Do you ever think to yourself I wish I had more time? Or Where has time gone? Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. Time can take on a different meaning for each person. Christmas is a time to take in children s programs and hear them sing and share the Good News about our Lord and Savior s birth. Verse two of Ecclesiastes 3 reads, A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted. We are in the midst of winter and cold weather; then comes spring a time to plant and watch God s love grow and a time when Jesus suffered, died, and rose again for our salvation. Verse eight says, A time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. With war among us, we pray for peace, for branches of the military who give their time willingly to keep us safe, and for our missionaries that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide them and bring non-believers to know Christ as their Savior. As we begin a New Year, what will you do with your time? Here are some ideas... * Mentor another woman * Encourage a pastor to attend one of your rallies * Attend the spring Young Women / Young at Heart Retreat or the Fall LWML (Lutheran Women s Missionary League) Retreat * Lead a Bible Study or attend one * Invite someone to an LWML meeting Whatever you decide to do with your time, continue to grow in the knowledge of The Word and be willing servants of the Lord! May the new year bring peace and blessings to each and every one of you! 3 A fter attending the district LWML convention in Green Bay, it is easy to get excited about attending the national convention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in June of 27! After all, there were hundreds of women in Green Bay, all singing and praying as we focused on the mission task given to us by our Lord and Savior. When the theme of the convention was announced ROCK (REST ON CHRIST THE KING) immediately a song from my teenage years came to mind, Rock My Soul. When I was a teen, Peter, Paul, and Mary performed this song in concert with audience participation. As I thought about this song, I also thought that it would be interesting if this rock was the same rock as the Rock of Ages I never think of just one song! When I got home, I used the Internet to research my teenage memory. In just a few minutes, I had not only the information I remembered about a folk song, but also the chorus and lyrics to the spiritual Rock O My Soul. I discovered that this hymn was first sung during the time of the Underground Railroad, the system the abolitionists used to help slaves escape to freedom. The slaves using the Underground Railroad were hopeful and prayerful about a land that promised freedom. That sure made me think of the women with whom I had just shared a wonderful experience of hope and prayer as we considered the mission work of the LWML. When we Christians REST ON CHRIST OUR KING, we are looking forward to the promised land that Jesus spoke about as His kingdom; we are promised an eternity with Christ, an eternity bought by His precious blood shed on the cross for us. So the ROCK OF MY SOUL is the same ROCK as the ROCK OF AGES and the same ROCK who the women of the LWML will meet at Sioux Falls! What a comfort to know that we can REST ON CHRIST OUR KING! I m not sure, but I think Jesus has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil. Wouldn t it sound a bit strange to hear someone say that? We re used to listing all the wondrous things God has done for us and then saying, This is most certainly true, not I m not sure, but I think so. And the difference between the two responses shows up not merely in how we memorize things, but in how we live. Do we really live as if the creed were most certainly true? Is it really possible that people are enslaved to sin, death and hell, and that our proclamation might be the way in which God sets them free? If we aren t sure, then of course our missionary efforts will be cautious, tepid, and exploratory. But if we are sure, then our missionary efforts will be bold, relentless, and forceful. So in a way, our dedication to evangelism illustrates the difference between This is most certainly true and I m not sure, but I think The LWML played a big role in my first call out of seminary. I was a missionary-at-large starting a new congregation. The LWML gave us several grants. The money came from some committee of the LWML, but where they got it mite boxes most likely, but how many people contributed? I never knew. But more than having operating funds, it made a big difference to be part of a synod with so many anonymous donors, so many people dedicated to spreading the Word, so many people being bold, relentless, and forceful about mission work. Sure, they might not be standing on street-corners with signs or cold-calling strangers (but they might have been, who knows?) so it not might have seemed very bold, but it was. It showed a willingness to do what can be done, big or small. As the new junior counselor for LWML of the NWD (North Wisconsin District), I admit that there are many things I m not sure about. A lot of this is new to me, so I m banking on your patience and willingness to help me figure out my role as we go along. But what I am sure about is the pure Gospel, the LCMS s mission, and the LWML s critical role both in raising the funds for it and in giving people outlets to live their faith, to have something to do or somewhere to go with the faith that says, This is most certainly true. Yours in Christ, Pastor Peter Speckhard Junior Pastoral Counselor In Christ s Love, Jan Hahn Christian Life Assistant CHRISTIAN LIFE The annual Christian Life Workshop was held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Wausau on November 5 & 6, 26. In attendance were 3 zone Christian Life chairmen, three zone presidents, and Kim Zastrow, our district president. Rev. Daniel Thews, pastor of Faith Lutheran, Appleton, presented the spring rally Bible study topic: Don't Worry, Be Happy! Rev. Michael Scholz, pastor of Luther Memorial, River Falls, presented the fall rally Bible study topic: There is Help in the Hills. The attendees participated in dramas for each topic, two pianists enhanced our singing, and everyone shared a special treat for our amazing grazing table! The ladies are enthused to present these relevant Bible studies at the 27 rallies. ~ Arlene Kerstner Christian Life Chairman 3

