3 Bradley Baptist Association/Ocoee Outreach Mission Haiti In 2011 Ocoee Outreach & the BBA will go international as we partner with TBC and SMI Haiti to share the Gospel and minister to the people of St. Ard, Haiti. St Ard is a village in a rural area approx. 1.5 hours from Port-Au-Prince that was decimated by the earthquake in January, Our theme for ministry for 2011 is His Love Reaching, based on the most familiar scripture verse in God s Word, John 3:16. Through Ocoee Outreach, the love of Christ and the Gospel Message will be reaching into Southeast Tennessee and into Haiti. Our Partners Along with the Tennessee Baptist Convention & Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, TN., Ocoee Outreach & the BBA is partnering with SMI Haiti, which stands for Sundouloi Ministries, Incorporated", a name that comes from the Greek sundoulos which means fellow servant. SMI s desire to join together with others of like-mind to fulfill the Lord s commission to care for His children. Sundouloi Ministries Inc., a 501(c)3 organization, was formed to supply practical and tangible aid to those in great need by providing finance for food, clean water, medical aid, missions facilities and other necessities. They have had a presence in Haiti for more than 10 years. Who Can Go? This is certainly not your run of the mill mission trip. Even before the destruction caused from the earthquake, Haiti was already a country that was significantly impoverished with relatively little infrastructure. The region is primarily tropical and the heat can be extraordinary. Volunteers must be careful in their activities, behavior, and ministry while in the country. For all of these reasons, it is critical that volunteer participants meet the following qualifications: Demonstrate a lifestyle of Christian maturity By physically, emotionally, and spiritually capable of working in the current Haitian environment Commit to working as a part of a team with no task too small for any one person. Willing to share their Christian testimony and witness as opportunities arise. Ages 15 and up. Must have completed 9 th Grade for Summer Trips or be completing 9 th Grade for the Spring Break Trip. For students between the ages of 15 and 18 there needs to be one adult for every four students, with every student having an adult from their church assigned to be responsible for him/her. Application Process & Training To accomplish this task, we are requiring all volunteers to go through an application process that we are asking your church to facilitate. This can be done through your missions committee, church staff, mission team leader(s), etc We will make available an application that can be used for each participant. If your church already has an application you use for international mission trips, let us review it to with you to make sure it covers the important bases. There will be other forms that will need to be filled out by mission team members that are approved by your church to go to Haiti that will be included in out next planning guide. There will also be some orientation and training we will ask your church to facilitate for all mission team members. We will provide you with the orientation and training materials.

4 4 Costs $100 plus airfare (costs includes lodging, ground transportation, food and construction materials while in Haiti, and also includes travel insurance) Airfare (Atlanta to Haiti via Miami) will vary depending on the week and is at this time the following costs: 1. Week 1 (March 19-26) $ (includes taxes which could change a little) 2. Week 2 (June 18-25) $724 (includes taxes which could change a little) 3. Week 3 (June 25 July 2) $ (includes taxes which could change a little) A $100 non-refundable deposit is due by December 1. Payment deadlines and other important deadlines will be provided in the next planning guide. Volunteers will need to take care of the cost for the recommended vaccines and the cost for obtaining a passport Volunteers will need to take care of their own meals while traveling to Haiti and back Final Payment Names, Participant Information Forms, Group Roster Due on Feb. 9, 2011 Final Payment at this time is $ The base fare will be guaranteed, however, taxes and fuel surcharges are subject to change until the tickets are issued. As is it is not possible to predetermine whether or not taxes and fuel fees will change, or if that change will be minimal or significant at the time your final payment is due Schedule for Equipping Sessions Participants Need to Attend! Mission Trip Training Session 1, Sunday, Jan. 23, 5pm. at FBC Cleveland Mission Trip Training Session 2, Sunday, Feb. 6, 4pm. at North Cleveland Baptist Packing Party, Wednesday, March 16, 7:30pm. at FBC Cleveland Mission Opportunities With the devastation of the earthquake and lack of infrastructure in the country there will be many hiccups in the road and will require mission teams to be very flexible and people oriented instead of task oriented. Haiti is a nation where the people need to be touched with the focus on the people not so much the work. Volunteers will most likely