1 Daarul Uloom Islamic School DU HEADLINES Always striving for knowledge, faith, & morality Issue 4 October 2014/Dhul-Hijjah 1435 AH We are Sailing the S.E.A.S. of Success! Successfully Educating All Students Insha'Allah this reaches you in the best of states. On behalf of the school board, teachers and administration of Daarul Uloom, we would like to wish you and your loved ones Eid Mubarak! We pray to Allah (swt) that the joy of Eid lasts in your hearts all the way until the next Eid. On this day of celebration and commemoration of the sacrifices of Prophet Ibrahim, Hajar and Prophet Ismail (may Allah be pleased with them all), may Allah ease the hearts of all who are suffering, replace pain with comfort and joy, sickness with health, and fill our hearts with the hope and tawakkul (trust in Allah). Don't let this opportunity for creating an exciting celebration for your children pass by. These are the days that will flavor their memories of their childhood as Muslims for years to come. School will be closed Monday and Tuesday, October 6th - 7th. We will return on Wednesday, October 8th. We wish you all a blessed Eid celebration with families and friends. "Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or transgression, shall return [free from sins] as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him." Due to unforeseen circumstances, Eid Carnival which was planned on Saturday, October 11th, 2014, will be rescheduled to Saturday, November 1st, 2014 Inshaallah. Details on the event will be provided at a later date. Stay posted for updates and for donations and volunteering opportunities. (Al-Bukhari)
2 Issue 4 October 2014/Dhul-Hijjah 1435 AH DU HEADLINES Page 2 Signing up to volunteer for an event has always been done at school. It has been working well, but not as effective as it could be. Parents have to be in school to sign-up to volunteer for an event, or sign-up during conferences. We are very fortunate to be part of a community where all parents have internet access on a regular basis and the majority of our communication happens via . For this reason, Daarul Uloom will be using the Google Docs to allow parents to have access and sign-up for any volunteering opportunities for an event or conferences from anywhere as long as they have access to an internet. This shared Google document will allow parents to sign-up on a live sign-up sheet. As parents adds their contribution and fill in their names in the appropriate places, the shared document would be updated automatically. However, this Google spreadsheet is not meant to be edited by the phone's browser. If you would like to do it through the phone, it's recommended to install the Google drive app. It's a slight inconvenience, but signing up will have to be done with a laptop or desktop if you don't have the app installed. We hope that this added tool will encourage all parents to volunteer and make the process easier for all, Inshaallah. Parent-teacher conference is often one of the only opportunities parents get to meet with their child's teacher one-onone. "You gain the perspective of a trained professional who spends an enormous amount of time with your child," says Grace-Marie Rozea, New York State region director for the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Teachers Want Your Input Teachers want to be apprised of any changes your child is facing in his personal or family life, and how he behaves at home in comparison to how he acts at school. Your child's comfort level in the classroom, whether he's found his niche among fellow students, and whether he seems stressed or happy are all important clues to his social and emotional well-being. Before the Teacher Conference Start preparing early. Create a folder at the beginning of the year in which you store test scores, big homework assignments, and your notes (about things your child has told you or any other topics you want to address). Talk to your child. Ask how she's doing in class, what's going on during lunchtime, recess, and when she goes to special classes like gym. During the Teacher Conference Arrive early. Enter with the right attitude. The goal of both the teacher and the parent should be the success of the student. Arrive with a compliment to start the conference off on the right foot. ("My son is really enjoying the unit on space" or "We had a great time on the field trip.") Then address any concerns in a respectful way. Find out the communication protocol. Don't let this be the only time you talk to your child's teacher. Ask how she likes to communicate. After the Teacher Conference Follow up. If the teacher brings something to your attention that needs to be addressed with your child, take steps to put the plan in motion, whether it's helping with organizational skills, getting extra help, or addressing a social issue. Update your child. Start with the positive things her teacher had to say, then fill her in on any concerns you and the teacher discussed. Explain how you can all work together to ensure your child has a successful year.

In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first Nation Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. The 2014 Fire Prevention Week theme is Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month! Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly half of home fire deaths result from fires between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. Changing Your Clocks? Change your Batteries! Daylight Savings Time ends on November 2nd and it is an ideal time to replace smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries. This simple task is quick and easy and can save your life! The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance recommends the following: Smoke alarms should be located inside and outside of each bedroom and sleeping area. Alarms should be installed on every level of the home, including the basement. Test alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. Replace all alarms when they are 10 years old. A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet away from the stove.
4 Issue 4 October 2014/Dhul-Hijjah 1435 AH DU HEADLINES The highest result of education is tolerance. (Helen Keller) Tolerance O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers. [ Al-Hujurat, Ayah 11] Tolerance Page 4 "Anyone who believes in God and the Last Day (of Judgment) should not harm his neighbor. Anyone who believes in God and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously. And anyone who believes in God and the Last Day should say what is good or keep quiet." Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 47. For the past 18 years, WTVP has been providing free books to Central Illinois kids and schools through their PBS Ready To Learn program. Alhamdulillah, this year we received a generous donation of 300 books from their program! These books will be added to our classroom libraries. This contribution will help us develop the love for reading among our children! Thank you WTVP! 6 Issue 4 October 2014/Dhul-Hijjah 1435 AH DU HEADLINES In support of Bully Prevention Awareness Month, Daarul Uloom will be taking a stand in solidarity against bullying. Overall, schools are safe and nurturing places for students. School leaders and faculty are dedicated to making sure schools remain safe learning environments for all students. However, bullying is an issue that every school in the nation faces. Here at Daarul Uloom, we believe in working together with parents to combat bullying. We know this problem isn t confined to school grounds. Bullying at school affects and is affected by what happens at home between siblings, what happens in the neighborhood, and what happens when kids go online. We must work together to take immediate action, whether a child bullies, is a victim of bullying, or is a witness to bullying. Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. Please see the below tips that may help prevent bullying. Page 6 1. Encourage your child to report Work with school staff to protect bullying incidents to you. your child from possible retaliation.
