It was the beginning of yet another glorious chapter in the history of Indian classical music. Taught by his father Haafiz Ali Khan, a musician to the royal family of Gwalior, Amjad Ali Khan was born to the illustrious Bangash lineage rooted in the Senia Bangash School of music. Today he shoulders the sixth generation inheritance of this legendary lineage. After his debut, the career graph of this musical legend took the speed of light, and on its way the Indian classical music scene was witness to regular and scintillating bursts of Raga supernovas. And thus, the world saw the Sarod being given a new and yet timeless interpretation by Amjad Ali Khan. Khan is one of the few maestros who consider his audience to be the soul of his motivation. As he once said, "There is no essential difference between classical and popular music. Music is music. I want to communicate with the listener who finds Indian classical music remote." He has performed at the WOMAD Festival in Adelaide and New Plymouth, Taranaki in New Zealand, WOMAD Rivermead Festival in UK, Edinburgh Music Festival, World Beat Festival in Brisbane, Summer Arts Festival in Seattle, BBC Proms, International Poets Festival in Rome, Shiraz Festival, UNESCO, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Adelaide Music Festival, 1200 Years celebration of Frankfurt and Schonbrunn in Vienna. In the matter of awards, Amjad Ali Khan has the privilege of winning the kind of honours and citations at his relatively young age, which, for many other artistes would have taken a lifetime. He is a recipient of the UNESCO Award, Padma Vibhushan Highest Indian civilian award), Unicef's National Ambassadorship, The Crystal Award ( by the World Economic Forum and Hon'ry Doctorates from the Universities of York, England, Delhi University and the Vishva Bharti (Deshikottam) in Shantiniketan and "Commander of the order of Arts and letters" by the French Government and this year, the 15th Fukuoka Asian Culture Grand Prize 2004 in Japan. He represented India in the first World Arts Summit in Venice, received Hon'ry Citizenship to the States of Texas, Massachusetts, Tennessee and the city of Atlanta. April 20th, 1984 was declared as Amjad Ali Khan Day in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1995, Mr. Khan was awarded the Gandhi UNESCO Medal in Paris for his composition Bapukauns.

5 Project 3: Door Step School, Pune Project Name: Door Step School Location: Mumbai District, Maharashtra Sponsoring Chapters: Seattle, NYC/NJ, Atlanta (soon) Door Step School is a registered non-profit organization working in Mumbai and Pune, India. They conduct non-formal education classes for out of school and working children (7 to 18 years of age) residing in slums, on pavements, docks etc. With the introduction of the "School on Wheels" bus, Door Step has come closer to fulfilling one of its major objectives - making basic education easily accessible to a larger number of children. Amaan Ali Bangash A young talent of the 7th generation in an unbroken chain of the Senia Bangash School, Amaan Ali Bangash is the elder son and disciple of the Sarod Maestro Amjad Ali Khan and grandson of the Haafiz Ali Khan. Initiated into the fine art of Sarod playing at a very tender age, Amaan began his public performances as early as eight. Accompanying his father to various music festivals in India and abroad, he has today, carved out a niche for himself. His performances have evoked creditable applause. His precision in tunefulness and his bold and resonant strokes are all pointers to importance of tradition and continuity in Indian Classical Music. He made his debut abroad in 1986 at the Festival of India in Moscow. Today, Amaan is considered as one of the finest young Sarod players Ayaan Ali Bangash Ayaan Ali Bangash represents the seventh generation of a musical lineage known as the Senia Bangash School. The younger son and disciple of the Sarod titan Maestro Amjad Ali Khan, Ayaan stepped into the world of music and the Sarod with confidence, clarity, consistency and technical mastery that he learnt at his father's knee. After giving his solo debut at eight, Ayaan has been performing concerts world wide ever since. He has given many solo performances and also assisted his illustrious father at concerts all over the world. Ayaan has won the hearts of music lovers both in India and around the globe. He made his UK Debut in 1989 and the US Debut in 1991 at the Asia Society in New York and performed at St. James Palace in July 1997 for the Temenos Academy.

Center for Blind Women Project Name: Rehabilitation Center for Blind Women Location: Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu Sponsoring Chapters: Atlanta, New Jersey WHO WE ARE An organization dedicated to improving basic education for underprivileged children in India Not-for-profit, secular, global group 100% of donations distributed for intended use (what you donate is what we send) Volunteers include students, working professionals, artists, teachers, and others from around the world This first-of-its-kind institution in southern India provides rehabilitation and vocational training for blind women in poverty. These women are integrated into society in a self-fulfilling and meaningful manner. Asha financed the purchase of Braille equipment and food supplies. Project 2: Sahyog, Mumbai MILESTONES Over 600 projects funded to date $4 million in donations disbursed to date $1.6 million raised from 2002 to 2003 Presently over 1000 active volunteers Several thousand additional supporters Project Name: Sahyog Location: Mumbai Sponsoring Chapters: Atlanta Berkeley Sahyog is a school for girls in the Jari Mari Basti in Mumbai. It caters to the needs of adolescent girls who have had to drop out of school due to various societal pressures. Asha funds have gone towards supporting a formal school, an informal school, teacher training, workshops and fellowship programs at the school.
