2 Whole School News Splinters and Logs It has been wonderful to share over recent newsletters regarding a set of peace-making principles developed and promoted through an Australian organisation called Peacewise (peacewise.org.au). So far, I have shared about the first principle (seeing conflict as an opportunity) and the second principle (glorifying God). This time, I wish to reflect on Principle #3: Getting the log out of our own eye. You may recognise these words, which come from the teaching of Jesus in Matthew s account in the New Testament of the Bible. To help make sense of this principle, let s look at the teaching as it is explained in The Living Bible: Don t criticize, and then you won t be criticized. For others will treat you as you treat them. And why worry about a splinter in the eye of a brother when you have a board (or log) in your own? Should you say, Friend, let me help you get that speck out of your eye, when you can t even see because of the board in your own? Hypocrite! First get rid of the board. Then you can see to help your brother. Jesus seems to be challenging his listeners regarding being upset about the way someone has treated them instead of being focused on the way they are dealing with the other person. So, what might be some logs we need to consider when we are dealing with matters of conflict? Firstly, we can ask whether we have had a critical, negative, or overly sensitive attitude that has led to unnecessary conflict. Is the problem more about our own sense of preciousness or offence, instead about the way someone else is responding to us? If we recognise this type of log in us, sometimes the best course of action can be to take a deep breath, not react immediately, and seek to find helpful ways of gaining a healthy perspective of the situation. The second kind of log we must consider is actual sinful words and actions that we have contributed to the situation. Because we are often blind to our own sins, we may need an honest friend or advisor to help us take an objective look at ourselves and face up to our own contribution to a conflict. When we identify that we may have wronged another person, it is important to admit our wrongs honestly and thoroughly. In the first instance, this may involve offering a sincere apology. I am the first to admit that giving a sincere apology can be one of the hardest things to do particularly to those we are closest to and love the most. But often, restoration and peace can only come once acknowledgement of our own wrong has taken place. Simon Matthews, Executive Principal Sibling Enrolments If you have younger children that you would like to enrol to commence at Chairo in 2018, 2019 or 2020 whether for K3 or K4 Kinder, Prep or other year levels please contact Tina Lewis on (Drouin East, Drouin and Traralgon), Elise Groenewaldt on (Pakenham), Wendy Nyhuis on (Leongatha) or your enquiry to enrolments@chairo.vic.edu.au. It is important that families do this as soon as possible so we can reserve a place for you before offering places to new families. November Student Free Day Please note that there will be a Report Writing Day (i.e. no school for students) at all campuses on Monday 27 November. While that is still a long way off, families may wish to note the date now as the Report Writing Day was originally scheduled to occur a week earlier on Monday 20 November. The date shown on the calendar fridge magnets that many families will have at home is therefore not accurate. 3 From the Senior Chaplain Chairo students are currently exploring sincerity in their homerooms. Many students are looking at Jesus words from Matthew 7:21 23: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers! Scary stuff. There are many who, in their insincerity, convince not only others that they are Christian, but they even convince themselves! And yet on the last day, Jesus will cast them away. The good news the great news is that God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17 Both before and after Jesus scary words in Matthew 7, Jesus gives the antidote. How can we ensure that our relationship with God is sincere and therefore that our salvation is real and not imagined? First, we bear good fruit for God. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Matthew 7:18 Paul may well have had these words of Jesus in mind when he wrote, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 Second, we take God s words seriously in our thoughts and practice. Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Matthew 7:24 Hundreds of years previously, God had summed up, through the prophet Isaiah, what true sincerity looks like: These are the ones I look on with favour: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word. Isaiah 66:2 May God give us the grace to be truly sincere in our lives and worship as we look to Jesus for our salvation. Medon Loupis, Senior Chaplain Careers at Chairo Current Vacancies: VCE Maths Teacher (Drouin) Senior School Physical Education Teacher (Drouin) Learning Support Assistant (Drouin) chairo.vic.edu.au/careers Campus News Junior School Assemblies in Term 2 12 June No Assembly (Queen s Birthday Public Holiday) 19 June Year 2 3JF 26 June 1SFL Junior School Busing If your children are regular bus travellers, but will not be catching the bus on a particular day for any reason, please let Katie at Reception know directly, and in advance if possible. A Note from Janet Junior School students are looking forward to the annual VIP Day on Thursday 22 June. This is a great opportunity for grandparents and other very important people to visit within the school setting. This event will begin in Heritage Hall at am with a short presentation and will conclude at 1.30 pm. Students will be given the opportunity to show their visitors around and then share morning tea/lunch (BYO) together. Please ensure that underage visitors to Chairo are accompanied by a suitable adult. Children with a close connection to their grandparents or other VIPs experience many benefits, including the following: Having a better sense of who they are and where they re from. They have roots, history and a sense of continuity and perspective. Developing higher self-esteem, and better emotional and social skills (including the ability to withstand peer pressure). Feeling special. They re spoiled a little. Believe it or not, research shows that this is a good thing! Getting undivided time and attention that others may not be able to give to them. Having someone to talk with and confide in. Relationships between young and old are important because they make us feel connected, not only to each other, but to something bigger, to the flow of life, the past and the future, and ultimately to God. We hope that you will join us in supporting this event. Invitations have now been circulated, so please ensure they are shared with your child s VIP. Extra invitations are available from Reception. Please note that if your VIP intends to pick your child up from school at the conclusion of the event, they will need to sign your child out and inform the class teacher. Janet King, Head of Junior School

V.I.P. DAY Missing Uniform Items Junior School parents are asked to check their children s jackets and other uniform items to ensure they have the correct ones and not someone else s by mistake. If you find that you have any stowaways at home, please bring them to Reception at your earliest convenience. It is important to note that there will be no formal VCE classes held on Wednesday 14 June. If you would like more information about the GAT, please feel free to access the VCAA website. If, on the day of the GAT, your child is adversely affected by illness, impairment or personal circumstances and is having difficulty arriving at school on time, you should contact Ms Biggs immediately at school on ext: 169. 9 Chairo Christian School invites you to become part of its expanding Instrumental Music Program. Music lessons are an important part of the overall education we provide students. Our aim is to enrich the lives of young people through the passion and love of music and instrumental practice. Learning an instrument enhances commitment, critical assessment and time management and also improves musical and creative skills. Recent studies suggest that learning an instrument can improve scholastic performance. Most importantly creating music gives enjoyment and a sense of achievement to students, boosting their confidence levels. Fees start from $23 for group lessons (dependant on availability) or $33 for individual lessons. A selection of instruments are available to hire at $50 per term. In 2017 we have lessons for the following: Piano Voice Guitar Drums Violin Brass Woodwind Please contact Tammy Williamson on or twilliamson@chairo.vic.edu.au for further information. We currently have a school band in operation. If anyone is interested in joining, please contact Sarah Considine at considine.sarah.f@edumail.vic.gov.au.
