The Evangelism and Women s Missions & Ministries staff of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) would like to express our gratitude to the following people for their efforts in preparation for the 2013 Oklahoma State Evangelism Conference. Thank you, Oklahoma Baptists, for your gracious support of the Cooperative Program that makes it possible to offer this conference at no cost. 4 WELCOME Welcome to the 2013 State Evangelism Conference! Serve Like Jesus is the theme of this year s conference. Over the next two days you will be immersed in the basic components of the state-wide emphasis, SERVE Oklahoma (SOK), that will run from now through Spring SOK is mobilizing your congregation to take Jesus outside the walls of your church building to be the church instead of just doing church. This involves organizing a Day of Service and a Season of Service through your Sunday school or small groups. However, instead of just having your people do a local mission project by themselves, they will invite lost and unchurched friends, neighbors and acquaintances to participate with them. Then the Baptist Messenger will help you capture your story for distribution in your local paper and media. Your evangelism group takes seriously the task of putting together an anointed time that will lift your spirit and instruct your mind. Much prayer and planning has gone into crafting each speaker and session to highlight Jesus Christ and His commission s implications to you and your church. This marks the fourth year that MY316 has been a part of the conference emphasis. This is in response to pastors sharing a desire to stay focused on one thing for several years instead of constantly moving on to something bigger and better. The investment made by Oklahoma Baptists to provide this free material merits the good stewardship of continued promotion. Additionally, new MY316 resources continue to be developed. While we are staying with MY316, the 2013 scripture of Mark 10:45 highlights that it is not a choice between evangelism and service, but both together. Jesus Himself says, For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45 NIV84). This evangelism conference serves as the kickoff for SOK. During this conference I want you to commit to leading your church to participate in SOK by: Designating March 2013 as SERVE OKLAHOMA MONTH Being the church instead of doing church 4

Mobilizing believers to take Jesus outside the walls of your building Organizing a Day of Service and a Season (several weeks to several months) of Service through your Sunday school or small groups Share your church s story with the Baptist Messenger To help you follow through on this commitment and to imitate Mark 10:45, Bob Mayfield and I have updated the Power Up Your World materials that are being distributed here at the conference in the SERVE Oklahoma Resource Kit. My prayer is that this conference and the resource kit will renew your passion for sharing Christ with your community and prepare you to lead your congregation in being the church instead of doing church. I trust in the weeks to come you will look back on this conference as a wise investment of your time, money and attention. I trust that from what you were reminded of here or from new things you learned, you will lead your people to serve and share Jesus Christ through actions and words so that 2013 will be the year your church makes great strides in reaching every man, woman, boy and girl in your community with the gospel. Serving like Jesus, Tim Gentry Evangelism Group Leader, BGCO HOST CHURCH WELCOME Welcome to our 2013 State Evangelism Conference! It s my prayer that in our time together here we will all be re-energized to serve like Jesus as we follow Christ in desiring to impact lostness. It s our pleasure at Southern Hills, to host this event and to actively pray for the Lord s Spirit to be poured out upon us in these sessions. If we may assist you with any needs while you are here, please let our staff and volunteers know. As we truly follow Jesus, HE will make us fishers of men. Doug Melton Senior Pastor 5

Please look closely at the program booklet for times and room locations. TUESDAY MORNING 9:00-11:45 Breakout Session 1 9:00-10:15 MY316: An Evangelism Strategy for the Entire Church Randy Adams Room A Do you want to teach every church member how to share the gospel, even children? How about engaging every member in prayer for their un-churched friends? What if you could get the materials to do this, and more, including resources to disciple new believers, at absolutely no cost? MY316 will provide all you need to engage your church in sharing Christ with others. Children and Salvation Glenn Barber Room A306 Helping Children understand their decision to receive Christ, and knowing when the time is right for baptism. Equipping Women to Serve Like Jesus Monica Rose Brennan Room A204 Discover how to equip women to evangelize and disciple others in the local church. Women will be reminded of the necessity of women reaching women found in Titus 2:3-5 as well as how to apply unchanging, Biblical principles to their everyday lives. Come for a time of inspiration and encouragement as we learn how to serve like Jesus! Leading Men to Christ Keith Burkhart Room A304 There are millions of men in America who are isolated from the gospel and the church. In this session we ll explore practical ways to reach and lead men in your church and community to Christ. 8

