1 U O F SE RVI C E T O TH E C OM RS A M E Y N 0 IT 5 Y P O Box 15291, Vlaeberg, 8018 EDITORIAL The passing on of Boeta Abdullah Amien on Easter Saturday, April 15, was met with great sadness by all at the Boorhaanol Movement who had known him for so long. He had been busy with the final layout of the Boeka Treats when Allah Almighty called him back. Issue No Years of creative services to the Movement All Boorhaanol Publications, including Kayfee, the Companion, Taraweeg Survey, Boeka Treats and Green Pages, bore the stamp of his incredible creative talent. He was integral in designing the cover design, the internal concept design, layout and graphics. His departure will leave a space almost impossible to fill. Boorhaanol Publications first engaged Abdullah to do the cover design of the 4th edition of the Taraweeg Survey in This design he accomplished by hand, for computers were not yet in commercial use. Since then, he had designed all the covers of all Boorhaanol Publications. The first full-colour cover of the Boorhaanol Islam Newsletter was made by him in 1992, and once the Boorhaanol Magazine went full colour for the entire publication, Abdullah provided design input for the whole magazine. In addition to the previously mentioned publications, Abdullah designed the Boeka Treats Food Guide, the Boeka Treats DVD, the Thikr Guides and Audio CD covers, as well as the autobiography of the late Imam Abdurahmaan Bassier, including all the hand drawings for the 20 short stories. Other projects he collaborated with Boorhaanol, include the Tricentenary logo, the Tana Baru logo and recently the logo for the Bo-Kaap Doekmal event. Apart from the exceptional quality of his work, Abdullah's humility and perseverance under pressure of looming deadlines was exemplary. Everyone was welcome at Abdullah's home; whether those seeking knowledge of the Deen and the Qur'an, or those in search of his artistic genius. Truly a humble man who served humanity for the sake of Allah alone. He is survived by his wife Asa, sons Ziyaad and Rafiek, daughter Azara and 8 grandchildren. We make dua that Allah the Most Merciful place him in the highest place in Paradise and put sabr in the hearts of his family, friends and students. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing. Surah 17: 1 We are reminded by the blessed night of Miraj or Ascension of our link to Allah through solah for verily solah is the Miraj of the believer. Through our solah we are reconnected with Allah who is the One who can fix all problems, satisfy all needs and heal our sadness. In these troubled times let us turn to our daily prayers as a source of solace and comfort as Allah says: And seek assistance through patience and prayer... (2:45) We are also reminded with the passing of the month of Rajab that the holy month of Ramadan is almost upon us. We are taught that one accepted Ramadan is sufficient to secure our place in Jannah. We therefore need to strive in the coming weeks of Sha baan to prepare ourselves to maximise our chances of success during Ramadan, as it was reported that the prophet (s) fasted the most outside of Ramadan during Sha baan as a means of preparation. It gives us great pleasure to announce that this year s post-taraweeg Ramadan theme will be The Tafsir of Juz Amma and other frequently recited verses, Insha- Allah. Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O you that believe! Send your blessings on him, and salute him with all respect (Surah Al Ahzab 56). 2 Notice of Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Boorhaanol Movement will be held on Tuesday, 9th May 2017, at the Boorhaanol House in Almonda Street, Bo-Kaap, starting after Eshaa. Up for discussion at the AGM will be the establishment of a separate trust for the Masjied property in Longmarket Str, as distinct from the existing Trust which caters for the legal needs of the Movement's properties in Pentz St. and Almonda St. Also the current Constitution needs to be amended to streamline the administration of the Movement, which means that these proposals will be tabled for discussion without necessarily adopting these amendments. These are thus important times in establishing the direction in which the Movement is going, and everyone is urged to make a special effort to attend this crucial meeting. Half a century is a long time in our rapidly evolving society, and the Boorhaanol Movement's existence for that long bears testimony to its relevance as well as the tremendous work done by its people. In this column we afford readers a fascinating insight into the past by reproducing various memorabilia of that era. Our first glimpse looks at the minutes of a weekly executive meeting of the Boorhaanol Recreational Movement, handwritten by the Secretary, Mr K Abass, in an A4 hardcover book, containing all the minutes of meetings held by the Movement during that time. It was pristinely preserved and handed over to the Movement by his son, Yusuf, whom we profoundly thank for this invaluable piece of history, and pray that Allah Almighty grant both his parents, H Kassiem and H Marcia, as well as all our deceased, a high place in Jannah, Inshallah. A committee meeting was held at Mr H. Kamalie's residence at 72 Rose St Cape Town. Members present were as follows Messrs H.A.Jappie, M.S.Salie, T.Moosa, H.Kamalie, Y.Samaai, R.Isaacs, G.Abrahams, H.A.Bassier, K.Abbas, R.White, Emaam. Mr H.A. Jappie presided, minutes were read of previous meeting and confirmed in order by Mr R.White and seconded by Mr Y. Samaai (carried). Arising, Mr Y. Samaai reported tool for Kaa-tiel bought, light in yard seen to by Mr Samaai and Mr Moosa, letters of thanks sent to Sis Asa Kalam and Mr Yusuf Aziz. It was reported Blackboard received. 