15 MISSION OPPORTUNITIES AT REGIONAL ASSEMBLY One Body: Clothed in Love A theme statement like that is powerful. We are indeed One Body: Clothed in Love. As the Regional Assembly Committee looked at this theme it became clear that we need to have a mission that would share powerful message. Our mission for this Regional Assembly will be three fold and you can get started during the summer. Local Mission: We are awaiting word from the Red Cross that we can have the bus there again this year but on Saturday to allow even more people to donate blood. Please check the box on the registration form indicating your willingness to give blood. If you are unable to give blood but would like to support this local mission, we need volunteers to help register those who will be giving blood. Please let me (Stephen Bentley, sbentley@ccinoh.org) know of your interest. Regional Mission: Cleveland Christian Home will be our Regional Mission activity. Because many of these children attend school in the Cleveland School system they need school clothes that are mandated by the schools. Included in this packet is a list of those clothing items that are needed and appropriate. You may bring these with you to the Regional Assembly and put them in the Mission Room. (As school will have already started and you may want to give your donations before school begins, please let me know of your donation so we can all share in the mission your congregation has done.) Global Mission: While talking with Church World Service about their needs given all of the events of this winter and spring, we discovered that one of their greatest needs is for School kits. Below is a list of the necessary items. If you church would like to make some kits, bring them to the Regional Assembly. My goal is for the Regional Assembly to dedicate 2000 school kits to help kids around the world. (Here again, if your congregations wants to send them to CWS in time for school this next year, please let us know how many you sent so we can reach our goal of 2000.) School Kits give children in impoverished schools, refugee camps, or other difficult settings some of the basic tools for learning. To assemble a School Kit you will need: One pair of blunt metal scissors (rounded tip) Three 70-count spiral notebooks or notebooks totaling pages (no looseleaf or filler paper) One 30-centimeter ruler (12") One hand-held pencil sharpener One large eraser Six new pencils with erasers One box of 24 crayons (only 24) One 12" x 14" to 14" x 17" finished size cotton or lightweight canvas bag with cloth handles. (Please, no reusable shopping bags or backpacks.) Pack all items inside the cloth bag and send $2.00 for each bag send to pay processing and shipping to where they will be used. 20 Christian Church in Ohio D I S C I P L E S O F C H R I S T A covenant network of congregations in mission: We are the Body of Christ gifted and called in covenant together as Disciples of Christ to be centers of transformation on the new mission frontier of our own communities Dear Sisters in Christ, Registration is now open for the 2010 Ohio Disciples Women s Ministries Fall Retreat September at Camp Christian! The theme for the Retreat is Feed the Hungry Heart and we will be led by minister and spiritual director Carol Vaccariello. Many of you have asked for a true retreat that will allow you to walk the grounds of Camp Christian and spend time in prayer and meditation. So this year will be different than retreats of previous years. This year will be more of a hands on, highly participatory retreat, with opportunities for worship, art, poetry, storytelling and reflection presented in a number of ways. Carol would like all participants to bring the following items: A Bible Shawl to use for prayer Yarn and knitting needles or crochet hook Journal/pen/pencils/colored pencils or markers Digital camera (if available) Loose clothing for movement prayer Old magazines Personal recorder (if available) Books to share on library table (be sure to write name on cover) Here is a list of general items that you will need for your stay at Camp Christian: bedding, toiletries, comfortable clothing and shoes, bath towel/washcloth, rain gear, flashlight, bug repellent and needed medications. Also be sure to bring some extra money for the bookstore, the silent auction gift baskets, and Sunday mornings offering. Continued

21 A new experience will happen on Friday evening. We will be having a wine (juice) and cheese party. If interested and you would like to share with the other women, please bring grape (white or red) juice, or cranberry juice and cheese. There are no workshops at this retreat, but as always Charlotte Bougher will be directing the retreat choir. All are welcome to volunteer to participate in the choir if they wish. Because this year s retreat flows from Friday evening to early Sunday afternoon, and because it is important for participants to be present for the entire event, this year, THERE WILL BE NO SATURDAY REGISTRATION. Participants will be asked to be present the entire weekend. This year we are inviting high school age young women to serve as stewards for the weekend, helping to move equipment and assisting in whatever ways they may be needed. Registration will be waived for any young woman who serves as a steward. Anyone interested is asked to return the enclosed form. They will also need a letter of affirmation from their pastor listing the young woman s involvement in the congregation. 27 The 2010 Reconciliation Offering will be received in congregations on September 26th and October 3rd. Reconciliation Ministry Offering is used to fund our Church s mission priority to become an proreconciling/ anti-racist church through experiential education, inclusive worship and intentional dialogue across difference. Funds from this offering provide Youth and Young Adult camps, training programs for leadership development as well as resources to promote small group study and community-building. Minute for Reconciliation Special Offering A few of us in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) may be confused by the recent efforts to connect the Reconciliation Ministry Offering and World Communion Sunday. World Communion Sunday celebrates our essential oneness as followers of Christ. Reconciliation Ministry Offering confronts our lingering divisiveness. On one Sunday a year, the 11 o clock hour can be the most united hour of the week. The combination of the two feels convoluted. Do we tell our ecumenical story or our anti-racism story? Quote John Mott or Martin Luther King? Is this a Sunday to rejoice or repent? Read from a particular angle, these concerns make sense. The Reconciliation Offering celebrates our unity. From our earliest days as a movement, the Disciples of Christ have been ethnically diverse consisting first of African-American and Anglo-American Disciples. In 1899, the first Hispanic Disciples church began. Pacific/Asian Disciples also have a long history within this movement. Today, one of the fastest growing groups within the Disciples of Christ is among Haitian Christians. At times it has felt as though we were taking one step forward and two steps back. Despite disappointing manifestations of racism and cultural pressures for separation, Disciples have repeatedly chosen to journey together. In the same way, our ecumenical story contains moments of division. It has faced challenges and setbacks. Today, the ecumenical movement seeks to craft a unity that not only transcends denominational boundaries but also cultural, racial and ethnic boundaries. World Communion Sunday in this decade of this century only makes sense in light of the Gospel s message of reconciliation. To utter the words Christian unity in our local churches today is to both celebrate and call people to repentance. Ultimately, what draws us to celebrate and calls us to repent is God s Spirit. It is the Spirit of God that transforms us and makes us whole. God s spirit sets our hearts on fire and makes us unified not uniform. The Spirit of God invites us to enter God s grace in unity and live out God s grace through reconciliation. Won t you give to God s mission of wholeness?
