seri and Ben develop a lifecanging love for God s Word. Tis is absolutely essential to te growt of any believer, for God s Word is our second of tree divine means to victory in te spiritual life. Witout a regular diet of Scripture it is simply impossible to experience te joy, growt, or significance tat God desires for eac of us. Moreover, since scripture is THE revelation of Jesus Crist, it is te indispensable means by wic we grow in our relationsip wit Him (our number one priority in life as stated in Pilippians 3:7-11). So let s begin by elping tose like Seri. How do we answer te socking claims of er professor? First, we need to determine exactly wat te Bible says about itself. Wat is tis book Cristians so revere? Second, we need to know ow to defend te Bible s claims. 1 Wat Is Te Bible? Look up te following passages. Wat do you learn about te nature of scripture from eac? Isaia 40:8 2 Timoty 3: Peter 1:20-21 Mattew 5:17-18 Luke 1:1-4 Luke 24:44-47 Acts 3:18 Acts 4:24-26 According to tese passages, wo is responsible for te content contained witin te Bible? 3. Wat do tese passages teac about te reliability of scripture? Wat do tey teac about te endurance of Scripture? In contrast to te view of Seri s professor, te Bible declares tat God superintended te autors of scripture so tat, using teir own individual literary styles, tey perfectly composed and recorded God s revelation to man in te words of te original manuscripts. Tus, wen accurately interpreted, te Bible is witout error or contradiction and is our final autority in all areas of life. In B.B. Warfield s succinct words, Te Bible is te Word of God in suc a way tat wen te Bible speaks, God speaks. We believe tat tis view of scripture applies to all 66 books of te Bible, from te Law (te Tora or first 5 books) of te Old Testament to te propetic book of Revelation at te end of te New Testament. Toug written over a period of 1500 years by more tan 40 autors, from te first page to te last te Bible tells te unified story of God s creation and redemption of mankind troug Jesus Crist (see story line of te Bible in appendix). 57

2 Is Tis Reasonable To Believe? Having establised wat te Bible claims about itself, tat it is te autoritative Word of God witout error or contradiction, a skeptical reader may wonder, Is it reasonable to believe tese claims? Te sort answer is, Absolutely! Unbiased literary analysis, istorical researc, and arceology all provide strong evidence in favor of te reliability of scripture. We don t ave room to list all te evidence, but ere are tree strong arguments in favor of te reliability of scripture: Internal Evidence For a book written over many centuries by many autors in many places, te Bible demonstrates remarkable unity in teme and teology. Notice ow te enemy introduced in Genesis 3 becomes te enemy vanquised in Revelation 12:9. Also, it includes an astounding amount of istorically fulfilled propesy (Psalm 22:14-18 fulfilled in Matt 27:35; Isaia 53 fulfilled perfectly in te life of Crist; Mica 5:2 fulfilled in Matt 2:1-6). Finally, contrary to almost all oter ancient works of literature, te Bible is socking in its faitfulness to record embarrassing truts and events witout distortion, suc as disorder in te curces (1 Corintians 3:1-3) and sins of te apostles (Romans 7; Gal 2:11). Manuscript Evidence for te New Testament Wen we read te New Testament today, are we reading a book tat as been eavily distorted over te last 2000 years or a reliable witness to te original text? Ancient manuscripts clearly demonstrate tat te latter is true our text today is over 99% accurate and te minor discrepancies affect no major doctrinal issues. Evidence for all oter ancient literature pales in comparison to te overwelming body of ancient manuscript evidence for te NT, as te following cart 5 demonstrates: WORK DATE WRITTEN EARLIEST COPY FRAGMENT TIME SPAN NUMBER OF COPIES ACCURACY OF COPIES Plato BC 900 AD 1200 Years Aristotle BC 1100 AD 1400 Years Sopocles BC 1000 AD 1400 Years Homer (Iliad) 9t Cent. BC 400 BC 500 Years % New Testament AD 125 AD 25 Years* over 24,000** 99+% * to earliest manuscript fragment of book of Jon; ~ 100 years to large NT texts; 250 years to single, complete NT (Codex Sinaiticus) ** 5,300 Greek texts, 10,000 Latin Vulgate translations, 9,300 oter early translations 58 Historical and Arceological Evidence As a last line of evidence, we can compare te people, places, and events recorded in te Bible wit istorical and arceological evidence from te same periods. Wat do we find? As te prominent Australian arceologist Clifford Wilson wrote, Tose wo know te facts now recognize tat te New Testament must be accepted as a remarkably accurate source book. Take Luke for example, te careful istorian wo wrote Luke and Acts (see Luke 1:1-4). In Luke 3:1, e refers to Lysanias as tetrarc of Abilene in 27 AD, wic seemed to contradict istorical evidence until te discovery of an inscription written between 14 and 37 AD tat confirmed Luke s statement. Acts 17:6 refers to politarcs in Tessalonica, tougt for years to be a istorical mistake until confirmed by numerous inscriptions found in te excavation of Tessalonica and dating from te first century. In fact, not a single arceological discovery contradicts Luke s references to 32 countries, 54 cities, and 9 islands! Suc data sould not surprise us because te biblical autors were typically very near in time, place, and participation to te events tey recorded. Even secular istorians note tat te nearer an autor was to te events e recorded, te more reliable is account would be. Find more on te reliability of scripture under lesson 9 at:

Now we need to move on to Ben s objections to reading scripture. If you remember, Ben avoided te Bible for two reasons. First, e saw little practical benefit to reading scripture on a daily basis. It just didn t seem to ave any bearing on is real-world life. Second, wen e did spend time in te Bible e got very little out of it. He ad no clear metod for studying and applying scripture in a way tat would truly benefit im. So let s tackle bot of tese objections in order 3 Wy Sould I Spend te Time? Wy sould we take time out of our ectic lives to delve into God s Word? Take a few minutes to look up te following passages and answer te corresponding questions: Read Isaia 55:11 and Hebrews 4:1 Wat sort of power does te Word of God ave? How sould tis reality affect our view of scripture? Read Psalm 119:9-11, Jon 8:31-32, and Pilippians 4:8-9. How does our knowledge of God s Word enable us to ward off te attacks of te world, te devil, and te fles? 3. Wat oter reasons for investing daily time in scripture do you learn from te following passages? Psalm 1:1-3 Mattew 7:24-27 Romans 15:4 1 Peter 2:2 2 Timoty 3:16-17 So, wy sould we spend our time studying te Bible? Because only as we personally spend time in God s Word will we grow in our fait, become mature followers of Crist, and reac out to oters effectively in eternally significant ways. 59

4 How Can I Get te Most Out of It? Many Cristians believe tat spending time in God s Word is essential, yet never do because tey don t know ow. Tere are tree basic metods by wic we delve into God s Word in a meaningful way, and we sould eac be practicing tese on a regular basis: Read scripture Toug your previous attempts to read troug te Bible on a daily basis may ave proven frustrating, use tese tips to get te most out of your reading: Start and end wit prayer since understanding God s Word requires His illumination (1 Corintians 2:10-13). Read wen you are at your mental best. Coose a period of te day wen you are fres and alert and seek out a place were you can focus witout distraction. 3. Alternate between reading and meditating. Meditating is prayerful reflection on wat you re reading wit a view to bot understanding it and applying it to your life. 4. Alternate between different types of scripture. Peraps spend one day in Psalms and anoter in Jon. Wen you finis one book, coose a different type of book to keep you fres and engaged. Memorize scripture Committing portions of scripture to memory is immeasurably elpful in our battle against sin. Read Mattew 4:1-11 and note ow Jesus used memorized scripture to defend Himself. You can memorize verses from any translation of scripture, but it s elpful to stick wit one. Work on your memory verses regularly and review tose you ve completed. Finally, it s often elpful to ave a partner ceck your progress and old you accountable. 60 Study Scripture In 2 Timoty 2:15, Paul encourages Timoty to, be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman wo does not need to be asamed, accurately andling te word of trut. We are all called to follow Timoty s example by becoming competent students of God s Word, not just reading and memorizing it, but also delving deeply into it troug our own regular study. To effectively study God s Word we need to apply te four steps on te following page to eac book and passage we study. Te Scriptures were not given to increase our knowledge but to cange our lives. Dwigt L. Moody

Survey: Wat s te big picture? Before getting into te details of individual verses, read te wole section (paragrap, capter, or book) quickly troug to get a sense of te big idea. Wat are te key temes of tis section? Wat major words are repeated or empasized? How would you summarize tis section in a sort title? Observation: Wat do I see? We can t ope to understand a passage or apply it to our lives until we carefully note wat it says. So spend some time in eac verse noting everyting you see. Particularly look for: key words tat are important teologically or tematically, including words tat are repeated. verbs tese are crucial to understanding te autors main idea. 3. connecting words suc as and, likewise, if, but, for, terefore, so tat tese are crucial to understanding te autor s flow of tougt. 4. te 5 W s and an H note wo is doing te action, wat tey re doing, wom it is benefiting or arming, and wen, wy, and ow tey did it. Interpretation: Wat does it mean? Te goal of interpretation is to determine wat te original autor was saying to te original recipients of te book or letter. Start by peppering te passage wit lots of Wat and Wy questions suc as: WHAT is te meaning of a word? significance of a word or prase? implication of a statement? relationsip between words, prases, or passages? WHY did te autor coose tis word or prase? not say? connect tese ideas? put tis idea before tat idea? include tis idea at all? Once you ve asked your questions, find answers by: using te context follow te autor s flow of tougt trougout te capter and book. defining key words use an Englic dictionary or Bible dictionary. 3. studying cross-references look up te references provided in your Bible s margins or in a concordance. 4. wrestling wit te text carefully tink troug te options and decide on te best interpretation; consult oter people or commentaries to gain additional insigts. Application: How does it work? Now tat you ave an idea wat te passage meant to te original audience, it s time to apply it s truts to your own life. Tis requires tree steps: Determine one or more timeless principles from te passage. Tese are succinct statements of trut tat still apply to you today. Coose one principle to apply tis week. Reflect on your own obedience to tis principle. Wen do you do well? Wen do you struggle to live tis out? 3. Create a concrete plan of action. Take one area of your life were you are struggling to live tis principle out and commit to make canges towards greater obedience tis week. Be specific wat exactly will you do differently tis week tan last? Wo will you ask to old you accountable? 61

praxis G practice study Now tat you know a basic metod for studying scripture, let s try it on Mattew 28: Survey: Read Mattew capter 28. Wat is going on in tis capter? How does it fit into te overall story of Jesus life? Observe: Read Mattew 28:18-20 twice. Write down at least fifteen observations. -e.g. Jesus uses te structural indicator terefore (v.19) -e.g. te disciples are commanded to baptize in te name of all tree memebers of te trinity 3. Interpret: Read Mattew 28:18-20 again. Write out five interpretive questions and ten attempt to answer tem. It is all rigt if you can t answer tem all. -e.g. Wy does Jesus mention is autority in v.18? -e.g. Wat is te connection of is autority to te command given in vv.19,20? Apply: Write tree principles from Mattew 28: Pray for wisdom and select one principle tis week to attempt to implement wit te Holy Spirit s power. Wat specifically will you do differently tis week tan last and wo will old you accountable? Ignorance of te Bible means ignorance ofcrist. --Jerome
