Back Amazing Convention! NWI DISTRICT PRESIDENT BECKY HALTAUFDERHEID ALGOMA, WI Judy Pelot and Deb Schalow hat an W amazing and inspiring convention we had in Stevens Point. Thank you to Deb Schalow, Judy Pelot and the convention planning committee for all their hard work in planning the 37th biennial convention and commemorating the 75th Anniversary of NWD LWML. We had so much fun celebrating at the banquet Monday evening and sporting our vintage hats, gloves and dresses. There were many different styles, colors and shapes, many of which I remember my mother and grandmother wearing when they went to church. The Benson Family entertained us and proclaimed the Gospel message through their music and humor. What a treat this was! There were servant events and Gifts of the Heart were gathered on Sunday. The YWRs assisted in sorting and packing them. We were inspired Sunday night during the worship service led by host pastor, Rev. Douglas Schalow and by preacher, Senior Pastoral Counselor Steve Pockat. Monday morning began with singing led by Wendysue Fluegge who served as our amazing song leader. 2 Amazing Convention! (continued) Michelle DeRusha led us in Bible Study entitled "Remember All His Benefits." We learned how we can be distracted and not see God's blessings in our daily lives. By stopping and reflecting on our lives we can see all the blessings God has given us, even in times of suffering. Mission speakers, Rev. Bob and Sue Pfeil inspired us as they spoke about their years as missionaries in Kyrgyzstan where Pastor Pfeil served as the Theological Educator and Sue served as a registered nurse helping to set up and train medical teams to work in the mobile medical van. Delegates approved a $107,000 Mission Grant Goal and chose nine Mission Grants to be funded for this biennium. New officers were elected. I'm humbled and feel a bit like Moses, but am honored to be given this opportunity to serve you. A huge thank-you to Mary Harrington for her diligent and faithful leadership these four years. She was and will continue to be a 2 blessing to all of us. We welcome Sharon Hanke as Second Vice-President, Jody Cook as Treasurer, (Becky Haltaufderheid as President) and Rev. Douglas Reinders as Pastoral Counselor. Many thanks to Mary Scharenbrock, Deb Schalow and Pastor Pockat for their faithful service to the LWML these past four years. The Mission walk was organized by our very own energetic Betty Snyder and led by our YWRs who took us around the Holiday Inn and Convention Center. Thank-you Betty! We were blessed to have President Patti Ross with us to report on all the activities and the Mission Grant status for the National LWML. So far, $818,250 has been paid to various Mission Grants, but we still have $744,000 that still remains to be paid for this biennium which will end in March of Mission Tidings Summer 2018

37th Biennial Convention North Wisconsin District LWML Keynote speaker Jan Struck inspired us in her humorous way. She reflected on the book, "In the Dust of the Rabbi" and the disciples leaving all they had to be just like Jesus, the Rabbi. She reminded us that we, women in mission, want to make our walk with God our number one priority in our daily lives. We want to be like Jesus to everyone we meet. Three offerings were taken. The first was designated for the NWD LWML mite goal and totaled $3,377.02; the second was designated to support the mission work in Kazakhstan by David and Rachel Baker and totaled $3,080.52; the third was designated for Peace Campus Center at the University of Wisconsin in Stevens Point for $2, and the money raised for the mission walk totaled $4, All praise to God for these gifts from hearts around NWD! In the coming weeks new board members will be appointed to join us. May we all together continue to be a bouquet of blessings to all we meet. Blessed to serve, Becky Haltaufderheid NWD President President Mary Harrington opened the convention with the lighting of the convention candle by Katie Paholke. Past District Presidents led the League Pledge. The Christian Life devotion showed us the many, many hats we wear that will be replaced with a golden crown. Serve the Lord with (B)Oldness. Fun at the President s reception with President Patti Ross, Mary Harrington and a group of OWRs from Faith Lutheran who served the event. Summer 2018 Mission Tidings 3

Convention Mites for Mission Walk O ver $4,000 was raised in the Mission Walk planned and hosted by Betty Snyder! What a wonderful contribution to the mission mite goal. Thank you, Betty, for your energetic leadership of this event. There are a few T-shirts from the walk that Betty Snyder would like to sell. They are sizes 2x and 3x for $5.00 each. If they sell, that money could go to the total for the walk. A BIG THANK YOU to all who participated and give PRAISE TO GOD for His goodness! Betty Snyder The Benson Family Singers provided entertainment after the wonderful banquet celebrating NWD 75th anniversary. Many women enjoyed wearing vintage hats and clothing, plus having gloves and purses to celebrate. Pastors Roegner and Pfeil ready for the banquet! Missionaries wear many hats!! Continue Collecting Postage Stamps! Y es, we re still saving and selling cancelled postage stamps. Please trim stamps to 1/4 border of the envelope around the stamp - no less. We can sell Christmas stamps now, but not the bulk rate stamps; commemorative stamps are the best. Foreign stamps are okay, too. Bring the trimmed stamps to the rally and your zone president will take them to the District Board meeting. From there, we have someone willing to take them to sell. The market is not as strong as in years past, so it is important that stamps be trimmed and ready to sell. Since 1995, $13, has been sent to support mission projects from the sale of cancelled stamps! Summer 2018 Mission Tidings 5

