4 Dear Partners in Ministry, Beginning June 1, 2010, I will begin a 3 month sabbatical. In my role as the Regional Pastor and President of the Christian Church in Ohio, I have been guided in my call to be a transformational leader by the process of spiritual discernment. Spiritual discernment is calling on the Holy Spirit to lead or give direction on a matter. This has been a guiding principle and theme in my ministry with pastors, congregational leaders and with congregations in the interim period of searching for an installed pastor. My plan is to use my sabbatical time to be centered on personally experiencing, discovering and developing processes of spiritual discernment for pastors and congregations. I will divide my 12 week sabbatical into three 4 week segments for 1) rest and renewal; 2) reading and research; 3) reflection and re-creation. The rest and renewal segment will focus on time with family and the practice of spiritual disciplines. The first priority of the sabbatical will to spend time with family and rest. I plan on re-reading Richard Foster s classic book, Celebration of Discipline, to develop a new daily pattern of the practice of the spiritual disciplines. The reading and research segment will include attending conferences and holding interviews with leaders to learn deeper insights on processes of spiritual discernment. The final segment will focus on writing and renewal of personal creativity through spiritual discernment processes. Each segment will end with a 3 day personal spiritual retreat. This time of Sabbatical will be an experiential discovery of disciplines, methods, processes, means, and tools that the Spirit can work through to help me discern rightly. The study will result in identifying processes of spiritual discernment that will lead to the development of models for pastors and congregations. While I am on sabbatical, Regional Associate Pastor Rev. Steve Bentley will assume my administrative responsibilities and Regional Associate Pastor Dr. LaTaunya Bynum will cover my pastoral assignments. Please be in prayer with me and the Regional Church during this time. I look forward with great anticipation of what God will do through us as Disciples of Christ and leaders in Christ s church in the days ahead. May God s Blessings be with you, Bill

9 Dear Friends Serving Christ, Christian Church in Ohio D I S C I P L E S O F C H R I S T A covenant network of congregations in mission: We are the Body of Christ gifted and called in covenant together as Disciples of Christ to be centers of transformation on the new mission frontier of our own communities I continue to give thanks for the Ohio New Churches in Trimble, Greensrun, Millfield, Taylor s Ridge, Chauncey, Hebron, and Dublin. Oh, these churches were not considered New Churches when I arrived to worship God with them, but at one time a Christian disciple of Christ recognized the need at each of these locations to plant and water a congregation that would make new disciples and nurture disciples in the teachings of Jesus. Because of each of these Churches; my faith has grown; I have been received into a large Christian family; and I know that my inheritance is with Jesus forever more. I believe in the Pentecostal Spirit of New Churches that have been long established and the Pentecostal Spirit of New Churches that are bringing the Gospel of Jesus in new locations to people who have never met Jesus. The Pentecost Special Offering helps to establish New Churches and is vital to the New Churches in Ohio. Unlike established churches, they do not have long time members or large endowments to carry them through difficult economic times such as this. New Churches need our help while they are busy collecting new people to form a new congregation of Disciples of Christ. The Pentecost Special Offering is a large part of our support for Ohio New Churches. Your Ohio New Churches include: 1. Tree of Life in Delaware, New Church Planter-Roger Burns-Watson 2. Shawnee-Springs Community Church in Harrison, New Church Planter-Larry Neilson 3. Living Faith Community in Springboro, New Church Planter- Tom Parker 4. Light of the Community in Dayton, New Church Planter- Willie Barnes-Jackson 5. Brighter Day in Mantua, New Church Planter- Jeff Jackson 6. Iglesia Cristianos Unidos in Campbell, New Church Planter- Louis Morales 7. Misiòn Cristiana Emanuel in Mentor, New Church Planter- Delores Febus 8. Misiòn Cristiana Nueva Vida in Cleveland, New Church Planter- Vanessa Rivera 9. Misiòn Cristiana Faro de Luz in Loraine, New Church Planter- Crucita Marrero 10. New Song in Columbus, New Church Planter- Yvonne Gilmore-Essig 11. Iglesia Cristiana Mana in Columbus, New Church Planter- Iluminado Castillano To help promote the Pentecost New Church offering, I have included a Pentecost Call to Worship written by Rev. Ken Coy, a Pentecost Prayer and Liturgy written by Rev. Steve Brown, and some stories from our Ohio New Churches. I ask you to consider doing 3 things to help our Ohio New Churches. 1. Please promote the Pentecost Special offering in your church. 2. Pray each week for our New Churches. 3. Organize a trip with your Church members to visit an Ohio New Church near you. You will witness the excitement of The Holy Spirit washing over new Disciples of Christ. With Christian love, Rev. C. Morgan Wickizer Chair, New Church Committee Pastor of St. Andrew Christian Church