be able to serve through the following opportunities all of which will have an emphasis on evangelism: Construction this will have the heaviest emphasis and will need the most volunteers from those that are skilled in construction to those who will be helpers. The need is for a school to be rebuilt, 2 new schools to be built and to rebuild approximately 150 homes. Serving at Orphanage this will primarily take place during the evenings where volunteers will have the opportunity to interact, play games/crafts, encourage and love on more than 60 orphans. Mission work at a Medical Hospital/Clinic dependent upon if there are medical personnel coming with your team. In most cases they will be working along side Haitian medical personnel and will be serving at the Medical Hospital in the village of Saintard or taking the clinic out to other villages. Medical supplies and medicines will be greatly needed. Ministering at Youth Camp this will take place during the summer and will be dependent on if you have a team coming from your church that can facilitate a youth camp for Haitian young people. Leading a youth camp can involve Worship, teaching, preaching, and sports activities. Fluid is the key - additional ministry opportunities could include handing out food, eye clinics, drama groups, or other things that could be done without much notice

5 5 Support Personnel SMI & Ocoee Outreach will work together to provide a group leader and a cook for each group. The group leader will work with your team leader to insure that the supplies that are needed for your project are available and will serve as the intermediary between your group and the Haitian support personnel. The group leader will be familiar with procedures necessary when ministering in Haiti and with the Haitian culture. SMI group leaders have all been travelling to Haiti for over a decade and have participated in numerous mission projects. The cooks also have extensive experience cooking in Haiti and preparing for large groups. SMI has a missionary volunteer couple on the ground in Haiti that will coordinate each team and the day to day operations. Group Leader Each participating church will need to enlist someone who will serve as the group leader for your church and will take care of communication, logistics and administrative details pertaining to your group. They will also serve as the group leader while traveling and serving in Haiti. Lodging Lodging is provided at the 12,000sf SMI mission house in Guitton which is 35 miles north of Port Au Prince. Sleeping arrangements are dormitory style with separate rooms for men and women. The men s and women s restrooms each have three toilets, three showers and two sinks. There are also two private rooms with a connecting restroom. Sheets and towels are provided. A living room, dining room and spacious kitchen are found on the first floor of the mission house. The mission house does not have a/c. Food, Water, Ice, Drinks The majority of the food will be brought in from America with the mission teams. The food will be prepared by a cook provided by SMI and one or two helpers who come to Haiti from our church groups. Great care is taken to insure that any food purchased in Haiti is handled properly to minimize the possibility of foodborne illness. Culligan water and ice, coffee, drinks such as lemonade, and iced tea are provided. Airport Assistance The SMI group leader and cook will provide assistance upon arrival at the PAP airport. They will guide the group through immigration and will oversee claiming luggage, paying fees and exiting the airport. They will lead the group through the secured airport area to the waiting transportation. Transportation Transportation is provided between the airport and the mission house and between the mission house and the project site. Security SMI employs 2 Haitians to provide security for the group when traveling and at the mission house. There is a gated wall around the mission compound. Translators/Co-workers SMI employs 6-8 translators/co-workers (depending on the size of the group). These Haitians work alongside the Americans providing translation services and serving as a liaison between the group and the Haitian community. Recreation Time There will be an opportunity for the group to spend several hours at a local beach resort where they can enjoy time in the pool or ocean or just relaxing on the beach (gift shop w/souvenirs at beach site)