4 boorhaanol nursery & pre-primary school Report by Principal Manager Nuha Dramat Assalamu alaykum warahmatullaahi wabarakatu Moulood-an Nabi In the name of Allah and reciting salutations on Nabi Muhammad (SAW), the class of 2017, marched to the Boorhaanol Masjied to celebrate Moulood-an Nabi. Algamdulillaah, the year started off with good energy and enthusiasm which benefits us all. Honoured teachers Change is great, good, necessary and shakes us into the reality of the need for continuous growth in all areas of our life. This was clearly shown to us with the resignation of Teacher Muneebah Shaik and retirement of Aunty Jasmine Duncan, who have been loyal dedicated employees of the Boorhaanol Nursery and Pre- Primary for 15 years. We were very fortunate to have had the presence of these great ladies amongst us for so many years. Thousands of learners were taught to read the surah and then the Qur'an by Teacher Muneebah. She inculcated a love for Islamic principles and a genuine love for our Nabi Muhammad (SAW). She has always been active in teaching little learners all the skills necessary for reading and writing. Aunty Jasmine at her farewell function Teacher Mubeebah We make duah for the further growth and development of our beloved Teacher Muneebah in her new position at SACS, Ameen. We wish Aunty Jasmine a blessed retirement filled with barakat and ghair. This has opened the path for other great teachers to move up, as we now had a few promotions on offer. Divine intervention at play, Alghamdulillaah. Exciting opportunities The first term presented many opportunities, amongst others: The teaching staff were invited to an exciting workshop offering a new approach to early childhood learning based on neuroscience. We are in the process of prototyping this to suit our culture of Islam. Donation of books to start an in house library which is a much needed resource for the teaching staff. Utilising our beautiful new premises for additional fun activities outside. The future plan is to invite our neighbouring pre-schools and primary schools to join us in community programmes. Purchasing new mats for the Boorhaanol House classrooms, so our kids are warm and comfortable as winter approaches. Regular Water Wise craft and performing arts activities to ensure our learners appreciate the value and need of water. This project was created in view of our current water shortages. Ramadaan Countdown Project place! The purest of souls The second term begins on the April 18th and we are eager to start our Ramadaan Countdown Project. The annual sports day at the Schotcheskloof Civic is scheduled for Sunday, April 30th. We invite all Mureeds to come and support the nursery school at this fundraiser. Delicious food will be on sale and an exciting athletics contest between White House and Blue House will take Algamdulillaah, all of us at the Boorhaanol are so blessed to have the chance to work on a daily basis, with the purest of souls. The innocence of a child, makes you smile and opens your heart. This feeling of appreciation is what we want and need to nurture and carry us into the special month of the Qur'an. 5 We will be starting this year with a major event: The United World Karate Federation South Africa (UWKFSA) National Championships incorporating the Zone 6 championships which will be held on May 12th and May 13th at the Western Cape Sports School. Some of our seniors will be participating in the Zone 6 championships which is a great honour as they will be representing South Africa. Students have been training and working hard for the Children's UWKFSA championships. We wish the students all the best for the championships. 6 Boorhaanol Digital Media Team The Boorhaanol Digital Media Team (DMT) is slowly making progress to restructure its current web presence into a more streamlined, easy to use educational and interactive tool that will serve as a mouthpiece to its members as well as the broader community at large. 