Rally Day will take place It s that time again! September 2018 Dear Saints Who Are Gathered at Peace, As children we use to dare our friends to do difficult or just plain stupid stunts to prove themselves. If the first response was turned down then the stakes were elevated. One would, double dog dare you to do it! To be double dog dared was the ultimate dare. To fail without at least trying meant you were out of the club, so most would take up the challenge. Today, you are playing that game. What is different is instead of being dared to be or do something you are being double dog dared to not be something. The club is made up of a cohort of three; sin, death, and the devil. To be a part of their club you are being double dog dared to not be what you already are, a Lutheran Christian. They are saying, serve yourself or it s your job to fix those who are out of line or we double dog dare you to stay home on Sunday because the Seahawks are playing or be a member but have other responsibilities which are just as important. Responsibilities which make it impossible to be active at church. The big dare for parents is to put more emphasis on extracurricular activities so the children are too busy or tired for God activities. In all the daring and double dog daring, the object is to turn one away from what really matters in life...that being, faith in what the Lord Christ did on the cross for you! And receiving all the fruits and gifts which come with that faith. For example one receiving the benefits lives in peace, has patience, goodness, kindness, wisdom, discernment, faith, strength and walks in love. With these gifted benefits one has the necessities to live and endure whatever life throws at them. The cohort of three double dog dares you to skip the gifts and handle things in your own strength because you don t need help. The reality is, we can t make it on our own. We aren t self-made successes. We need other people. The reality is we have a God who knows our situation and has provided all that is needed to provide for us. But our God doesn t double dog dare us to do or be something, He makes us something! In Christ he makes us His kids and gives us the kingdom. He places us in a position that when we pray we have His ear. As His kids, He walks through this valley of the shadow of death with us. When He is with us we have no fear. AND He gives us a safe place where He restores our souls and sets a table for us before our enemies to show His awesomeness! At His table we are strengthened and encouraged to do what He has ordained for us! No double dog daring to do or be something because in Christ you are already someone awesome! 2 Page 2 The Reason to Serve someone spcial. Continue gathering together to receive the gifts of the Lord Christ. Continue helping and supporting each other. Continue reaching out and thereby bringing the Kingdom of God to those who are being double dog dared to do things on their own. If I may, I double dog dare you to do that! In Christ, Pastor B Dale Brynestad Summer is almost over, school is starting again, even some of the leaves are starting to change color. All of this reminds us of Fall, with Winter right behind. I hope that everyone had a great summer. It is important to relax and take a break from your work. It is also important to reflect on those things that are important in your life and your family s life. As I look at all the good things happening at Peace Lutheran Church and School, I notice that I see a lot of the same individuals serving the Lord. I ask myself, why is this? Where is everyone else? Now I know there are numerous reasons why this is, but it baffles me to understand why. There are many ways to serve the Lord and your Church here at Peace. Boards, Committees, Groups, etc are always looking for new faces. Let s think about how we can show our support, not only to each other, but serve our God. This serving should be something that we should want to do. If this is your case, then talk with someone about joining in. Don t wait for someone to ask you, step up and search out the possibilities. There are plenty of opportunities. Are you good at organizing things? Maybe the Fellowship Committee could use your help. Are you a good teacher? Try being a Sunday School teacher. If you re not sure what you want to do, but realize you want to serve in some capacity, then talk with me, Pastor, or an Elder. I promise you that we will help guide you towards your passion. Remember, this is not a for life position. Wouldn t it be great not to have a Nomination Committee to fill the vacancies on our Boards and Committees? In conclusion, serving our God is our way of showing him and our fellow members of our love for His church in this community. I encourage you to prayerfully consider to get involved in YOUR church. 3 Page 3 God Is With You Virtually Everywhere Nothing replaces the Bible as your source for your faith or going to God in prayer. He has always been there for us, walking beside us, and carrying us when times were at their toughest. There are times when we need a quick prayer, a sermon to rebuild our faith when we are weak, or during our busy work day unable to find the time for God. The digital world has opened up many avenues for learning. You have to still be careful for there are places out there that may misdirect you. Always go to the install screen of an app, select the READ MORE or details area of the app and scroll to the bottom of it. It will tell you where the app originates, who posted it, and give you an idea if it follows LCMS beliefs. If ever in doubt ask the pastor to check it out. Below are some of the apps available out there that can help you on your journey of faith and keep you on the right path. The icon to the left is the one that shows up when you download the app after the name it is listed under. The platform it is available on is listed after the name. 1. Bible a. This app is a great resource for the Bible. The English Standard Version is what our pastor recommends and is available for download so you can access it offline. Another great feature is the audio portion of this which will read the Bible to you. You can also select predefined devotional plans. 2. The Lutheran Hour a. Listen to weekly sermons directly from your mobile device. You have access to the most recent sermons, along with the sermon transcripts. You will learn about The Lutheran Hour program and our long tradition of renowned speakers such as Rev. Gregory P. Seltz and Emeritus, Rev. Kenneth R. Klaus. 