1 1 40 Hadiths on Marriage with Faraz Rabbani 2 Part One: Guidance on Getting Married and the Benefits of Marriage Hadith One. يا معشر الشباب من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج فإنه أغض للبصر وأحصن للفرج ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم فإنه له وجاء 3 upon him) said, O youth! Whoever of you is able to marry should do so, because it helps in lowering your gaze and in guarding your desires. And whoever is not able to marry should fast, for it will be a barrier for them. [Bukhari and Muslim, from Ibn Mas ud] Hadith Two. عن أنس أن نفرا من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم سألوا أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن عمله في السر فقال بعضهم: ال أتزوج النساء وقال بعضهم: ال آكل اللحم وقال بعضهم: ال أنام على فراش فحمد الله وأثنى عليه. فقال: «ما بال أقوام قالوا كذا وكذا لكني أصلي وأنام وأصوم وأفطر وأتزوج النساء فمن رغب عن سنتي فليس مني» 4 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Rather, I pray and sleep; I fast and skip fast; and I am married. And whoever turns away from my example is not from me. [Muslim and others]
2 Hadith Three. عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " تنكح المرأة [ص: 8 ] ألربع: لمالها ولحسبها وجمالها ولدينها فاظفر بذات الدين تربت يداك " 5 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, A woman may be married for for reasons: (1) her wealth; (2) her social status; (3) her beauty; and (4) her religion. Seek the one who has religion, and you rejoice. [Bukhari] Hadith Four. عن أنس بن مالك قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يأمر بالباءة وينهى عن التبتل نهيا شديدا ويقول: " تزوجوا الودود الولود إني مكاثر األنبياء يوم القيامة " 6 The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to command people to marry, and would intensely interdict them from remaining single. And he would say, Marry those caring and nurturing. Truly, I will take pride before other Prophets in your numbers on the Day of Resurrection. [Ahmad, others] Hadith Five. عن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاصي عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: " إن الدنيا كلها متاع وخير متاع الدنيا المرأة الصالحة 7 upon him) said, This world is all provision. And the best of its provision is the righteous woman. [Ahmad] Hadith Six. 8 جابر بن عبد الله قال: تزوجت امرأة في عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلقيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: «يا جابر تزوجت» قلت: نعم قال: «بكر أم ثيب» قلت: ثيب قال: «فهال بكرا تالعبها» قلت: يا رسول الله: إن لي أخوات فخشيت أن تدخل بيني وبينهن قال: «فذاك إذن إن المرأة تنكح على دينها ومالها وجمالها فعليك بذات الدين تربت يداك» Jabir ibn Abd Allah relates that he married during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him). When he met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he asked him: O Jabir, did you get married? He said that he did. The Prophet asked him whether it was a virgin or someone previously-married. Jabir said: Previously married. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, Why didn t you marry a virgin whose company would be playful? Jabir said: O Messenger of Allah, I have sisters, and was afraid that a young wife create distance between me and them. The Messenger approved [Muslim]
3 Hadith Seven. عن أنس قال: قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: «حبب إلي النساء والطيب وجعل قرة عيني في الصالة» 9 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Women and perfume have been made beloved to me. And the joy of my eyes is in the prayer. [Nasa i, Kubra] Hadith Eight أبي ه ر ي ر ة ر ض ي الل ه ع ن ه أ ن ر س ول الله - ص ل ى الله ع ل ي ه و سلم - ق ال : «ث ال ث ة حق ع ل ى الله [أ ن] يعينهم: ال م ج اه د ف ي س ب يل الله والناكح ي ر يد أ ن يستعفف و ال مك اتب ي ر يد األ د اء». 