2 Dear Friends in Christ, Ponder this, I will never leave you nor forsake you. Therefore, we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me? Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be led astray by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to strengthened by grace This text is from Hebrews 13 and applies to us today. On October 31 st the church celebrated the Reformation. The Reformation was the movement within the church that brought the church back to its roots. The roots being Scripture and the proper understanding of the church. At the time of the Reformation, church was a requirement thrust on the people. The service was in Latin, which is fine if one understands Latin. The problem in Germany and many other parts of the kingdom was the people did not understand Latin. Other frustrations felt were indulgences (where one could buy forgiveness outside of Christ), teachings on purgatory (a holding place where a soul went until its sins were purged before obtaining heaven), the authority of the Pope (having the power to forgive sins outside of Christ), devotion to the Virgin Mary (her Immaculate Conception born without sin, her perpetual virginity, her immediate assumption into heaven), merits of the saints (saints who died having access to good works which could be applied to whomever), and church which was a requirement to please God. These teachings may have begun in innocent ways and circumstances but as the church grew in strength and power, they became a burden placed on the people. If one returns to the book of Exodus, we see God s true intensions. In Exodus 25 God says, And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. In verse 22 He says, There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat I will speak with you about all that I will give you In Exodus 29 God, speaking of the tabernacle, says, There I will meet with the people of Israel, and it shall be sanctified by my glory. I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the Lord their God. So what does this mean for us today? God has not changed. He is the same yesterday (as in the book of Exodus), today, and forever. He chooses to meet with His people in the same manner in the place of His choosing. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you. (Ex 20:24). With Israel, it was the tent of meeting or the tabernacle. When Israel conquered the Promised Land, God had them build the temple in the city of His choosing, in Jerusalem. Today God works in the same way. He causes His name to be remembered where His Word and His sacraments (baptism/communion) are located in the church. In word and sacrament, He comes and blesses! He does not come and condemn! This is His promise! The church is His place of choosing to build up, heal, forgive, restore, wash, feed, and bless His people. It was that way in the beginning and it is still His method of blessing His people! The Reformers brought this truth back to the church and it remains with us today. Therefore, we continue to remember and praise God for His grace and mercy to and for us as we gather in the place of God s choosing the church! In Christ, Pastor Brynestad

3 Sufficient Grace Well, the harvest reports are starting to come in for the year. While it s still too early to tell, the results are looking like it will turn out to be a pretty good year. Even when we thought we were getting too much rain and temperatures were less than optimal, the Lord provided sufficient growing conditions to produce a bountiful harvest. No matter how much we try to influence these results, in the end we have to place our trust in the Lord that He will provide what is necessary for the harvest. The same applies to us as the church. As Christians, we certainly face our fair share of trials and tribulations. But no matter how bad things get, we know that the Lord of the harvest will provide for us. It may not be what we think is best, however, God will give us what is necessary for the purpose that he has in store for us. For God says, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, (2Cor 12:9). Again he says, The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me, (Psalm 138:8). So this Thanksgiving count the blessings the Lord has given you. Remember the fact that he chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (John 15:16). Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever, (Psalm 136:1). All the world is God s own field, Fruit unto His praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear. Lord of harvest, grant that we Whole-some grain and pure may be. (Henry Alford, TLH 574) A LOVE LETTER FROM JESUS I had to send this letter to say how much I love you, I saw You yesterday as you were walking with your friends. I waited all day, hoping you would walk and talk with me----- As evening drew near, I gave you a sunset to close your day and a cool breeze to rest you. Then I waited, but you never came. In your fitful sleep I longed to touch your brow, so I spilled moonlight upon your pillow and your face. I have so many gifts for you. You awakened late this morning and rushed off without a word. My tears were in the rain. You looked so sad, and so alone. It makes my heart ache because I understand. My friends let me down and hurt me many times. I do love you. I try to tell you in the quiet green grass I whisper it in the leaves and trees, and breathe it in the color of the flowers. I shout it in the mountain streams, and give the birds love songs to sing. My love for you is deeper than the oceans and bigger than the biggest want you will ever have. We will spend eternity together, but for now, I know this earth is hard. I was there and want to help you. Just call on me and talk to me. I have chosen you, and I will wait. Your friend, Jesus A Bible study is held at Nancy Van Buskirk every Thursday at 7:00 pm. The study led by Dale Samuels is on the second haft of Believe by Randy Frazee. The series starts with a short video, reading out loud, then discussion time and a social time with coffee and dessert. The studies are all different. Call for more information or me at nancyleevb@q.com.