10 Pentecost Call To Worship By Rev. Ken Coy Member of the Ohio Region New Church Committee Regional Elder One: Come, O church into a sacred encounter with a Presence that embraces us. Many: With a LIGHT which reveals those truths that illumine the promises of our Holy God and gifts us with hope; One: With a WIND which cleanses the polluted air of our selfishness and sin and baptizes us in the purity of forgiveness and love; Many: With a FIRE which burns away all impurities that impede obedience and kindles in us a mighty flame of faithfulness and service; All: Come, O Church that here together we might be engaged, energized, and empowered to become the Spirit-filled community for all in this time and place. Pentecost Liturgy By Rev. Steve Brown Member of the Ohio Region New Church Committee Pastor of Hebron Christian Church Unison Prayer: Creating God, we come to you on this Pentecost morning to celebrate the gift of your Holy Spirit to us, your people. You called the first Christians to go out into the world, spreading the message of the Gospel in every language on earth. Today you continue to call us into every corner of our world, finding those in need of your word, calling us to speak in the language of this new generation, and to start new churches where your Word is missing. Help us to support those who are hearing the call to be a church planter, compel us to financially support these endeavors, and to remind us to prayerfully lift up those who are seeking your way. Strengthen us through the power of the Risen Christ, in whose name we humbly pray, Amen. Litany L: The Disciples were all gathered together in one place, and suddenly a sound like a rushing wind filled the house. Divided tongues, as of fire, rested on each one of them. C: All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages. L: Those who heard the Disciples speaking in their own native languages were amazed, knowing that the Disciples were Galileans. C: But some believed they were simply drunk with new wine. L: Speaking the language of the world can open many new doors for Christians looking to spread God s Word, but will also bring suspicion as to our motives. C: On this morning we lift up those who have heard the call to speak the language of the world by becoming new church planters. L: Their hard work, their courage, and their dedication to their call from God amazes us and gives us hope that God s Word is still being taken to those who are searching for what is missing in their lives. C: May each of us support these new churches and their leaders through prayer, finances, love, care, and encouragement. A: God, bless these ministries, pour your Holy Spirit out upon them, and continue to speak your Word in the languages of your people. Amen.

11 New Church Stories 2010 Iglesia Cristiana Mana is a new Hispanic church in Columbus. Their pastor, Iluminado (Lumi) Castellano, received a call late one night from a woman in Mexico. The woman s son had been arrested and was being held in the Franklin County jail. She had one friend in Columbus who had suggested that pastor Lumi of Iglesia Cristiana Mana might be able to visit him and encourage him in the way of Jesus Christ. Upon hearing the woman s request, Pastor Lumi planned to apply for a prison visitation identification card the very next day. The Deputy who was processing Pastor Lumi s I.D. card mentioned that there was no Spanish language worship service at the jail. This of course caused Lumi to inquire into what he could do to arrange to lead a Hispanic worship service on Sundays in the jail. The deputy helped make the arrangements and the Franklin County Jail had their first Hispanic Worship service on the first Sunday of Advent. They had 35 men attend that first service! The next week attendance grew, and the following week even more attended. Now, every Sunday morning Pastor Lumi preaches the Gospel of Jesus to between 60 and 80 men. He has received many confession of faith and has even lead some thru the waters of baptism. This is just one of the vital ministries that your new church Iglesia Mana has made possible by the Grace of Jesus Christ. (Written by Rev. Morgan Wickizer, Member of the Ohio Region New Church Committee.) New Song Community Church is moving closer to launching a Sunday worship experience. While preparing for their exciting beginning, New Song blesses the Columbus community with its continuing primary presence in worship on Thursdays at 7 p.m. at 1333 Morse Road. The spiritual excitement of New Song s worship has also led the church to temporarily join in worship on Sunday s at 5 p.m. with Karl Road Christian Church. During the months of February and March, New Song s vibrant ministry, is spreading the Good News through community service and outreach by providing meals at Rebecca s Place, a shelter for battered women on the near eastside of Columbus, and they are ministering at Villa Angela Care Center on Karl Road. New Song is a