10 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, There are three whom Allah has taken on to assist: the one striving in the path of Allah; the one marrying to maintain dignified restraint; and the indentured slave seeking to earn their freedom. [Nasa i, Tirmidhi; sound] Hadith Nine إذا تزوج العبد فقد استكمل نصف الدين فليتق الله في النصف الباقي 11 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, If a servant married, they have completed half their religion. And let them be mindful of Allah for the remaining half. [Bayhaqi] Hadith Ten 12 وعن جابر قال: «قال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم -: " أيما شاب تزوج في حداثة سنه عج شيطانه: يا ويله يا ويله عصم مني دينه» upon him) said, If any young person marriages at a young age, their Devil flees, crying, What loss! What loss! They ve shielded their religion from me! [Abu Ya la, Tabarani]
4 Hadith 11 «أربع من سنن المرسلين: الحياء والتعطر والنكاح والسواك» 13 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Four traits are from the example of the Messengers: modesty; perfume; marriage; and brushing teeth. [Tirmidhi] Hadith 12 وعن أبي هريرة قال: لو لم يبق من أجلي إال يوم واحد لقيت الله بزوجة. سمعت رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - يقول: " شراركم عزابكم». 14 Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) said that: I I only had one more day to live, I would face Allah with a wife. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) say, The worst of you are those single. [Abu Ya la, Tabarani, weak] Hadith أعلنوا هذا النكاح واجعلوه في المساجد واضربوا عليه بالدفوف زاد البيهقي: (وليولم أحدكم ولو بشاة فإذا خطب أحدكم امرأة وقد خضب بالسواد فليعلمها وال يقرنها) 15 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Publicize these marriages. Perform them in the mosque. And strike the duff for them. [Tirmidhi, from A isha] Bayhaqi added: And hold a wedding feast (walima), even if with only one sheep. And if any of you proposes to a woman, while having dyed your hair black, then you must tell her and not hide it. Hadith تخ ير وا لن ط ف ك م و ان ك ح وا األ كفاء و ان ك ح وا إ ل ي ه م upon him) said, Choose carefully for the sake of your offspring. Marry those suitable, and marry others to those suitable. [Hakim, others]
5 17 Hadith 17 خير النكاح أيسره The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, The best marriage is the easiest. [Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban, others] Hadith إال أن تفعلوا ذا خطب إليكم من ترضون دينه وخلقه فزوجوه تكن فتنة في األرض وفساد عريض The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, If someone proposes to you whose religion and character is pleasing to you, then marry them. If you don t, there will be great tribulation on earth, and widespread corruption. [Tirmidhi] Hadith ال نكاح إال بولي upon him) said, There is no marriage except with a guardian. [Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud] Hadith 20. Hadith of Intention. فمن كانت هجرته إلى الله وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى وفي رواية بالنبة إنما األعمال بالنيات فهجرته أو امرأة يتزوجها ومن كانت هجرته إلى دنيا يصيبها فهجرته إلى الله ورسوله ورسوله إلى ما هاجر إليه upon him) said, Actions are by intentions. And each person will have whatever they intended. So whoever s migration was to Allah and His Messenger, then their migration was indeed to Allah and His Messenger. And whoever s migration was for some worldly gain or a woman to marry, then their migration was to whatever they migrated for. [Bukhari and Muslim, from Umar] 20