4 Hospice Mazatlan, I.A.P. The hospice/palliative care model is a relatively new practice in Mexico. There are currently four hospices in the country: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Mazatlan. Hospice Mazatlan is the only hospice that is independent of a hospital and, over time, has proved to be the only sustainable independent hospice in the country. Hospice Mazatlan I.A.P., founded ten years ago, is a non-profit agency which is licensed with the Mexican government. We also have non-profit status in the US and a tax ID number. We are subject to annual audits/surveys of our financial records and processes of providing care to the terminally ill in the community of Mazatlan. Unlike the US, hospice care is not considered a health care benefit. Payment for services is on a sliding scale based on family income and expenses. We receive grants, monetary gifts, in-kind donations, and hold three major fund raising events each year to continue to be able to provide this care to the community. No one is denied hospice services based on ability to pay or nationality. With the large number of ex-pats living in Mazatlan, we frequently serve both US and Canadian citizens. For the past four years, while in Mazatlan, I ve provided hospice and palliative care nursing education with the staff on a twice weekly basis. This is both theoretical and case review of actual patients. In May of 2017 I was asked to join the Board of Directors. This board functions as do boards in the United States. We review the budget, expenses, sources of revenue, and over-all operations of the agency. We also are very active participants in the major fund raising events which are: a golf tournament in January, a dinner-dance with a silent auction in February, and a 10K race in April. My role changed to Director of Clinical Services in March Our founder and previous director, Lois Croly, retired. My day to day and week to week routine with hospice has increased. This is a strictly volunteer position. My role now also includes representing Hospice Mazatlan at community events both in Mazatlan and in the states. This past season I revised all the nursing forms (they still use paper!), reviewed/revised policies and procedures, recruited my neighbors to volunteer, and in general partnered with my Mexican friends to educate the community and increase the awareness of the benefit of the hospice care model. This includes meeting and educating nurses in leadership roles in the local hospitals who can in turn educate their staff. I also glean discarded, yet perfectly useable, medical supplies and take them to Mazatlan. The staffing model of Hospice Mazatlan looks very similar to the staff you d expect to find at any hospice agency in the states. Our doctor visits each newly admitted patient, monitors the patient s status and is available for telephone consultation with our staff. We have two full time nurses and two per-diem nurses who assist as needed. Our social worker is very involved in community resources and support for patients and families. Our director of operations has secured numerous grants to assist with our budgetary needs and monitors the day to day operations of the agency. Our board consists of both Mexican and American men and women. We have a large group of American and Canadian volunteers who help with our major fund raising events. One volunteer comes to the office weekly to coach the staff in English. Another volunteer assists me with translating written documents into Spanish. Another volunteer helps with respite with our families. Many of my neighbors and friends who visit Mazatlan volunteer at the office by organizing the medical supply room, repairing and/or evaluating equipment for usability, cleaning returned equipment, collating admission packets, organizing food bags for the poorest of the poor families on service, yard work, and building storage closets. How the hospice team looks different is that there are no home health aides, chaplains, and complementary therapies. Culturally, we do have our differences.

5 Sharing the Good News of Jesus to the World Sometimes people don t like it when pastors talk about stewardship. For some, it hits too close to home. It is easier to talk about bad people in Washington, in history, or overseas than it is to think about what our daily life in Christ is supposed to look like how we are supposed to love our neighbor. The fact that we don t like hearing about stewardship certainly means we ought to face it. Here are a few simple and practical realities. God calls us to first-fruits, sacrificial giving. This means we should give off the top. We should set a percentage of our income as a deliberate gift for the work of the Church and give that first. We write the check to the Lord s work in the Church before we pay the mortgage or pay for our medicine or pay for anything else. We don t pay for all the stuff we need, and think we need, and then give from what is left over. That is the first-fruits idea. It is hard because we think we need all sorts of other things first. But that is the point of sacrificial. Next, how could the starting point for Christian generosity and sacrifice really be anything less than a tithe 10 percent? The ceremonial law of the Old Testament was never arbitrary. In the Old Testament, the Levites received this tithe so they could be full-time ministers. Does the New Testament have a ministry that is larger or smaller? It is far larger: Make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:19). And we are still to have a full-time ministry: The Lord has commanded that those who preach the Gospel should make their living from the Gospel (1 Cor. 9:14). So, if 10 percent was needed in the Old Testament, and we have a bigger mission need in the New Testament, how can we expect the Lord s work to be done on less than a tithe? First-fruits, sacrificial, generous giving that s the way. We shouldn t fool ourselves into thinking that we ve out-given God s goodness or that we ve given plenty. We might be tempted to think so but consider no one in the Church has given plenty because no one has given all. No one has died for his sins. Only the sinless Son of God did that. Or, as St. Paul said, bringing the Good News of Jesus into the discussion of our giving to support the Lord s work in the Church: I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich (2 Cor. 8:8-9). As you can see, what the Bible commands about our stewardship can sting. It s law, and the law shows our sins. It calls us to repentance. The law is meant to expose and accuse for the sake of showing us Christ and His fulfillment of the law. If first-fruits, sacrificial giving has you squirming, that s the point. In Mark s account of the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus took the disciples five loaves and two fish and blessed them. It was nothing among so many, but, of course, it was plenty. Jesus makes something from nothing. Mark doesn t say that all the disciples gave Jesus all the bread they had. It is quite possible some of them held something back. But even if they did, that didn t stop Jesus from blessing them. Jesus makes something out of nothing. He, who fed His people in the desert with Manna every morning, doesn t need their bread. But they need to give it. And what they give, however little it might be, however grudgingly they do so, He blesses it. He not only blesses those whom He feeds with it, but He blesses them, the givers not just in that they wind up with (a basket full for each loaf) but that they learned to trust and rejoice in Him. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. The Lord gives abundantly or asks us to fast. We do not know what will happen. Blessed be the Name of the Lord. He does all things well and works all things together for good. The disciples don t give their bread to Jesus because it is a good investment. They give it because He is good, they love Him, and they trust Him. Let us go and do likewise.

7 Humor of the Day A.A.A.D.D. Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how is manifests itself: I decide to wash my car. As I start toward to the garage, I notice that there is mail on the hall table. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice that the trash can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first, but then I think that since I m going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking. I m going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don t accidentally knock it over. I see that the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye they need to be watered. I set the Coke down on the counter and I discover my reading glasses that I ve been searching for all morning. I decide I d better put them back on my desk, but first I m going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water, and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight, when we go to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remember that it s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I ll water the flowers. I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day; the car isn t washed, the bills aren t paid, there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter, the flowers aren t watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can t find the remote, I can t find my glasses, and I don t remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I m really baffled because I know I was busy all day long and I m really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I ll try to get some help for it, but first I ll check my . Do me a favor, will you?