MISSION GRANTS DIRECTOR LINDA KOELLER COMBINED LOCKS, WI A HUGE Bouquet of Blessings raise be to God for His P generous Bouquet of Blessings through our mites! 8 Time to Grow SENIOR PASTORAL COUNSELOR REV. STEVEN POCKAT SHAWANO, WI ou may have noticed that Y the church colors during the Sundays of Pentecost are green. The Holy Spirit has been poured out upon the Church, you and me, and growth occurs. St. Paul writes in Ephesians 4:15-16 "speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." At the Convention in Stevens Point new leaders are elected to lead the LWML, spirits are refreshed and excited and God gives growth "as each part of the LWML does its work." It happens because of the One who gives life, the Head of His church, Christ our Lord. The LWML is a unique part of the body of Christ, and it is a beautiful sight to see the ladies all working together to serve the Lord. Celebrating 75 years by God s grace, the LWML is beautiful, vibrant, and alive in Christ. Grow in grace, grow in faith, grow in the fruits of the Spirit. II Thessalonians 1:3 "we thank God for you... because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing." Continue in Gods' grace and grow in Christ. Rev. Steven Pockat Senior LWML Counselor Reading through the Bible CHRISTIAN LIFE DAWN VIA CLAYTON, WI ow often do you read the H Bible? Daily, weekly, have you already read through the entire Bible? I know people who have read through the Bible multiple times and they say they always learn something new. I also know people who have never read through the entire Bible, but are always reading passages and doing Bible studies. Is there a right or wrong way to read the Bible? Absolutely not! If you are in the Word, however you choose at whatever pace will be the right way for you. I would suggest using a Bible version that is easy to read and understand (I know for a fact the King James Version is not for me) although King James is what my father chooses to use. Did you know that you do not have to start with Genesis 1:1? You simply can pick a book and work your way through. You could take notes or start journaling as you go. I know doodling helps me. Remember to ask yourself two questions as you go through the Bible: 1. What does this teach you about God? and 2. How does this teach you to live? With the internet so easily accessible now days you can find any number of books to help you in your journey to reading the Bible. Whether it is a coloring book Bible, comic book Bible or a book to help you learn how to Bible journal; whatever sparks that fire inside you to dig into the Word, do it. For example, I have a picture Bible that my Grandmother gave me thirteen years ago that I still look through. I also have a coloring book Bible (you are never to old to color) and it s a fun way to be in the Word. You will also find a lot of Bible studies, devotions and leader helps on Happy reading, Dawn Via Christian Life Committee 8 Mission Tidings Summer 2018

Correspondence to Veterans he ladies of Peace Lutheran Church, Arbor T Vitae, Wisconsin have symptoms of writers cramps, but that is overpowered by the giant symptoms of a happy heart and comforted soul. We've written and distributed over 2000 Christmas cards to veterans rehabilitation facilities and hospitals throughout Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. During the year we write out nearly another 1500 thank you cards acknowledging their bravery and commitment. We have 19 target distribution points throughout the state, such as American Legion Christmas Peace Lutheran Church Arbor Vitae, WI Zone 5 parties, Veterans Day ceremonies in schools and communities and nursing homes where veterans are living. All cards are distributed by our members so no funds are spent for shipping. We have gotten many very nice thank you cards back from veterans expressing their happiness to be recognized for their service in our United States military. We feel they need to be thanked every day not only on Veterans Day. We would not have our freedom of religion if it had not been for their dedication, sacrifice and loyalty to our country. Zone 3 President Zernicke Passes Torch to Zernicke Mother and daughter serving the Lord with Gladness! Kelsey Zernicke - new zone 3 president and outgoing zone 3 president Christine Zernicke! Convention Zone 11 Jackie Strassburg, Zone 11 President Wausau, WI one 11 convention banner was designed and made by JoAnn Z Koehler and Yvonne Weege from St. Peter LWML. 11 Young at Heart Retreat YWR CO-LEADERS LAURA PALZKILL, DENISE FALL, LISA GLESSING Along with hearing about gratitude, the women made gratitude boxes and a flower hand where they wrote down things for which they were grateful. he Young at T Heart Retreat was held on April 7, 2018, at Camp Luther with 56 wonderful women in attendance. The women had the opportunity to listen to Linda Rinne talk about gratitude and how it affects our physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. Linda has served in many missions in Central Europe over the years. She currently lives in Appleton where she is enjoying more time with her grandchildren following their mission work abroad. The women also explored how gratefulness can enrich our lives as well as our relationships with God and other people. YWR Co-Leaders Denise, Lisa and Laura welcomed the participants, explained projects, presented skits and led the event. Some of the ingathering items we received for Camp Luther from our Young at Heart Retreat: $153 towards Outdoor Ministry Fund 28 packs of chalk 17 cans of shaving cream 2 clipboards 1 pack of glue sticks 29 rolls of duck tape 73 sharpies We are looking for YWRs for the 2019 national convention. Any woman between the ages of may apply. We are also looking for any suggestions for the next Young at Heart Retreat next spring. These were then folded with the white side out to look like Easter lilies. All had fun and enjoyed the fellowship with the other ladies both at the overnight and during the day.