6 6 Project Coordination SMI is affiliated with over 200 Haitian churches, a hospital and an orphanage. A mission opportunity can be provided which fits the make-up and desires of your group. The SMI group leader will work with your team leader to make proper preparations to insure the success of your trip. Orientation, Evangelism Training, Spiritual Preparation - This is a must for all volunteers. Resources will be provided to assist churches in preparing volunteers for Haiti. Travel Insurance Included in the cost is a travel insurance policy providing coverage from Gallaher Charitable International Insurance Services (GCHS formerly know as Adams and Associates). The coverage will be for emergency medical care and emergency evacuation should it be necessary. This program is designed to cover people traveling overseas for a short period of time and compliment their current USA Medical Coverage. Travel Arrangements Ocoee Outreach has secured travel arrangements for all three weeks with travel companies that work very well with international church mission teams. You or someone from your church will need to be responsible for working with us in contacting the appropriate travel agency for your week with names, payment and other information. Haiti was once the wealthiest country in the Caribbean, bearing the title of "Mahogany Queen" for its rich supply of mahogany. Today Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti shares the Island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic The primary religion in Haiti is Roman Catholic at 80%, with an overwhelming majority of Haitians practicing voodoo. Protestant churches claim approximately 16%. Haiti is hot, with an average temperature between degrees. It takes approximately one hour and forty minutes to fly to Haiti from Miami. The name "Haiti" means land of many mountains. The estimated population of Haiti is 9.7 million.. The average life expectancy in Haiti is about 53 years. Eighty percent of the population lives below the poverty line. The official language of Haiti is French but the common language of the people is Haitian Creole. 8 Frequently Asked Questions and Answers 8 Q. Can I eat the food and drink the water in Haiti? A. No. Meals served will consist primarily of food brought from the States. We buy Culligan water in Haiti which is safe for drinking. Please don't eat or drink the Haitian food or water unless you are advised by one of the group leaders that it is safe to do so. Q. Will there be electricity or showers? A. The generator will probably run all of the time at the Mission Compound. Showers are available. (There is never any hot water.) Q. Must I have a passport to enter and exit Haiti? A. Yes. Passports are required to enter and exit Haiti. Please make sure your passport is current. If you do not have a passport, begin the process immediately since it can take several weeks to process an application. Q. How much extra money will I need? A. You will need to bring money for food while traveling in the U.S. You may also wish to purchase some souvenirs at the Port-Au Prince Airport or at a marketplace and to have some cash for offerings. When they pass the plate in church they expect everyone to put something in. Q. What kinds of things might we do? A. Our trip may include a number of different activities. Whatever the assignment, all are needed and used to see the project to completion. However, when there are breaks in the work, you will find yourself content interacting with and loving the Haitian people. Q. What kind of clothing should I bring? A. We suggest you bring cool cotton clothing for the hot days. It would also be wise to bring a light jacket or parka in case of rain. Shorts are acceptable for the women, but they should be knee-length. Sleeveless tops are acceptable (except for church), but no spaghetti straps. The women should bring a skirt or dress for church. Men are free to wear modest shorts, but will need pants and a polo shirt for church. You will want to bring tennis shoes and to have sandals or flip flops to protect your feet in the shower. You should avoid going barefoot even at the compound. Bring some clothes suitable for painting and other work projects. Q. What are the sleeping arrangements? A. You will be sleeping in a single or bunk bed in a fairly public area, so bring modest but cool sleeping attire. Bedding is provided. Q. How much luggage can I bring? A. Each person will be allowed one checked piece of luggage weighing no more than 50 pounds and not more than 62 inches in total dimension and one carryon plus a purse or personal item. If your bag weighs more than 50 pounds there will be a $50 charge. It is wise to pack any necessities and possibly a change of clothing in the carryon in case the luggage is misplaced by the airline. Remember that all liquids and gels carried on must be in 3 ounce or less containers and they all must fit in a one quart ziplock bag. Any other size liquid or gels will need to be packed in your checked bags. The purse or personal item must fit under the seat in front of you. A box embargo will be in effect so your luggage must be a standard suitcase or duffel bag. Q. How can I best prepare myself? A. Spiritual preparation is of utmost importance. We go to do more than just to complete a work project or to have a good time. We go to minister Jesus through the love of the Holy Spirit. Haiti is primarily a voodoo or occult worshipping nation. The powers of darkness are great, but this should not alarm or frighten us. Jesus said, "Some things come only through prayer and fasting." Therefore, we ask each participant to prepare by designating times of prayer each day and times of fasting as God may lead. This will help prepare your heart to minister to the Haitian people.