church on the move, and Rev. Yvonne Gilmore-Essig, pastor, invites our support and presence with them in the following upcoming events. Please mark your calendars for next Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 7 p.m. for Instruments of History, at 1333 Morse Road. Columbus Jazz vocalist, Mary McClendon will be featured, and half of the offering received will be sent to relief efforts in Haiti. (Written by Rev. Elaine Fennel, Member of the Ohio Region New Church Committee.) Misiòn Cristiana Nueva Vida is a new church in Cleveland led by New church planter, Vannessa Rivera. Pastor Rivera s husband worked next to a Hispanic man for several years and many times invited him to come and worship at their newly formed church. On Easter 2009, Mr. Rivera s coworker came and worshiped with them. He was so impressed by the worship service and the dedication of their pastor, who had stayed by the church when the church had lost their meeting place and struggled for over a year before being able to worship at the Cleveland Christian Home s building on West Boulevard. The next week the co-worker was back in worship with his wife and they joined the church because of the powerful Spirit that God had poured out on the church. This man and woman are now active Disciples of Christ. Each week they are in worship and volunteer as active leaders in the church. This Easter, The couple celebrated with the church, as her brother made his confession of faith. Misiòn Cristiana Nueva Vida is making new Disciples for Christ.

Campus View Blvd, Suite 110, Columbus, OH "Biblical Knowledge: The Bible in Congregational Life" This training experience is designed to help licensed ministers and other congregational leaders to understand how the 66 books of the Protestant Canon came together as the Bible we know today, to learn an overview of the history of the Bible in English, and look specifically at how the Bible is used (and misused) in congregational study, planning, and prayer. We will consider some of the extra-biblical influences that shape our churches' view of Scripture (such as the "Left Behind" series, various study Bible tools, etc.), and will look closely at Judges 5 & 6, Ruth, Romans 16, & Philemon as case studies. Please read those four passages before the first session; also suggested is for you to obtain and start reading "In Search of Paul" by Crossan & Reed, and "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. 24 Camp Christian Summer Programs Camp Christian is owned and operated by the Christian Church in Ohio to serve its needs for resident camping, retreats and meetings. Christian Education, Leadership Development, Spiritual Enrichment and Fellowship Ministries are its designated purposes. Camp Christian is located in Magnetic Springs, Ohio just 12 miles west of Delaware. Our 93 acres of camp grounds offer a peaceful setting for camping experiences. A professional staff prepares well-balanced meals and maintains the grounds. The camp cabin clusters provide comfortable housing and indoor facilities for our campers. Lifeguards are on duty during pool hours. We have two pools, one 3-5 feet deep and one equipped with a diving board for the more experienced swimmers. Other camp facilities include wooded areas, open areas for recreation, a lake, a dining hall, a craft cabin, an administration building, and a beautiful outdoor worship site referred to as Vespers. With dedicated counselors, campers will be led through a week-long Christian experience in which, through classes, workshops, and organized play, they will strengthen their knowledge, deepen their faith, and build everlasting friendships. Each camp is deeply rooted with wonderful traditions, but all have the same goal strengthening our faith in Jesus. No one shall be denied admission to our camp(s) or to the benefits of our U.S. Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Program(s), because of race, color, national origin, sex, or handicap. Otter Junior Camp Have you completed 3 rd, 4 th or 5 th Grade? Spend a whole exciting, funfilled week with friends at Camp Christian during Otter Camp, June 20-26! We learn about God, Jesus and ourselves, as we do lots of fun outdoor activities. Singing, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, studying nature, playing games, making crafts these are just some of the things we do at Otter Camp. This year s theme is Kids Can Too! We Can Do It! as we learn about children in the Bible, how their faith made a difference in the world and how We Can Too! Otter Camp is a wonderful way to get your summer off to a great start! There are 2 other Junior Camps offered this summer through the United Church of Christ. For more information on Badger and Beaver Junior Camps go to Chi Rho Camps Chi Rho Camp can be the best week of your life. You'll do more in one week than you ever thought possible. Experience serious times of worship, Bible Study, prayer, and discussion in our Quest Groups. Enjoy fun times of swimming in our two pools, fishing, games, singing, talent shows, and campfires. Make new friends which may last a lifetime. Grow in your Christian Faith. Each day Chi Rho Campers gather in Quest Groups during the morning hours (groups of 8-12 campers learning by studying the scripture, crafts and games); in Morning Prayers by Cabin Groups each morning; and in Evening Prayers each evening as a whole camp. The week culminates in an inspirational Consecration Service on Friday evening. Each week the camps are blessed with outstanding Christian pastors and lay persons as Assistant Directors, Counselors (cabin, table, Quest Group) who engage with the campers in study, prayer, recreation, etc., befriending young people in a way that has an impact on their lives for good. The program is blessed by the time, talent, treasure, and love extended so generously by these devoted volunteers. Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) Conference The purpose of CYF Conference is to encourage and challenge High School youth to build a life-transforming relationship with God in Jesus Christ. This is accomplished by providing a safe place for youth to: Experience the grace of God by being fully accepted just as they are Build deep friendships with other Christian youth Build deep relationships with adult Christian role models that care for them Study and discuss biblical passages and ideas together with other youth and adults Practice spiritual disciplines, including prayer Experience meaningful youth-led worship Have fun with other Christians Build leadership skills that will help to strengthen the ministries of their home congregations Build a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ and a deeper faith in God Conference is said to have a "Spirit." When we begin to cooperate as a group, begin to really care for each other and everyone in camp, begin to sense God s presence, we begin to notice that "spirit" of conference. The Conference "spirit" is the positive affirmation and cooperation and involvement of everyone in the Conference program. Adding a sense of the real presence of God and the joy of being in God s community, we recognize the "spirit" of conference comes from God or it doesn t really come at all. It is in fact the Holy Spirit. Through our study, worship, group singing, and group recreation we begin to know each other and sense a oneness of purpose. All are designed to help us fully enjoy conference and become a living part of the Conference "Spirit." We begin to understand that we are really a vital part of something great and that all of us together, living, singing, worshipping, and working make CYF Conference. As we make our commitment to God, we know what makes CYF Conference live. Advance Ministries Conference Advance Ministries is a ministry that provides young adults, persons ages & out of High School, experiences where they can enjoy a community of Christian friends and share their love, life, and fellowship, while developing a stronger faith in Jesus Christ. Following breakfast each morning, you can join in Bible Study which ends with a time of personal and private devotions in an outdoor setting. The rest of the morning is filled with a presentation by a different Christian leader every day, followed by small group discussion time. In the afternoon, you have an opportunity to design the evening s worship service, plan the evening's recreation, or other tasks from which you can choose. Much of the afternoon is free for you to swim, fish, play volleyball, talk with friends, or whatever you choose. In the evening, the outdoor worship service designed and led by the Conferees, is one of the high points of the day. There is also a special recreation every night as well. The events of each day end with a Closing Circle led by the three officers of the week. The Closing Circle is a time of reflection, wonderful singing, and always some humor. The week culminates on Saturday night with a moving and meaningful worship experience called Consecration. Each day at Advance Conference contains opportunities for growth in your faith, for making new friends, for being at least a little silly, and for many other experiences as well. It is hoped that your personal relationship with God will become even more real. A day or a week at Advance Conference can never be adequately described in words. It must be experienced firsthand. For more information about Conference or Advance Ministries go to Adventure Camp Photo Safari Ohio The practice of photography can, indeed, become a profound spiritual practice, so that it helps the photographer and viewer become more mindful of their relationship with God, and with other human and more-than-human companions in creation. It is a way to visually celebrate or grieve what is, as well as find inspiration and motivation for what can be, as Spirit would have it; prayers without words How would you use a camera to give witness to Spirit at play in this world? Taken from Christian Church in Ohio s Adventure Camp Ministry is sponsoring a Photography Camp based at Camp Christian this summer. This camp will consist of several spiritually themed day trips around Ohio for photographers of any level. The group will be heading to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, The Hocking Hills, Downtown Columbus, the Franklin Park Conservatory, and more.