Transforming your VBS into a community wide Evangelism tool Andy Finch Room A154 You re already doing VBS so why not maximize its potential as a community wide evangelism tool? In this seminar, you ll learn some proven VBS outreach, promotion, prayer, planning, follow-up and leadership development strategies that you can customize to fit your church and community. church EVANGELISM ACCELERATOR Tim Gentry Room A This session will orient you with the book of the same name that serves as a pastor s personal evangelism assistant. Designed with pastors and lay leaders in mind, Tim will help you accelerate your church evangelism process by answering key questions: Are you making disciples? How do you know? Have you defined what a disciple looks like? Do you have a disciple-making process in place? Is evangelism a priority in your process? This practical resource will assist you in mobilizing your people to share the gospel with a lost world and to follow up with new disciples. Finishing Well: Making a Kingdom Impact Amy Hanson Room A159 While the world may teach us that the second-half of life is a time for slowing down, the truth is that your family, your friends, your community and your church desperately need what you have to offer. In this session we ll debunk several myths about aging and look at how you can use your time, resources and experience to make a difference for Christ in this world. Communications, Social Media and You Brian Hobbs and Chris Forbes Room A301/305 It doesn t take an expert to communicate your message using today s tools of technology. Brian and Chris will walk you through what you most need to know. Sharing Christ With Challenging People Groups Craig Hobbs Room A206 Jesus used one approach for Nicodemus in John 3, and another for the Samaritan Woman in John 4. Nicodemus knew the law, and the Samaritan Woman had her people s traditions. Sharing Christ with Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah s Witnesses, and others that the Lord puts in our paths is challenging, but rewarding. It is also becoming more and more commonplace to be in these situations. This session will equip Christians for these encounters, and help leaders to equip their people. Craig s proven techniques and personal experience will be shared during the session. 9

The Pastor s Strategy for Evangelism With Kids Mark Jones Room A Pastors will receive solid plans for leading an invitation in Sunday School classes, equipping parents, ideas with events like VBS and camp and how to effectively speak to an audience of kids. Teaching Your Child to Serve Like Jesus Heather Keller Room A114 Come and join the discussion, see the research, and hear from a mom and children s ministry consultant about ways to serve alongside your children while teaching them what it means to be like Jesus. Leave with easy-to-implement ideas that will have you and your children looking for the next service opportunity! Serving Like Jesus in Reaching out to the Asian Community Ted Lam Room H218 This Seminar will focus on three basic concepts which are: Outreach is all believer s responsibility, outreach with respect to cultural and tradition and outreach to parents and family members by being the living example. Reaching American Indians through Servanthood Eddie Lindsey Room H We will look at Jesus method of Servant Evangelism to help us develop servant evangelism methods to use among Native Americans. Listening Evangelism Basics Cris Lowery Room A153/155 In a world where so many people are yearning to be heard, the need for people with listening skills is at an all-time high. In this session, we will be focusing on the simple skills anyone can learn to be an accomplished listener as well as how to weave the IMB s storying approach into the conversation as an evangelistic element. IMPLEMENTING SERVE Oklahoma IN YOUR CHURCH Bob Mayfield Room A This session will take you step by step through the SERVE Oklahoma Resource Kit. You will be able to go back to your church and immediately mobilize your Sunday School classes or small groups to develop local mission projects where friends, neighbors and prospects can be invited to serve their community. Through these mission projects an environment of evangelism will be created for personal witnessing and invitations to Bible study. Exegetical preaching to a multi-media generation Ed Newton Room A147 Inspiring communicators of the Gospel to find their power and connectivity to an audience by relying upon the Spirit filled power within the Scripture. 10

Serve Like Jesus In Practical Ways Shelley Urton Room A152 Hear about practical ways you, your family and your church can impact the community around you. In addition, hear how Shelley experienced working alongside members of her church and how they served like Jesus in the mission field of their own neighborhood. From the 1700 s until today, African Americans have been an important part of the outreach strategy for Southern Baptists. Come learn how you can be part of this rich heritage. 27 UNLABELED is designed to be short enough to read in one sitting, and in-depth enough to give a realistic picture of young adult culture and worldview. It s a great starting point for learning about the unique challenges the emerging generation present and ways to effectively reach out to them. Pick up your free copy at the Registration table. UNLABELED 2 From 1997 to 2010, the number of young adults enrolled in Sunday school has declined by 22,015 people, a decline of roughly 32 percent. A significant portion of these have migrated to churches outside our denominational influence. The question we must ask ourselves is will we accept this trend as inevitable, or do we want to do what it will take to reverse it? This book is designed for those who want to reverse the trend.
