2 PAGE 2 MAKIN G OUR MAR K A thank you from Al Schultz I want to thank everyone for your prayers, thoughts, and cards. My recovery is moving along but not as fast as my impatience demands. I am still under house arrest but hope to be free to be out and about by August. One thing I learned from this experience is "gratitude". I am grateful for friends and neighbors who take good care of us. I am also grateful for waking up each morning! 3 From the Pastor New Worship Schedule Worship Service 9:30 am Education 10:30am PAGE 3 Why are we shifting our Worship time 30 minutes? "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy" is the Third Commandment for us to contemplate God and what is Godly. Sunday is the day of rest and recreation - and should be the highlight and an alternative to the often hectic, preoccupied daily life. Culture is changing. Beyond the recommendations of our own congregation the studies of "new church starts" all advise later times and by observing the attendance at other churches they all point out that later services are better attended... We are also seeking ways for us to grow and be more welcoming for new people. At the Annual Meeting we addressed that : We continue the habits we observe that honor the plans people make for the rest of Worship is the day. enriched by Families with children, people who work late on our variety Saturday and some of our seniors find it to be less stressful with a 9:30 start. and We will continue to respect the Liberian diversity Congregation, which begins to arrive after 11:30am. We are addressing the concerns of both family/personal and our church growth. The benefits of Worship are found in the people, the socializing and learning by example. Our goal is to invite the young and new to faith, observe and develop the habits of Worship by participating with both sinners and saints. Worship is enriched by our variety and diversity. Every member of our Congregation is important, and our goal is to strengthen Saint Mark and enhance our Worship. In Christ's Service, Pastor Walt

4 PAGE 4 MAKIN G OUR MAR K A small group of us met at church on Wednesday August 14th, to begin to plan for the future!! We had a rousing discussion and came up with lots of fun ideas. PLEASE join us as your schedules permit. Robin led us with devotions, focusing on Doing it for God! which was a great way for us to start. We reviewed a small packet of materials from both the National WELCA and the Saint Paul Area Synodical Women s Organization. Extra packets and agendas can be found in the church office. We agreed to purchase the materials for the upcoming Women s Bible Study, using Delores Witte Memorial Money, thanks to that awesome suggestion by Robin!! The Bible Study is In Good Company: Stories of Biblical Women. If you are interested in learning more about this study (used across the country by the Women of the ELCA), please plan to attend the workshop at Saint Mark NORTH SAINT PAUL on Saturday September 28th from 8:30-2:30 (see Jackie for details). We agreed that we would like to meet monthly, we selected the third Thursday of each month from 7:00-8:30 P.M. The next three meetings (September/October/ November) will be held at church in the Fireside Room with the December meeting to be held at Robin s house!! Each meeting will include the Bible Study mentioned above along with time for getting to know one another. In addition to these monthly gatherings we talked about other activities such as: learning to make jam together; having a women s retreat; Secret Pals; local mission work and fund raising so that we can attend the Triennial Gathering, the Convention of the WELCA in Charlotte, NC next summer, so as you can see, we have no lack of things to do!! Please put the following dates on your calendars and JOIN US!!

It is a neuro-muscular disease that causes muscle weakness affecting all the voluntary muscles of the body. The books are being sold for $13.50 each( half price ) and the purchase is tax deductible. 9 PAGE 9 Rally Day Sunday, September 8th All children ages 3 12 will kick off the school year with the blessing of the backpacks and some fun and games while signing up for Sunday School. All students, young and old are asked to bring their backpacks to worship and have them blessed for a prosperous school year. Following worship, the parents are asked to register their children for Sunday School and participate in the faith formation planning in the upcoming year. The kids will be enjoying some fun and games and prepare for Sunday School classes to begin the following Sunday, September 15th. We look forward to a great Sunday School year with your family! Confirmation Class begins Sept. 18th All youth 7th grade through 9th grade that have yet to be confirmed are invited to join their peers on Wednesday evenings at 6pm. Class is one hour and parents are welcome. Thursday Evening Bible Study Begins September 7pm Modeled after the Wednesday morning Bible study, we will be gathering from now on every Thursday. To join? Bring a Bible, curiosity and a will to be inspired. The given format allows anyone and everyone to engage and find depth of meaning and relevance for faith and how it s applied to our everyday life. Come and see what it s like- All are welcomed!

Each year our little church has surpassed our goals, made and delivered many boxes for children to receive all over the world. Now is a great time to begin collecting items for the shoeboxes. Check out school supply sales, dollar stores and clearance sales. Please grab a flyer from the Narthex and put together a box with your family! Boxes will be assembled on Sunday, November 10th during Fellowship Hour.
