2 Dear MSBC, There are two major events at MSBC this month that you need I say you need to clue in on! First, on Sunday evening, March 6 th, beginning at 5:30 pm, Main Street will be hosting Harvest America, a live nationwide FREE event, broadcast from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and streamed to thousands of host locations across the country, including Main Street Baptist Church. This event will feature music from Chris Tomlin (you know who this is, right?), Lecrae, Switchfoot, and MercyMe, and a clear gospel message by Greg Laurie. The goal of Harvest America is to impact a nation desperately in need of the hope found only in Jesus Christ. Greg Laurie is the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California and Harvest Orange County in Irvine, California. He began his pastoral ministry at the age of 19 by leading a Bible study of 30 people. Since then, God has transformed that small group into a church of some 15,000 people. Today, Harvest is one of the largest churches in America. Along with his work at Harvest Ministries, Greg Laurie served as the 2013 Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer, and also serves on the board of directors of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. From approximately 5:30-7:15 pm. we will stream the Christian music concert portion of Harvest America by the featured artists listed above. At approximately 6:45pm., Chris Tomlin will lead worship in song, leading up to Pastor Laurie s message. The event will end around 8:00 pm. As you have been reminded on several Sunday mornings through the video messages of Greg Laurie, please be in prayer for this evangelistic event, invite friends to attend (particularly people who are not Christians), and bring them with you on the evening of March 6 th. The broadcast will be held in our worship center. The atmosphere will be very casual. So remember: pray, invite, and bring! Second, this month we will celebrate Easter! To celebrate our Lord s resurrection, we will explore the last sayings of Jesus from the cross in the two week message series 7 Words Improving Christian Performance through Cross Training on Sunday, March 20 th, and Easter Sunday, March 27 th. When we hear the term cross-training today, it usually refers to an athlete who trains in some sports activity other than the one in which that athlete competes. The goal is to improve overall physical performance. Furthermore, cross-training can also refer to the combining of exercises in one s personal work-out routine to work varying muscle groups and different parts of the body. While these two types of cross-training certainly have their place of importance, there is another type of cross-training that is of far greater importance and lasting value. The cross-training in mind for our two week, Easter season message series is the one that Jesus provided with his last seven words or sayings from the cross. The last words of famous people just prior to their deaths has had an ongoing fascination for many through the years, because last words can give some insight into the final mindset of the people in question and what they wanted to leave as guiding direction for those left behind. With this in mind, Jesus last words do not disappoint. While Jesus last sayings were technically not his last words, since he arose from the dead to speak again, he nevertheless did express and leave behind poignant truth that when applied can exercise various spiritual muscle groups and improve overall Christian performance for the glory of God. Plan now to be here for both Harvest America and & the 7 Words Easter season, message series. By the way, following the Easter Sunday morning service, there will be an Easter egg hunt in the gym for children (toddler age through fourth grade). There will be prize eggs to be found and prizes rewarded to those children who find them. It will be a fun time for all. So, have a great March, be sweet, and live love! Your friend and pastor, Bruce

6 CHOIR NOTES I m going to write this month about a music composer, music teacher, good bass singer, and music publisher named Franklin L. Eiland. He is the grandfather of our own church member, Shaw Eiland, who is also a very good bass singer. Franklin L. Eiland was born March, 1860, in Mississippi. Early in his life he learned to love music and to compose lyrics and music. He wrote some 120 songs and assisted in writing many more. He published books and taught many students about music theory, harmony, composition and voice. He had a great and inspired talent to teach and write sacred music. Other composers wrote of Eiland that he really knew how to help others feel what they sang and sing what they felt. It has been said that he was a very loveable person and also that he was a musical genius who sang with a rich bass voice and left a multitude of the most beautiful songs ever written. Composer George W. Winningham spoke of Eiland as a poet and musician who breathed into his songs such beauty, eloquence and pathos that they persuaded more sinners to repentance than the songs of any other writer of his generation. Franklin L. Eiland only had one son who was named Knowles Shaw Eiland who was Shaw s father. He also was a very good bass singer who sang with many well-known gospel quartets. During the 1940 s and 1950 s he was the bass singer for the Lone Star Quartet and the Blue Ridge Quartet in Raleigh, North Carolina. He also sang in Texas with the Stamps Baxter Mixed Quartet, Imperial Sugar Quartet, and the Stamps Quartet. He was a sought after bass singer. So it is easy to see that our Shaw Eiland got his good bass voice from his grandfather and his father. One of his grandfather s most familiar songs is Hold to God s Unchanging Hand. I won t write all the verses here but my favorite verse says: Trust in Him who will not leave you, Whatsoever years may bring; If by earthly friends forsaken, Still more closely to Him cling. Hold to God s unchanging hand! Hold to God s unchanging hand! Build your hope on things eternal! Hold to God s unchanging hand! If you want to hear the other verse maybe we could persuade Shaw to sing it for us sometime, (but don t tell him I suggested it). I really admire people who can write songs. Most of us will never write one but we can certainly enjoy singing songs that inspired composers have written. If you like to sing please consider joining one of our choirs. The Sanctuary choir is under the direction of our great leader, Mike Claibourn. We are presently working on some good songs for Easter. The Sanctuary choir meets each Wed. night at 7:15 in the choir room. The Sr. Adult choir is also directed by Mike Claibourn and we meet each 1st and 3rd Wednesday morning at 10:00 in the choir room. Please feel free to join us. Shirley Bailey