5 The Times They Are A Changing! Ladies we are growing old. More silver threads abound than gold. And we re set in all our ways Stuck on our one meeting day. We mark the dates of what will be Never look around to see If perhaps there is a need For someone new to plant a seed. We ve been faithful to the Lord, Walking as with one accord To grow in knowledge, grace, and love, Moving toward our home above. Mission education, inspiration too, Projects paid by mites saved by each of you. This is how it has been done, Will we cease when changes come? Oh, we feel the time go by And we look around and cry, Come, young ladies, hear us sigh We don t want our League to die! Just remember when we meet, Don t say change or take my seat. Roberts Rules must reign supreme And we must vote on everything! Yes, the times are a changing, but the call from Psalm 1:2 to Serve the Lord With Gladness will continue to be the strength of the Lutheran Women s Missionary League! ~Sue Ebert Zone 13 Leader Development Hey girl! Listen; hear the new beat, I just came back from a great retreat! We studied the Word and praised the Lord! There was sharing and laughs and crafts galore I m really pumped up because there s more, These Ladies in Mission really know the score! It s nothing like the old ones meeting here, Who seem to be caught in their own little sphere As they plant the flowers round the church sign, Make church suppers and quilt sometimes. I d like to grow in my walk with the Lord And make a difference as time will afford There s a mission Quarterly that s neat With Bible studies to keep things up-beat. This LWML, while not really new, Is there for us if we just follow through. We ll give our loose change, they call it mites Go to conventions for mission insights. It just goes on as there s much more to do, I ll call Sally, you call Mary Lou! We ll bring our little ones along And work together while pre-school is on! You find out how to make those kits, Then we ll exercise to keep nice and fit! The Bible study will help us to grow, Our Loving Lord better to know! Our time won t be long so we can t waste a minute But it will be special if we keep God in it! LEADER DEVELOPMENT The silly verses above are both valid! Serving the Lord With Gladness is what we do in the LWML! The traditional programs & meetings have been a foundation of growth and strength for the League. When the LWML began, these concepts that seem somewhat stagnant now, were very non-traditional to the activities of women in the church at that time. As we seek to serve today in again a much different setting the LWML will move forward to involve the women of the church through Human Care, Mite Grants, personal growth in Christ always striving to assist each woman to be all God has called her to be! As change continues, the traditional society can step up to the challenge by being a source of communication between young women s activities and the zone, district, and national LWML. Younger women have indicated that they prefer to cut to the chase and come together for a purpose, do it, and move on. We older societies have already established an information network; we can share with the younger women & their groups through the bulletin, mail boxes, a monthly newsletter, even ! We may be able to offer babysitting or perhaps keep an area of the church clean and stocked with toys so little ones can play while moms meet. We recognize our limitations increasing, but it is no different for the younger gals who want to see their kids ball games, keep their jobs, and still be a part of their church family. Though old-fashioned church suppers may soon be replaced by catered events, we remember that it s not the homemade, but the fellowship that makes it good anyway! And someday when our young women become empty-nesters, they just may become the next generation of quilters! 6 FAITH IN ACTION Project Linus was not only the topic at the 26 fall rally of Zone 13, it was also the recipient of these beautiful quilt donations! The quilts were brought as surprise donations as an idea of Pat Falk, Zone 13 president. Jill Draves (second from right) was the guest speaker on behalf of Project Linus. At the August 26 Mission Circle Guest Night at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bonduel, Mike Buchholz, Blake Artis, & Matthew Reep gave a PowerPoint presentation describing their experience after being accepted to participate in IMPACT Leadership Camp. The Mission Circle was one of several St. Paul organizations that contributed to fully cover the cost for four of St. Paul s youth to attend the Leadership Camp at Camp Luther. Not able to attend that evening was Chantelle Panske, also a member of St. Paul. These ladies from Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Greenville (Zone 18) keep busy with many projects. Proceeds of this project benefit the operating budget of LCMS World Missions. When you save your postmarked stamps and bring them to rallies & conventions, one faithful Delores Westphal, a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church (Town of Washington) Bonduel, cuts & trims them all! 7 T he YWR committee has been busy this fall planning the annual Young Women and Young at Heart Retreat; this year we are expanding the retreat to a full weekend at Camp Luther! We are blessed in the North Wisconsin District to have such a wonderful retreat setting and the committee is excited to present Hooked by Jesus. You will find the registration form on the lower portion of this page with all of the information you will need. At the time this issue was going to press, Gifts of the Heart details had not been finalized so please look for more information on that in the retreat brochure and flyer at your church. Applications were received this past fall for the Young Women Representatives (YWR) to the National LWML Convention in Sioux Falls, SD. This has been so exciting for me to be a part of this year; for one reason, I have such fond memories of my experience as the YWR for the North Wisconsin District in Oklahoma City and am thankful for the doors of ministry God has opened for me through that opportunity. Second, as a result of my involvement in the national LWML Leader Development Committee during this biennium I am now helping to train the YWRs who will represent the 4 districts at the national convention! Please pray for both the Nominating Committee and the Executive Board meeting in February when we will be choosing the young women who will represent our North Wisconsin District!
