2 GRADE 3W WINNERS OF THE OCTOBER FETE DONATION Congratulations to our school community for another amazing effort to support our School Fete. As mentioned last week, October was "Bring a Lucky Dip prize". We collected over 800 items for the Lucky Dip stall. Thank you again and well done to all the classes. Last Friday, 3W had their hot chip lunch as the prize for collecting the most number of Lucky Dip Prizes. A reminder that another special lunch is the reward this month for the class that brings the most number of jars or plastic containers filled with fun items. SPORTING SUCCESS We congratulate Frankie P. (Year 6) who finished in 2nd place at the Regional Golf Championships last Friday in a very competitive situation. This wonderful result means that Frankie has qualified for the State Final at Kooringal Golf Course (Altona) on the 2nd December. A great achievement! On behalf of our community we wish him every success. 2

3 One of our School Captains, Olivia N. will be representing Victoria in the 2015 Pacific School Game (PSG) in Adelaide next week. Her campaign involves her competing in 13 swimming events, nine individual and four relays. Unfortunately, she won't be able to lead Roberts at our school sports on Friday as she will be flying out with the TeamVic. to Adelaide. Olivia has been a great competitor representing St John's at state level and competing for Victoria over many years. We are very proud of her achievements over a long period of time and we wish her a very successful competition next week. Swimming will be live streamed on Saturday November 21 st. School Sport Australia Link: Pacific School Games Link: THE WINNER OF THE DESIGN OUR FETE ARTWORK COMPETITION A special thank you to all the students that submitted their beautiful artwork for this special competition. There were over 60 students that put in a great deal of effort to create the perfect design and theme for our upcoming School Fete. The task of choosing only one winner was a very difficult one. The Fete Advertising subcommittee short-listed the entries down to three finalists that they believed best conveyed the energy, excitement and information required to promote our fete to our students, our school families and the Heidelberg community. From these, the School Fete Committee collectively voted on a winner: Congratulations to Annabel B (Year 3P), who is the winner of our Fete Artwork Competition. Annabel's impressive work will be used on all Fete promotional materials including Real Estate Community boards, posters, flyers, postcards and more. Shown below is just a small sample of the designs submitted the calibre of the work was very impressive and all children should all be very proud of their efforts! 3

St. Vincent De Paul Annual Christmas Toy Appeal You are again invited to contribute to the St. Vincent De Paul (St.Vinnies) Christmas Toy Appeal which St. John's School supports each year. Your response to this appeal last year was excellent as it always is. Members of the local conference of St. Vincent de Paul will distribute the donated toys to needy children in the area. If your family would like to contribute to the appeal you are asked to purchase a gift for a child (gifts for teenagers and adults are also welcomed) and leave it with your child s teacher up to Monday December 14th. Please wrap the gift and label it, for example, Boy age 5, girl age 13. Class Masses Term 4 (9.15a.m.) Week 8 Tuesday November 24th Years 4C and 4F Week 9 Thursday November 26th Years PN and PV These mass dates and times are correct at time of publication. Sometimes unforeseen circumstances occur to change these dates/times. Memorial Book Especially through the month of November, Catholic Christians offer prayers to remember the dead and to thank God for their lives. You are invited to write the names of loved ones who have died in the Memorial Book, which is in the school foyer. The children will pray for those named throughout November during their class prayer times. Can you help? I have received a request from Vincent Chung (St Vincent de Paul, Heidelberg Conference) asking for assistance from families to sell Christmas cards after each of the weekend masses starting six weeks prior to Christmas. This would involve setting up a small table and placing packets of cards on display at the front of the church 2 minutes before the end of mass and selling cards and Columban calendars for 5-10 minutes or until no further sales are judged to be realised. If you feel your family could help the parish community in this way please complete the form below and return it to school as soon as possible. Thank you. 5

12 Father Mario s Sermon 15 November 2015 (33 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B) Daniel 12:1-3; Psalm 15:5,8-11; Hebrews 10:11-14,18; Mark 13: The Son of Man is coming with power and glory! As we continue celebrating the month of November, with its special connection with our beloved sisters and brothers who have gone before us, and as we approach the end of another liturgical Church year next week, our thoughts inevitably turn to the end times. The Lord is coming! The Lord is here! Maranatha! Making use of imagery from the books of the prophets Isaiah, Joel and Daniel, the gospel according to Mark speaks of a time when the world order as we know it today will no longer exist: the sun, the moon and the stars will no longer give light and will fall from the sky. The authors of the book of Genesis speak of a God who creates and gives light and life; today s gospel passage reverses creation, the light created in Genesis is now turned off. Although this sounds very similar to what scientist tell us will eventually happen to our sun and the universe, the gospel of Mark is following a different logic. The aim of our Christian life is to become disciples of Christ; to familiarise ourselves with God s will and open our lives through faith in order to respond to God s call to enter into a deep relationship with him. At the end of this journey we will then come to meet God face to face. When the time comes the world as we have built it around ourselves, the world as we experience it today, will collapse around us, so that we would be able to see God face to face. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul tells us that now we see things in a reflection, as in a mirror. (1Co 13:12) The world and the environment we have constructed around allow us only to see a dim reflection of God; this is enough for now. But we look forward in hope to the moment when we can experience the fullness of God s glory. The style of literature we read in the book of Daniel and in this passage from the gospel according Mark are called Apocalyptic. We often tend to associate this style of literature with end of the world prophecies; many of us tend to read these texts with fear and trepidation. The term apocalyptic or revelation actually refer to a type of literature whose message is to remove the veil in order to show us what is being hidden from us. In the book of Genesis God created the universe for us to live in; he also created us in his own image and likeness. The whole of creation is in the image and likeness of God. All that is, all that has being, is in the image of God whose name is I am who am, being itself! God reveals himself to humanity through all of creation so that all humanity can come to know, love and acknowledge God. At the end of days, when our journey here on earth is finished, we will no longer need creation to talk to us about God. At the end of days if we hang on to the creation as we know it now, instead of leading us to God it will become an interference. When the time comes creation will need to be put aside so that we can see the fullness of God. This is the message Mark is giving us today. Often people ask when will all this happen? When will the end of days come? Each one of us will see the Son of Man coming in power and glory when we breathe our last breath and are welcomed into God s presence as we pray in our funeral liturgies: Saints of God, come to her aid! Come to meet her, angels of the Lord! Receive her soul and present her to God the most high. For us death is the moment when the sun loses its light so that we may enter into the presence the real light. Our job now is to remain faithful to our journey, keeping the fig tree as our example! We need to keep our eyes open to recognise Christ as he walks past because the Son of Man is coming in power and glory; but the Son of Man is already here and we need to learn to see him. Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus! The Lord Jesus is here! Fr Mario 12