11 Recommended Vaccines 11 See your doctor before you travel to make sure you have had all necessary vaccines. Routine: Be sure that you are up to date on vaccines such as measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT), polio, seasonal and 2009 H1N1 flu, and varicella as appropriate for your age. This will protect you and also the people you are going to help. A current tetanus shot is also very important and needs to be less than 10 years old) Hepatitis A or immune globulin (IG): Even if your departure is imminent, one dose of hepatitis A vaccine provides adequate short-term protection for healthy people. For long term protection, a second dose is required 6 18 months after the first dose, depending on the brand of vaccine used. Typhoid: There are two vaccines available for typhoid prevention. The injectable vaccine may be preferable to the oral vaccine in cases where travel is imminent. The oral vaccine requires refrigeration and 4 tablets taken every other day over one week. Insect-borne Diseases: Malaria Malaria occurs in all parts of Haiti. Ways to prevent malaria include the following: Taking a prescription antimalarial drug Using insect repellent and wearing long pants and sleeves to prevent mosquito bites Sleeping in air-conditioned or well-screened rooms or using bed nets No antimalarial drug is 100% protective, so it is important to use all three ways to prevent malaria. All of the following antimalarial drugs are equal options for preventing malaria in Haiti: Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone), chloroquine, doxycycline, or mefloquine. Each drug has its own side effects, contraindications, and precautions. You will need to talk to your doctor to decide which of these drugs would be best for you, depending on your current health, medical history, drug allergies, and specific needs. *This information has been condensed from the Centers for Disease Control website to reflect current Health Department recommendations for our mission/work in Haiti. 12 PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES 12 No project is without expectations and standards. We want this to be a great week for you, your church group, and the people we serve on the field. So much is at stake, even in a short-term mission experience. Do your part to live up to these responsibilities: 1. Be responsible for exhibiting a Christ-like Spirit. Strive at all times to exhibit the best attitude towards other participants, your host, your project leadership, and the residents of the community. Do not abuse others with your words. Be an encourager. Be quick to make the best of things. 2. Be responsible for keeping yourself healthy. The use of tobacco, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, and non-prescription illicit substances is prohibited. Let the first Aid Coordinator know of any prescription medications you will be using during the week. 3. Be responsible for the safety of yourself and others. Possession and use of fireworks, firearms, and weapons of any kind is prohibited. Avoid practical jokes: they usually end up with someone getting hurt in some way. 4. Be responsible for following the Ocoee Outreach/Bradley Baptist Association schedule. No changes will be made in assignments or schedule without the permission of the Project Coordinator. In consideration of others, in rooms and lights out times will be respected. 5. Be responsible for staying in designated Ocoee Outreach/Bradley Baptist Association areas. For your own safety and security, you must stay with the group at all times. Please do not leave the ministry site or lodging facility without the permission of the project Coordinator. Also, there should be no aimless wandering in the lodging facility. Girls should not be in the boys rooms and boys should not be in the girls rooms. 6. Be responsible for guarding the possessions of others. Show the utmost of respect for others property and possessions by not tampering with or taking anyone s belongings. Do not play jokes by hiding someone s things. 7. Be responsible for maintaining a clean environment. Do your best to keep all areas of the lodging facility clean and free from litter. It is part of your witness when you are careful to respect the property and grounds of the place we call home for the week. Any damage to the lodging facility property or grounds becomes the personal responsibility of the person causing the damage. These responsibilities are designed to make the week a pleasant experience for all involved. If Ocoee Outreach/Bradley Baptist Association participants choose not to accept these responsibilities, they forfeit the privilege of project participation.

13 Praying for the Trip 13 "Some things come only through prayer and fasting." Pray specifically for the spiritual atmosphere of the trip. Pray for the mind of Christ among the group Pray that God will demonstrate His love through us. Pray that we will be culturally sensitive. Pray for physical and spiritual preparation. Pray all goes smoothly at the airlines with tickets & luggage. Pray for safe flights to and from Haiti. Pray for ease in going through customs lines that no items will be confiscated. Pray for safety as we travel to and from various locations. Pray for the people and spiritual climate of villages we will be in. Pray all needed supplies will be on site with no difficulty. Pray for wisdom for the leadership. Pray that the group will be unified. Pray for protection of the group. Pray for our times of fellowship. Pray for good weather conditions in Haiti. 15 15 OO/BBA DRESS CODE Ocoee Outreach/Bradley Baptist Association is a mission experience. Participants are on mission at all times: at ministry sites, at the lodging facility, and during free-time activities. A lot of advance work has been done to ensure that nationals know who we are and why we are there. We are closely watched. How we dress is an important part of our witness. Participants should make a special effort to wear clothes that are modest and appropriate for the ministry to which we have been called. DRESS CODE 1. Wear your Ocoee Outreach t-shirt while traveling. 