2 PENTECOST May is a busy month with graduations and Mother s Day and Affirmation of Baptism. In this busy atmosphere, the celebration of Pentecost seems to get lost in the crowd. So, my message this month is an attempt to draw your attention to not only the day of Pentecost, but God s message through the Holy Spirit that permeates this season of the church year. I d like to highlight two scriptures for us to ponder. Jesus said, The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where is comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8) The Holy Spirit has always been a bit of a mystery. It s easy to talk about God the Father who created all things and continues to create newness all the time. And Jesus, well we have the whole New Testament (27 books) to read about his life, death, resurrection, and continued work in our hearts. But the Spirit, that s another story. Yet, it is the Holy Spirit who moves us on the winds of love, who stays with us in the threatening storms of life, and who whispers God s promise of love and salvation in our ears at just the right time. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:1-2) These words from Acts remind us that our true life is most often found in the midst of others. The same Spirit blows us together, rushing in where we least expect it, and surprising us with the beauty and the courage to see those around us with new eyes. The Spirit opens the doors of our hearts and minds and gives us the passion to love as we have been loved. Pentecost is a green season, a season of growth. As we ponder these words of scripture and allow them to sink deep within, may the Spirit blow all around us and bring new life. 2 YOUR CHURCH STAFF COUNCIL MEMBERS President: Brenda Castellano V. I began to reflect on what has gone on here. The power and control of government felt so close. The chatter of individuals passing me by, making me wondering what role they have or are they just another visitor like me. My mission in early April was to attend the End Racism Rally, and join in on the Day of Advocacy. These events were made possible by the National Council of Church, which locally is the Wisconsin Council of Churches. These two events also centered on the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s brutal assassination in Memphis, TN. I was able to hear a number of speakers, from many different denominations and religions of the world. The one which sticks out the most was Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield (of Ben & Jerry s Ice Cream). They began by telling their story regarding the ice cream business and how they grew up in a middle class suburb just outside of New York City in the late 60 s & early 70 s. Cohen dropped out of medical school and struggled to keep a job. Greenfield was arrest a number of times for marijuana use in high school and college. Both of these records would be considered major negatives to receive a business loan at a local bank. Yet, they were approved without any questions regarding past issues to start Ben & Jerry s Ice Cream. Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield then went back to the beginning of their story to tell it a second time, this time as if they were African American. The story took an all too common tone of racism because of what they did and who they were. They ended their story with a simple ask: What if we were black? Racism in America is not even close to being over. In the whole history of the world, only in the last few generations have people of color felt close to equal. The fact remains, equality has not translated into reality. Whites have had hundreds of years to gather wealth, property, and most importantly status. During my day of advocacy I was able to meet with staffers from Senator Johnson s and Representative Duffy s offices (ironically they both were at their Wisconsin offices because Congress was not in session). I brought up two topics, school safety and institutional racism. Both topics should be bipartisan issues. For the most part, I felt both offices brought up ways they had been and will be supporting security funding for local schools. When it came to racism the tone was not as positive. Both offices recognized the problem, but did not know what the government s role should be in helping solve the problem. To me, this was a bit disappointing. Overall, I felt both offices respected my thoughts and time. If you would like to see photos of my travels you can visit Zion s Facebook page. I ask you to pray for our leaders in government, in whatever way seems fit to you. Craig Gauerke, Director of Congregational Ministry 10 3
