2 // CHURCH PROFILE // CHURCH PROFILE Our HISTORY In 1955 two existing Christian and Missionary Alliance churches merged to form North Seattle Alliance Church under the pastoral leadership of E.W. Holman. A prime piece of property on Haller Lake was purchased and a multi-purpose initial building was constructed. Wendell Price, a gifted preacher, began his ministry in 1963 and as the church grew a new building was completed in Over the years NSA has demonstrated a strong commitment to biblical preaching and the support of missions. It has a rich tradition of sharing its facility with various ethnic congregations and has helped launch other C&MA church plants in the Puget Sound region. The church has benefited from several strong Lead Pastors (James Davey, David Klingsing, Kelvin Gardiner, and Mark Price) and gifted pastoral staff members. After an extended period of staff turnovers and interim ministries, Andy Snodgrass began serving as Lead Pastor in 2010, enlisting a young staff, and led the church in a season of renewed focus on reaching out to the community. Though the majority of the congregation is older, several younger singles and families have been added to the church family in recent years. In September of 2014, the Ministry Council enlisted the services of New Church Ministries to conduct an in-depth assessment of the church. (The complete Assessment Report is available on the church s website, nsachurch.org/pastoral-search.) A list of recommendations for the church to work on during an intentional period of transition was presented to the congregation. Steve Conway was secured by the board to serve as an intentional interim pastor. Pastor Steve has been guiding the church through a Refocusing process as it prepares to welcome a new Lead Pastor. Our MINISTRIES Worship Gathering Our church provides a blended worship service on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Worship teams enlisted by our Worship Director lead music in our service which is contemporary in style. Our current average Sunday morning is approximately 260 (2012: : : 265). First Impressions A team of volunteers actively provides hospitality ministries to guests on Sunday mornings with specific programs aimed at assimilating newcomers into the life and ministry of the church. This is an area of ministry which has been given special attention during the transition. Adult Learning Communities Consistent, high quality classes are provided for adults prior to the morning service on Sunday mornings. A solid balance of class topics are presented by qualified lay leaders. These classes are well attended. Community Groups Approximately 11 Community Groups meet through the week in homes with IN, UP and OUT elements. Glo-cal Missions North Seattle Alliance has a rich tradition as a church which generously supports the international ministries of The Christian and Missionary Alliance as well as other mission organizations. It conducts an annual Missions Conference, bringing in international workers to share what God is doing through their ministries around the world. Local outreach ministries include Talk Time ESL program, KidsReach (tutoring), Way of Compassion (food bank ministering to under-resourced people who come to the Puget Sound Christian Clinic housed in the church), The Bridge (a café open to the public) and annual events like the Hoedown, summer Soccer Camp and Kids Adventure Camp. During the transition we have been leaning into a stronger emphasis on local outreach, thus the term glo-cal (combining global and local missions). (Continued)

NSA has waterfront property which provides picnicking and boating opportunities. Our facilities are heavily used throughout the week, shared by both Christian and community groups: Bible Study Fellowship, Northwest Girls Choir, Puget Sound Christian Clinic, Restoration (Messianic congregation), etc. Our facility is debt-free with ample space for congregational growth. Maintaining and repairing our aging facilities is an on-going challenge. Our FINANCES North Seattle Alliance is debt free and keeps a reasonable amount in reserves. Our budget for is $640,445. Total Operational Giving (minus missions giving) 2012: $574, : $578, : $565,501 4 Our GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE Our church is governed by a single, policy-setting board (called the Ministry Council), which assumes responsibility for ministry outcomes (the big picture direction of the church) while empowering the Lead Pastor to direct, through his staff and volunteers, ministry means (daily operations) to fulfill those outcomes. From 2008 through 2011, the church experienced a steady decline, down to 256 by During the past three years, , the decline has stabilized. In order to stimulate a positive trajectory of new growth, the church leadership acknowledges the need for a unique kind of pastor at this season in its life. This type of leader is sometimes referred to as a Turnaround or Revitalization Pastor. Conduct an audit of existing ministries, prioritizing ministries which can best enable our church to achieve its vision. 6 // COMMUNITY PROFILE // COMMUNITY PROFILE North Seattle Alliance Church is located north of downtown Seattle, Washington, just off the major I-5 freeway. It is part of the Haller Lake community with waterfront property. The surrounding neighborhood is quite diverse in its ethnic and socio-economic make up. Within a 1 to 2 mile radius are Northgate Mall, Northwest Hospital, North Seattle Community College and several schools. Seattle represents a challenging American mission field since its population is one of the most secularized and unchurched in the country. Though a growing percentage of the congregation lives near the church, the majority of its members commute from surrounding areas. The church s café as well as the Puget Sound Christian Clinic housed in its facility, attracts many people from the community. The church has sustained a long term partnership with the local elementary school, working together to provide school supplies and a regular tutoring program. Seattle offers numerous advantages as a major metropolitan city: theater, arts, museums, restaurants, universities, major sports teams and a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.