3. Portals of Prayer a. Portals of Prayer inspires you to live each day in Jesus name. Each daily devotion speaks Gospel truth through applicable, relatable meditations. Listen to recordings of each day s theme verse, devotion, and prayer. Set notifications to remind you to read at a certain time of day. Search past devotions by keyword, save your favorites, and share prayers with others. 4. The Lutheran Hour devotions a. Each day's message inspires and motivates faithful living through the timeless truths of God's Word. The devotions are written by Rev. Ken Klaus, Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour, and staff and volunteers of Lutheran Hour Ministries across the globe. They are updated daily, and are available as text or audio. 5. LCMS a. This app is a locater for LCMS churches in your area. If you are traveling you can find a local LCMS church to attend. It also delivers worldwide Lutheran news, gives you a daily devotion, and connects you with other Lutherans. A video link is listed to link you to online Videos about multiple areas of our Lutheran faith. 6. Luther s Small Catechism by CPH Has some issues on current IOS a. This is a very nice reference to Luther s Small Catechism. It is nicely designed giving you access to The Ten Commandments, The Creed, The Lord s Prayer, The Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession, The Sacrament of the Alter, Daily Prayers, Table of Duties, and a Christian Q&A. Along with each of these sections are areas within them that describe what each section means to us. Wes Peper, Elder

While the kids get to know their teachers, come learn about the different Bible Studies and activities that Peace Lutheran Church has to offer. 6 Page 6 Well done, good and faithful servant It s September, and everything is in full swing again: back to school and back to church attendance after vacations and weekends away. And since everything is back into full swing, it s a perfect time to get back to basics, back to the foundation. At the end of the first of his chapters on the virtue of faith in Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis provides a helpful reminder, by way of analogy, for the foundation of stewardship. He wrote: Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of your whole life exclusively to His service you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already. So then, when we talk of a man doing anything for God or giving anything to God, I will tell you what it is really like. It is like a small child going to its father and saying, Daddy, give me six pence to buy you a birthday present. Of course, the father does, and he is pleased with the child s present. It is all very nice and proper, but only an idiot would think that the father is six-pence to the good on the transaction. When a man has made these two discoveries God can really get to work. It is after this that real life begins. ( ). This is the first thing we are given to confess about stewardship, and it has to do with ownership. God owns everything, and we are simply managers stewards acting on His behalf. This is true not only of all that we have in this life (Deuteronomy 8:17 18), but also all that we are in this life (1 Corinthians 6:20). The rest flows from here. Since we are stewards, or managers, of what belongs to God, entrusted to make use of it according to His will, there is an expectation of responsibility and accountability. For the Lord said, Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more (Luke 12:48b). And from this comes blessing and reward: Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master (Matthew 25:21). We have everything we need to support this body and life from our God s fatherly divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in us. We have everything we need for our spiritual life also from His merciful hands. On account of the sacrifice of His Son, our Lord Jesus, through the preaching of the gospel and the administration of the sacraments, we have the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and everlasting salvation delivered to us with absolute certainty that it is ours not as stewards but as sons (Galatians 4:1 7). Let us then, as His own sons, press all that He gives to us into the service of His church and to His glory. PAUSE A MOMENT There is no special time for prayer, One can pray 'most anywhere. When things aren't going quite your way, If everything seems to bother you, And nag at you the whole day through. To dispel those awful clouds of gray, If there is not hope in sight, You see the tunnel but not the light. Do not wander, do not stray, When all your efforts seem in vain, You struggle hard but see no gain. Do one thing without delay, When you feel there is no hope, When with life you cannot cope. 7 Page 7 Cherry Cream Cheese Dump Cake Servings: 16 INGREDIENTS 1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent rolls (such as Pillsbury Grands! Big and Flaky) 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 tablespoons brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided 1 (12 ounce) can cherry pie filling 1 (18.5 ounce) package yellow cake mix (such as Duncan Hines ) 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces STEPS Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Spray a 9x13-inch glass baking dish with cooking spray. Unroll crescent rolls into the prepared dish, pinching the seams together. Beat cream cheese, white sugar, and vanilla extract together in a bowl; spread over crescent roll dough. Sprinkle brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon over cream cheese mixture layer. Pour cherry pie filling over brown sugar layer. Sprinkle yellow cake mix over cherry pie filling. Arrange butter slices over cake mix and top with remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Wrap a piece of aluminum foil under baking dish to help prevent rolls from burning. Bake in the preheated oven until cooked through, about 1 hour. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Peace s PreK It s that time again! Peace school staff has returned and we are blessed by those we serve with to make a PLS school year great. God s timing is perfect in filling our needs here, and teachers are just as excited as the children who will soon fill our hallways and classrooms. I want to thank you for my opportunity as the PreKindergarten teacher giving Christ s love away and serving children who need to grow in Kingdom purpose.