6 21 Part Two: Guidance on Successful Marriage Hadith أكمل المؤمنين إيمانا: أحسنهم خلقا وخياركم: خياركم ألهله The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) said, The believers most perfect in faith are those best in character. And the best of you are those best to their spouses. [Tirmidhi] And in another narration: Those gentlest to their spouses. [ibid.] Hadith 22 األسود بن يزيد النخعي - رحمه الله - قال: سألت عائشة - رضي الله عنها -: «ما كان رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم- يصنع في بيته قالت: يكون في مهنة أهله فإذا حضرت الصالة يتوضأ ويخرج إلى الصالة» A isha was asked about what the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) did at home. She replied, He would be in the assistance of his family. Then, when prayer time came, he would perform wudu and head to prayer. [Bukhari and Tirmidhi] 23 Hadith 23 وقالت: "ما ضرب رسول الل ه صلى الل ه عليه وسلم شيئ ا ق ط بيد ه وال امرأة وال خاد م ا A isha (Allah be pleased with her) said, The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) never hit anything whatsoever with his hands not a woman, nor a servant [Muslim] 24
7 Hadith 24 حديث ع ل ي أ ن ف اط م ة ع ل ي ه ا الس ال م ش ك ت م ا ت ل ق ى م ن أ ث ر الر ح ا ف أ ت ى الن ب ي ص ل ى الل ه ع ل ي ه و س ل م س ب ي ف ان ط ل ق ت ف ل م ت ج د ه ف و ج د ت ع ائ ش ة ف أ خ ب ر ت ه ا ف ل م ا ج اء الن ب ي ص ل ى الل ه ع ل ي ه و س ل م أ خ ب ر ت ه ع ائ ش ة ب م ج يء ف اط م ة ف ج اء الن ب ي ص ل ى الل ه ع ل ي ه و س ل م إ ل ي ن ا و ق د أ خ ذ ن ا م ض اج ع ن ا ف ذ ه ب ت أل ق وم ف ق ال : ع ل ى م ك ان ك م ا ف ق ع د ب ي ن ن ا ح ت ى و ج د ت ب ر د ق د م ي ه ع ل ى ص د ر ي و ق ال : أ ال أ عل م ك م ا خ ي ر ا م م ا س أ ل ت م ان ي إ ذ ا أ خ ذ ت م ا م ض اج ع ك م ا ت ك ب ر ا أ ر ب ع ا و ث ال ث ين و ت س ب ح ا ث ال ث ا و ث ال ث ين و ت ح م د ا ث ال ث ة و ث ال ث ين ف ه و خ ي ر ل كم ا م ن خ اد م upon him) said to Ali and Fatima: should I not teach you that which is better [than a servant]? 25 Hadith 25 حديث ع ل ي أ ن ف اط م ة ع ل ي ه ا الس ال م ش ك ت م ا ت ل ق ى م ن أ ث ر الر ح ا ف أ ت ى الن ب ي ص ل ى الل ه ع ل ي ه و س ل م س ب ي ف ان ط ل ق ت ف ل م ت ج د ه ف و ج د ت ع ائ ش ة ف أ خ ب ر ت ه ا ف ل م ا ج اء الن ب ي ص ل ى الل ه ع ل ي ه و س ل م أ خ ب ر ت ه ع ائ ش ة ب م ج يء ف اط م ة ف ج اء الن ب ي ص ل ى الل ه ع ل ي ه و س ل م إ ل ي ن ا و ق د أ خ ذ ن ا م ض اج ع ن ا ف ذ ه ب ت أل ق وم ف ق ال : ع ل ى م ك ان ك م ا ف ق ع د ب ي ن ن ا ح ت ى و ج د ت ب ر د ق د م ي ه ع ل ى ص د ر ي و ق ال : أ ال أ عل م ك م ا خ ي ر ا م م ا س أ ل ت م ان ي إ ذ ا أ خ ذ ت م ا م ض اج ع ك م ا ت ك ب ر ا أ ر ب ع ا و ث ال ث ين و ت س ب ح ا ث ال ث ا و ث ال ث ين و ت ح م د ا ث ال ث ة و ث ال ث ين ف ه و خ ي ر ل كم ا م ن خ اد م upon him) said to Ali and Fatima: should I not teach you that which is better [than a servant]? 26 Hadith 25 قال الحسين: سألت أبي عن دخول النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فقال: كان دخوله لنفسه مأذونا له في ذلك فكان إذا أوى إلى منزله جز أ دخوله ثالثة أجزاء جزءا لله وجزءا ألهله وجزءا لنفسه ثم جز أ جزءه بينه وبين الناس فيسرد ذلك على العامة بالخاصة وال يد خر عنهم شيئا al-husayn asked his father, Ali, on how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spent his time at home 27 Hadith 26 عن أنس قال: خدمت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عشر سنين والله ما قال لي أف قط وال قال لي لشيء: لم فعلت كذا وهال فعلت كذا. Anas (Allah be pleased with him) said: I served the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for ten years. By Allah, he never even said Uff to me. Nor did he say regarding anything Why did you do it nor Why didn t you do it. [Bukhari and Muslim 28
8 Hadith خدمت رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- سنين فما سبني سبة قط وال ضربني ضربة وال انتهرني وال عبس في وجهي وال أمرني بأمر فتوانيت فيه فعاتبني عليه فإن عاتبني عليه أحد من أهله قال: "دعوه فلو قدر شيء لكان". Anas also related that, I served the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) for many years. He never ever insulted me. He never ever hit me. Nor did he rebuke me. Nor did he ever frown at me. Nor did he ever command me to do anything that I delayed and then rebuke me for it. If any of his family rebuked me, he would say, Let him be. Had it been destined, it would have happened. Hadith قالت عائشة: «كنت أغتسل أنا ورسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم- من إناء بيني وبينه واحد فيبادرني حتى أقول: دع لي دع لي قال: وهما