7 Scholarships Awarded AMATIE IMAM MANIE HADJI MARELDIA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (AMS) (IMMS) (HMMS) The scholarship for 2017 has been awarded to NOORUNISAH ABBAS from Hanover Park Cape Town. The scholarship for 2017 has been awarded to MOGAMAD RAZEEN STOFFBERG from Kenwyn Cape Town. He is currently a second year BA student in Islamic Studies at IPSA. This scholarship was established in 1429AH (2008) in honour of Imam Abdurahman Bassier who served the South African Muslim community with distinction for over 40 years. The scholarship for 2017 has been awarded to FAATIMAH WEST of Plattekloof Cape Town. She is currently a first year BA student (in Islamic Studies) at IPSA having completed the Higher Certificate in Islamic Studies(HCIS) at IPSA in This scholarship was established in 1987 in honour of Hadji Mariam Dramat (née Bassier) who, for well over 50 years, served the Western Cape Muslim community with commitment and distinction. The scholarship is a tribute to the colossal contribution she made to the upliftment of the Ummah via her role as leader, teacher, social worker and confidante to countless women. Imam Bassier was instrumental in the establishment of, inter alia, the Boorhaanol Recreational Movement, the national Muslim Prisons Board, the Tana Baru Trust and its forerunner the Committee for the Preservation of the Tana Baru and was an active participant in the Inter-Faith Forum, the Schotchekloof Ratepayers Association and the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) where he served as chairperson in the seventies. She is currently completing her BA in Islamic Studies at IPSA. This scholarship was established in Ramadaan 1434AH (July 2013) in honour of Hadji Mareldia Bassier (née Ederies) who served the Boorhaanol Islam Movement specifically and the Bo-Kaap community generally for well over forty years. All three awards being scholarships (and not bursaries), financial need is NOT a primary consideration but the scholarships are geared towards encouraging those students who demonstrate leadership potential, academic excellence and strive to embrace the Islamic qualities of humility, piety, Akhlaaq and Aadaab. The scholarships are open to students studying at IPSA - with the IMMS for male students and the AMS and HMMS for female students. The AMS has its focus on leadership potential whilst the HMMS rewards academic excellence.children making duah for their deceased parents. 8 AN INITIATIVE OF THE BO-KAAP CIVIC AND RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY On Saturday December 17th Bo-Kaap residents were treated to a day of festivities. They had the opportunity to appreciate symbolism and to see politicians, when the area's name was officially proclaimed on the forecourt of the Boorhaanol Centre. Variously referred to by the authorities by its imperial names of Schotchekloof or Schoone Kloof, the Bo-Kaap's boundaries were in the process also re-defined to extend from Strand Street to Carisbrook Street, and from Buitengracht Street all the way up to Military Road. Ownership back to the people The Doekmal Event concept was conceived to give ownership of the area back to residents, as well as helping them to unite to meet the many challenges facing the area. The day was a huge success. It kicked off early at 7.30am when Muslim, Christian and Khoisan leaders and community elders gathered in the Strand Street quarry where the rocks used to build many of the city's buildings were mined. Habibia Pipe Brigade After two short prayers, the group, led by the Habibia Pipe Brigade, marched down Strand Street, then up Buitengracht Street to symbolically demarcate some of the boundaries of the Bo-Kaap. Back to the Boorhaanol Centre, where officials were feverishly processing all the participants for the Main Walk. Soon after 8am over 700 people of all age groups set off from Yusuf Drive up to the Noon Gun site, down Military Road into Carisbrook Road, then along the busy Buitengracht Street, up Dorp Street past the Auwal Mosque and back to the Boorhaanol Centre. Cutting the red ribbon The organizing committee, led by Mohammad Groenewald, had devised for the main event, a full programme to complement the unveiling of the Bo-Kaap name, which was jointly performed by two elders in the community, Hadji Mustapha Salie and Hadji Taliep Sydney, who cut the traditional red ribbon in the presence of the huge crowd. Politicians talk The keynote address, on behalf of the Minister of Arts and Culture, was delivered by Minister Ebrahim Patel, who focused on the economic development of the people in the community and the implementation of business projects which the government will assist, but they had to be driven by the community. He suggested that Bo-Kaap look at the business models of other communities like Soweto and elsewhere to develop similar strategies of sustainable development. The crowd was also addressed by the Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, who identified the tourism potential of the area and stressed that the community must own the industry. He reiterated the need to look at a business model for the community. Spreading barakah In between the speeches various musical items were performed, interfaith prayers were recited and a three-shot cannon was fired from the Signal Hill Noon Gun to symbolize 300 years of Bo-Kaap life. Finally, lunch was served to the crowd, and true to the Bo-Kaap tradition, all guests were handed barakats of cake and food to take home. It will be remembered as a day when the Bo-Kaap regained its rightful place.
