2 SUMMER RHYTHM In just a couple of weeks school will be out and the summer season will get into full swing. Striking a balance between being super busy and doing nothing over the summer can often be difficult for families. Hopefully, in the process of communicating expectations for the family, a good rhythm can unfold between busyness and rest. Lots of kids, as well as parents, come to the end of the school year completely exhausted. Sometimes a period is needed for everyone to rest and rejuvenate before launching fully into busy summer mode. But the reality of family life today is often that both parents are working, and therefore kids need to move quickly from school into summer activities. Some plans are already made for trips to visit family or just for fun, but how can we build a rhythm of both rest and fun into our summer days? First, rest. Let me be clear about this, rest is not the same as sleep. Some of you know this to be true. So, as you look at your summer calendar, make sure there are days on the calendar where there is nothing planned. There should be blank space on those days. In our busy world, it s important to have days where kids and parents don t have something to do. These days allow households to be spontaneous and creative in the absence of planned activity. Take a look at your calendar and make sure there are blank spaces. Second, keep a Sabbath rest. Whether the day falls on Sunday or another day of the week, we need to have one day when nothing gets accomplished. Sabbath reminds us that our relationship with God is not about what we can do for God, but that we are God s children and can rest in our relationship with him. If you do something on your Sabbath, stick to activities that are lifegiving and that remind or point family members toward their relationship with God. What will your summer rhythm look like? Time is precious, so why not sit down together and plan for blank space and Sabbath rest. Pastor Sue YOUR CHURCH STAFF COUNCIL MEMBERS President: Brenda Castellano V. The gathering lasts five days and each day is focused on a form of service. Each gathering also has a central theme; this year it is This Changes Everything. Each theme then focuses on a certain scripture verse from the Bible for this year it is Ephesians 2:8. In 2009, I was able to attend the National Youth Gathering as a student. That year it was held in New Orleans, which was still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. This event shaped my faith journey by showing me how a whole Church body of young adults can, and do come together in Christ every three years to help and discover an American city. Looking back I do not remember much about the scripture lessons or the fine details for every day, yet the theme for that year was clear, and it is still pulsating through my soul. Jesus, Justice, Jazz! Jesus was and is at the core of who we are. Justice was what we were doing in New Orleans. And Jazz was the amount of fun we all had helping our fellow citizens. This summer I get to co-lead an amazing group of young adults to Houston, a city not too far away from New Orleans. My hope for the young adults going on this journey is similar, don t try to remember every little detail or memorize the scripture verses. What I hope the other co-leaders and young adults going remember are the people they meet and help, the theme of our time down in Houston, and how this all relates back to Christ, our Savior and Lord. On behalf of all the participants going to Houston, I want to thank you ALL for supporting us. This journey down to Houston would not be possible without your love, support, and financial giving to Zion Lutheran. Please pray for safe travels and spiritual growth for all during our time down south. And remember: This Changes Everything. Craig Gauerke, Director of Congregational Ministry 3
4 COUNCIL PROFILE My name is Marge Redetzke and I ve been a member of Zion Lutheran Church my entire life. I am presently serving on the council as treasurer. My husband and I have four sons and five grandchildren. We have owned Redetzke Construction for 40 years and I continue to do the bookkeeping for the business. I feel it is a privilege and rewarding experience to serve on the church council and I m happy to do what I can to help with the day to day happenings of our church as we work to share God s good news with all people. CONFIRMATION CAMP NOTES TO PARENTS Camp this year will be at Pine Lake Camp near Waupaca. To find directions visit Crossways Camping Ministries website. Campers are asked to arrive at camp between 3:00-4:30 pm on Sunday, June 10 th. Families picking campers up on Friday, June 15 th are invited to a picnic lunch at 11:30 am and closing program at 12:15 pm. PASTORAL ACTS Pastor Sue officiated at the Baptisms of Greyson Wilke; Jenny Wilke and Chris Murphy; and the Funeral of Veronica Hirsch. BOOK OF THE MONTH JUNE/JULY: MARK/ PSALM Each day of the week read the same verses two times. Try different speeds of reading. What words stick out to you on Monday may be different on Friday. Think about the meaning in your life, and others around you. Enjoy! Fun Facts: Mark is focused on communicating the Gospel to readers who aren t familiar with Jewish texts or traditions. For example: there is no genealogy at the start, focuses on Roman times, and it explains Hebrew and Aramaic terms. Mark is my preferred Gospel. The key word in the Psalms is praise and it appears 200+ times compared with 129 occurrences in all the rest of Scripture combined. JUNE JULY 3rd Mark 1: st Psalm 30 10th Mark 2: th Psalm th Mark 4: th Psalm 84 24th Mark 11: nd Psalm 23 29th Psalm 147 Faith Formation Team Meeting June 5th 6:30PM - 7:30PM Anyone who has a passion for youth ministry programming is welcome to come.