2. T-shirts are okay at ministry sites and at the mission compound (but no tank tops, spaghetti straps, midriffs) 3. Shorts must meet or exceed your finger tips when your hands are at your side 4. Men must wear dress pants and polo shirts to church 5. Women must wear skirts to church 6. Closed toed shoes are required on the job site 7. Flip flops/tennis shoes are needed to wear around the mission house and compound 8. Bring gloves, hat, and safety glasses 9. Participants are to be fully dressed in accordance with this dress code at all times they are outside their assigned room at the lodging facility, including traveling to the bathroom. ENFORCEMENT OF DRESS CODE 1. Group Leaders are asked to review dress code with participants before leaving for the project. Pre-trip meetings are an excellent time to review the code. Please be certain everyone in your group understands what is required and what is prohibited. 2. Group Leaders will be asked to enforce the dress code among participants in their church group during the project. 3. The OO/BBBA staff will remind participants and Group Leaders of the dress code when necessary. 4. Violation of the dress code at ministry sites may result in participants being transported back to the lodging facility. Haiti was once the wealthiest country in the Caribbean, bearing the title of "Mahogany Queen" for its rich supply of mahogany. Today Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti shares the Island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic The primary religion in Haiti is Roman Catholic at 80%, with an overwhelming majority of Haitians practicing voodoo. Protestant churches claim approximately 16%. Haiti is hot, with an average temperature between degrees. It takes approximately one hour and forty minutes to fly to Haiti from Miami. The name "Haiti" means land of many mountains. The estimated population of Haiti is 9.7 million.. The average life expectancy in Haiti is about 53 years. Eighty percent of the population lives below the poverty line. The official language of Haiti is French but the common language of the people is Haitian Creole. 22 Spiritual Preparation: The most important preparation is Spiritual Preparation 22 At the end of mission trips like the one you are going on, participants have been asked, What would you have done differently to prepare for this campaign? The most common answer is, PRAYED MORE! While packing and logistics may loom larger in the next few weeks, strive to keep spiritual preparation your #1 priority. If you forget socks, you can borrow some. If you forget money, you can borrow some. Many stores, banks and businesses are just a few blocks away. But you can t borrow Spiritual Preparedness. The last thing you want to do is carry the kitchen sink to Cleveland, TN., but then stand in panic at someone s door, realizing too late that you gave the least attention to the very thing you came to do the most. Be more concerned about forgetting your spiritual armor instead of your worldly clothing! (Eph. 6:10-20). In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said, I [not you] will build MY church, and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it. This campaign is HIS work. HE does the building; He simply gives us the privilege of helping. It is God who draws men unto Himself (John 6:44) and the Holy Spirit who convicts (John 16:8). God s work is spiritual work, not a human project. It is bloody warfare between God and the enemy, and your spiritual weapons include love, prayer, the gospel, your testimony, God s word, and faith. Keep these perspectives! Ask God daily to renew your mind to His eternal viewpoint (Rom. 12:1-2). What can you and your group do to stay spiritually prepared? Have personal holiness. Love God above all else (Matt. 22:36-40). Keep clean (I John 1:9), humble and submitted (James 4:7-8). Forgive others (Matt. 18:34-35). Be thankful, not anxious (Phil. 4:6-7). Stay in the Word (Psalm 119), worship (Psalm 103), and listen reverently to your Lord (EccI. 5:1-2). Pray. Intercede deeply and daily (Col. 4:3-4), and do warfare (2 Cor. 10:3-5) without ceasing (I Thess. 5:17). Pick prayer partners. God greatly honors the unified prayers of His gathered saints (Matt. 18:18-20). Get at least 5 dedicated prayer partners to begin praying for you and the campaign daily, starting now. Prepare and review. Prepare and have your testimony ready (Rev. 12:11), with a clear gospel included (Col. 4:3-4, 1 Pet. 3:15). Take time now to prepare for the misc., devotionals, and the unexpected. Review any responsibilities you received for the trip, especially if you will be a crew chief or team leader. Practice. Practice giving the gospel clearly. Practice by yourself and with a friend, both with and without the tracts you will use on the trip. Highlight key verses in your Bible. Practice doing servant projects or possibly a home repair job in your hometown prior to coming. Handle logistics now. Pack and make arrangements early so you can keep a spiritual focus in the final week. Love. Without love, all your work means nothing. (1 Cor. 13) Have a servant s heart. Are you going out to serve God, or to get something? Be a servant to men also. 24 Preparing Your Personal Testimony, Part 1 24 Mission work is not complete without telling people about Jesus Christ. You can do all sorts of things to help those who are in need, but not at the neglect of sharing how they can know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. You might not feel bold enough to witness or know exactly what to say, but the simple fact that you have a personal testimony is more than enough. 25 25 Preparing Your Personal Testimony, Part 2 The greatest tool you have to tell others about Jesus is your personal testimony. Everyone has a miracle to tell. You don t have to had to go down the road of drugs, sex, crime or persecution of others to have a miracle story. The simple fact that you are saved by grace is a miracle and your testimony means just as much to the Lord as anyone elses. Now its time to write your own testimony following the model we have in Paul s. Attitudes and actions before I became a Christian basically sharing what your life was like before you met Christ. If appropriate, include family or church background. Avoid naming religious denominations, since this may alienate some of your listeners. Circumstances surrounding my conversion Consider time, date, place, people, motivation, etc. This is a natural place to summarize the gospel: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