جنبان». A isha (Allah be pleased with her) on the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) bathing with her, and competing for the water [Bukhari and Muslim] Hadith 29 ح د يث مسابقته ص ل ى الله ع ل ي ه و سلم لع ائ ش ة فسبقته ثم سبقها 31 «و ق ال «ه ذ ه ب ت ل ك upon him) raced A isha and she won. Later, he won, and said, This one was for that one. [Abu Dawud, others] Hadith ع ن ع ائ ش ة ق ال ت: ر أ ي ت الن ب ي صلى الله ع ل ي ه و سلم يسترني بردائه و أ ن أنظر إ ل ى ال ح ب ش ة ي ل ع ب ون ف ي ال م س ج د ح ت ى أكون أ نا ال ذ ي أسأمه فاقدروا قدر ال ج ار ي ة الحديثة السن الحريصة على الل ه و. [متفق عليه] The Prophet shielding A isha with his cloak as she stood by him watching the Abysinians dance in the Mosque [Bukhari and Muslim]
9 Hadith 31 ع ن ع ائ ش ة ق ال ت: ق ال لي ر س ول الله صلى الله ع ل ي ه و سلم: " إ ن ي ألع لم إ ذا كنت عني راضية و إ ذا كنت ع لي غاضبة " ق ال ت: ف قلت: و من أ ي ن.تعرف ذ ل ك ق ال " أما إ ذا كنت عني راضية ف إن ك ت ق ول ين : ال و رب م ح م د و إ ذا كنت غ ض بي قلت: ال و رب إ ب ر اه يم. " ق ال ت: قلت: أجل و الله ي ا ر س ول الله م ا أ هجر إ ال اس مك The Prophet to A isha: I know when you are upset with me! [Bukhari and Muslim] 33 Hadith عمر بن أبي سلمة -رضي الله عنهما - قال: «كنت غالما في حجر رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم- وكانت يدي تطيش في الصحفة فقال لي رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم-: يا غالم «سم الله وكل بيمينك وكل مما يليك فما زالت تلك طعمتي بعد The Prophet correcting Umar ibn Abi Salama when he was eating poorly [Bukhari and Muslim] Hadith عائشة - رضي الله عنها - قالت: «كنت أشرب من اإلناء وأنا حائض ثم أناوله النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم- فيضع فاه على موضع في» A isha (Allah be pleased with her) on the Prophet taking the cup she drank from and then drinking from exactly where she drank from. [Muslim] Hadith عائشة - رضي الله عنها - قالت: «كنت أشرب من اإلناء وأنا حائض ثم أناوله النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم- فيضع فاه على موضع في» A isha (Allah be pleased with her) on the Prophet taking the cup she drank from and then drinking from exactly where she drank from. [Muslim]
10 Hadith 35 م كلثوم بنت عقبة قالت: ما سمعت رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - ي رخ ص في شيء من الكذب إال في ثالث: كان رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - يقول: "ال أعد ه كذابا (3) الرجل ي صلح بين الن اس و (4) يقول القول ال يريد به إال اإل صالح والرجل يقول في الحرب والرجل يحدث امرأته والمرأة تحدث زوجها. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not allow anything of lying But there were three things he did not consider lying: (1) someone who was mending relations between people and would say things seeking only to mend relations; (2) what a person might say in war; and (3) what a husband tells his wife, and what a wife tells her husband. [Abu Dawud] 37 Hadith 36 تهادوا فإن الهدية تذهب وحر الصدر 38 upon him) said, Exchange gifts, because gifts dispel ill-feelings. [Tirmidhi] Hadith 37 «أال أخبركم بأفضل من درجة الصيام والصالة والصدقة [ص: 669 ] قالوا: بلى قال: صالح ذات البين فإن فساد ذات البين هي الحالقة» upon him) said, Should I not tell you what is even better than the rank of fasting, prayer, and charity? Mending harmed relations [Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud] 39 Hadith 38 إن أشكر الناس لله تبارك وتعالى أشكرهم للناس upon him) said, The people most thankful to Allah are those who are most thankful to people. [Ahmad and Tabarani] In another narration: Whoever is not thankful to people is not thankful to Allah. 40
11 Hadith 39 من اصطنع إليكم معروفا فجازوه فإن عجزتم عن مجازاته فادعوا له حتى يعلم أنه قد شكرتم فإن الله شاكر يحب الشاكرين 41 upon him) said, Whoever does good to you, return it to them. If you are unable to respond in kind, then pray for them until they know that you are truly grateful, because Allah is the Grateful and loves those grateful.
