To be His Hands and Voice GR8 PEOPLE SELF ASSESSMENT Today you will find a GR8 People self-assessment in your newsletter folder. Your child has reflected on their learning and assessed themselves. They have also provided a short written reflection. We ask that you provide a positive comment and return the form to your child s teacher as soon as possible. We send these self-assessments home to: Showcase the learning they have done at school Share and discuss their learning, thinking, interests, challenges and processes of learning Engage parents in the learning process because research shows that when there is a strong relationship between home and school students perform better GRADUATION MASS & CONCERT SAVE THE DATE This year we will be doing something slightly different for our Graduation Mass and End of Year Concert. This year they will be held on different days. The End of Year Concert will be held on Thursday 11th December (Week 9) at 5:30pm and the Graduation Mass will be held on the last day of school Friday 12th December (Week 9) at 12:00pm. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks. Please put these dates in your calendar. REMEMBRANCE DAY Next Tuesday our students will participate in the Remembrance Day ceremony in the Main Street at 10:30am. Students will walk down to the memorial and lay a wreath to remember our lost soldiers and pay our respect. Students are asked to be in full school uniform (BLACK SHOES ONLY). SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR The Book Fair was well supported last week. Almost $2000 worth of books were purchased which allowed us to purchase over $700 worth of free books on commission. Thank you for supporting our school. Congratulations to Alex O Dea, Abe Borowicki, Daniel Craig, Callum Tuckwell, Jacob Hume and Madi Butson who were winners in the raffle. A special thanks to Chris Malycha who does a wonderful job of organising these events each year. Happy reading! - Damian Smith
2 FROM THE APRIM Last weekend we celebrated All Saints Day (Nov 1 st ), it was also the time chosen by Bishop Greg O Kelly to launch the new Pastoral Plan for the Diocese of Port Pirie The Pastoral Plan states seven strategic directions for parishes, schools, agencies and communities within the diocese to focus on and work towards achieving. The overarching theme of the pastoral plan is To be His Hands and Voice and the context of the plan is the Communion of Saints. The seven strategic directions are: Direction 1 Eucharist To implement effective ways of encouraging all Catholics and those who are searching to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist Direction 2 Family Life & Relationships To support our families as the cornerstone of our Church and society, strengthening them in their love and helping them live the Gospel. Direction 3 Leadership & Community To enable all members of the diocesan community to exercise their gifts in response to God s call to a particular form of service. Direction 4 Reconciliation & Justice To become increasingly recognised as a welcoming, healing and reconciling community and as effective advocates for social justice. Direction 5 Young People To establish a strong partnership with young people, encouraging them to use their gifts within the diocese. Direction 6 Faith Development To encourage and provide opportunities for lifelong faith development. Direction 7 Ecumenical & Inter-faith Development To continue our active commitment to ecumenical and interfaith discussion and collaboration. Each parish, school, agency and community will identify particular areas of the plan to focus on and develop over the coming four years. Within the context of the Communion of Saints it is important for our communities to connect or reconnect with the saints that guide their communities. St Joseph s pays great attention to our two saints, St Joseph and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop however St Anacletus, which is our parish namesake, is a little more unknown. - Bec Fahey St Anacletus Feast Day: 26 April Died ca.92 Pope Anacletus, also known as Cletus, was the third Bishop of Rome, following Saint Peter and Pope Linus. Anacletus served as pope between c. 79 and his death, c. 92. St Anacletus was traditionally understood to have been a Roman who served as pope for twelve years. It is said that Anacletus was a martyr. Due to Anacletus being one of the first popes, there is little documentation about his life and achievements. We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshiped you Whether in brush arbors or cathedrals, Weathered wooden churches or crumbling cement meeting houses Where your name was lifted and adored. We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise: Manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil, Strong hands and those gnarled with age Holy hands Used as wave offerings across the land. We thank you, God, for hardworking saints; Whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, Head ragged or aproned, Blue-collared or three-piece-suited They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come. Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. Bless the memories of your saints, God. May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.
3 SCHOOL NEWS F/1/2 News The F/1/2 class have been exploring fractured fairy tales. A Fractured Fairy-tale is a known fairy tale that has been changed to make a new story. Some of the ways the fairy tale can be changed are point of view, character, setting and plot. We have read lots of traditional and fractured fairytales and have used our favourite fairy tales to write our own fractured fairy tales. By Latisha The Six Little Sheep Once upon a time there were 6 little sheep and they came across a fox that was greedy so they built six little houses. One little sheep heard a noise so the fox knocked on his door. He opened up the door and chomped. So the fox came across another house and knocked on the door, the sheep opened up the door and got chomped. The fox came across another little sheep so the fox knocked on his door and the sheep opened the door AND CHOMP! So one of the little sheep hid a knife and the sheep cut a hole in the fox and he pulls and he pulls and he grabs his brothers out and they lived happily ever after. By Lydiah By John We have used our Investigation time to act out and film our fractured fairy tales. The Move to the Moon Once upon a time three little pigs moved out of their mum s house and moved to the moon. The first pig built his house out of paper. The second pig built his house out of cardboard. The third pig built his house out of bricks. The goat rammed the houses down. The three little pigs moved to the brick house because it is invincible. The end. By Joel
4 HARDWORKING At St Joseph s School each month we focus on one of the 10 important attributes of gr8 people. This month we are focusing on being hardworking. The traditional tale of the hare and the tortoise highlights the importance of remaining focused on the task and persevering. Despite the hare s greater speed, the tortoise ultimately won the race. It is important that we all develop the ability to persist and see things through to completion. This means remaining focused on the task at hand and avoiding procrastination and distractions. Each of us needs to take responsibility for our own actions and behaviour. Accomplishing great things feels fantastic but it does take hard work. Very, very rarely is success at anything the result of luck. The harder we work, the luckier we get! This is true in all areas of life, from sporting champions to amazing scientists, artists, explorers, writers Encouraging students to see a project or activity through to conclusion and putting in the dedication necessary are important. We are all busy juggling the many demands of a busy week. Have you ever tried to learn to juggle three balls. Many people can do it. Like learning most new things it takes determination and being focused. If you are up to the challenge, video tutorials can be found on (search for juggling three balls). Be warned it is challenging but can be fun and addictive! Sayings to encourage hardworking attitude If it is to be, it is up to me. You re a winner if you gave 100%. F or success, attitude is as important as ability. Don't Make Excuses. Make Improvements. Family discussion starters Suggestions for conversations around the dinner table at home When was the hardest you have ever worked? What do you find distracting when you are trying to concentrate? What were you like at school? What did you enjoy and what did you find difficult? Do you have any regrets? Congratulations to the students below for being recognised as being HARDWORKING over the past week CLASS STUDENT REASON F/1/2 Girri Larrigo Riley Limburg for always staying on task and completing work to the best of her ability for challenging himself to extend his writing 3/4 Cooper Sweeney for showing self-discipline by staying on task 5/6/7 Bryce Tuckwell Jana McKeough for being disciplined in his approach to completing learning tasks for working hard and taking pride in the presentation of her work
