Capel Brandon Newton Steve Thomason Angela Denker (interim) Rolf Jacobson (on leave) Christ is Alive! Welcome! Easter is the name of this most holy day which celebrates God s lifegiving activity. Jesus died, overcame death, and rose to give us life eternal. Easter is also the name of this church family. We thank God for giving us our physical and spiritual lives. Easter means we have nothing to fear, not even death. Easter means Christ has defeated the power of sin, death and evil and now is alive everywhere - especially to those who seek him. Easter means we are empowered to give our lives away because in giving we have new life. Easter Lutheran Church to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ Prelude: I Know that My Redeemer Liveth - G.F. Handel Gathering Introit: Christ Is Risen! Alleluia! - Shepperd Refrain Christ is risen! Alleluia! Risen our victorious head! Sing his praises! Alleluia! Christ is risen from the dead! The Resurrection of Our Lord April 1, , 9 & 10 a.m. Gratefully our hearts adore him, as his light once more appears; Bowing down in joy before him, rising up from grief and tears. Refrain Easter Brass The Easter Choir and Easter Brass Death and hell before him bending, see him rise, the victor now, Angels on his steps attending, glory round his wounded brow. Refrain - John S.B. Monsell ( ) 2006 Birnamwood Publications (ASCAP) A division of MorningStar Publications, Inc., St. Louis, MO Processional Hymn: Jesus Christ is Risen Today Hymnal #365 (Please stand as able) May each of us here today personally know the power of the Risen Christ. 4 Canticle of Praise continued from previous page Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray. C: God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 4
5 Anthem: God s Right Hand and Holy Arm - Hopson The Easter Choir Refrain God s right hand and holy arm have won the victory, God s right hand and holy arm have won the victory. Christ being raised from the dead shall die no more, Death has no power over him; he lives to God. Refrain Why seek the living now among the dead? Recall his promise unto you; he lives again. Refrain Gone is death s victory, gone is death s sting, God gives to us the victory through Christ our Lord. Refrain Christ, being raised from the dead shall die no more. Death has no power over him. He lives to God. Refrain congregation joins: Lesson: Psalm 118: (NRSV) Word I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has given us light. Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song 5
6 Gospel: John 20: 1-18 (NRSV) (Please stand as able.) Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabbouni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord ; and she told them that he had said these things to her. L: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Pastor Brandon Newton Hymn of the Day: This Joyful Eastertide Hymnal #391 continued on next page 6

8 Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Peace Offering of Gifts Offering Hymn: Day of Arising Hymnal #374 continued on next page 8

Within a few minutes, you ll be sent a text with a link to register. We hope you enjoy this new way to share your generosity, and thank you for supporting the ministries of Easter Lutheran Church. Offering Prayer Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Communion is available after each service in the classrooms, near the south entrance. 9
10 Closing Hymn: Thine Is the Glory Hymnal #376 God blesses and sends us in mission to the world Sending Blessing P: Alleluia! Christ is risen. C: Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! Depression May 12 & Grief May 19 & Trauma The word overcome is used in two ways. It s the feeling you can have when confronted with mental illness in its various forms. You can feel overwhlemed and unable to see beyond the immediacy of the moment. The word overcome also means to conquer or prevail. In the midst of mental illness, it s the work of the church and God s people to be a force for healing and peace. Mental illness struggles are woven throughout the Bible. In the Overcome series, we ll talk about these stories and our role as Christians. Join us for worship on Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday.
