Shared at the conference and national levels, STC largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults. Strengthen the Church supports Youth at General Synod and Women's Ministries. In non-synod years, these contributions support regional and national youth events. The Women's magazine, Common Lot, is reaching more UCC women than ever and it's available by subscription or free online. You can find more information at Our congregation will receive this offering on Sunday, June 26th, or feel free to use the envelopes in your pew at any time during the month. From the Pastor Rev. Lori Miller-Price From Ducks to Dervishes to a Display! I love our church! One night we have a musical about the ugly duckling and two nights later we have the third of a five part series on the Three Faiths of the God of Abraham. A couple weeks later, our first public display advertising our church in the form of a billboard will be seen in Hikes Point! Honk, Jr. the musical was delightfully ducky! It really was a fun night! There were 16 of our children and youth who worked for months on the musical and lots of adults who helped make it happen. Special thanks to Kelly Childress who directed the show and to JR Cannaday who was the musical director. They both put in countless hours and it showed! The singing, the speaking parts, the stage and sets, the special effects, the snacks that tied in to the characters of the show and 115 people who showed up to support our kids! Wow! What a night! It is great to see our kids shine! Thank you all! I can t wait to see what you do next year! The program from the Salaam network on Judaism, Christianity and Islam has been so very interesting and well attended too! (In case you are wondering, dervishes are members of the Muslim community who have taken vows of poverty.) We have had speakers representing all three faiths a Christian seminary professor, a rabbi, a cantor, a Muslim feminist theologian who taught at U of L and there are more speakers to come! The last two nights of this series will be on Monday, June 4 and June 11 from 5:30 7:00. Each night is a stand alone event so no need to have attended the other nights to join in now! It is so exciting to have these events at our church and to see the community support it so well! Our own Diane Snowa is a member of the board of the Salaam Network and she has been a most integral part in making these events happen. Thank you Diane! The Salaam Network is an interfaith group committed to building bridges of understanding and harmony from a knowledge based foundation. Their mission statement is beautiful, it simply says this: Striving to make our beloved community of Louisville whole! And now a word about our new billboard! The communications team is excited to announce that on May 30 a billboard advertising St. Andrew UCC will go up by the Rally s on Breckinridge near Taylorsville Rd. 2 HEARTBEAT Page 2 From the Pastor: (continued from Page 1) I believe that our church is one of the best kept secrets in Louisville! The communication team has decided to take some of the money that we were going to use for more radio announcements and try something brand new a billboard that we hope will reach non-churched people who don t realize there is a church out there for them! Our UCC denomination has created more than 30 professionally done ads that churches across our country are using to let people know a little bit about who we are as a progressive denomination. By the way, we are thinking if this is successful, we may do another billboard and have a contest among our members to vote for the next one! Wouldn t that be fun! Now, here s a little bit about the thinking that went into the choice for our first billboard. We wanted a billboard that would not be our own personal first choice, but one that would get people s attention and let people know that all churches aren t the same. In a day and age where so many churches are preaching a world that is just 6000 years old, denying any scientific research that is contrary, many people are finding the church to be irrelevant. We want to let people know there are churches that don t have a problem with believing in God and science as compatible not contradictory. The sign will be up for a total of 4 weeks but it may not be 4 weeks in a row. The way that the company makes it affordable for churches is to offer a very low rate and having us agree to allow the billboard to come down and go back up one or more times depending upon bigger, higher paying companies who want our spot. As I said, it will be up for a total of 4 weeks but not sure if it will be 4 weeks in a row or not. The billboard goes up on May 30! Now, here s what the billboard will look like: First ever Summer Solstice Worship Service on June 21 at 7:00 p.m. In December we had our first Winter Solstice Service here at St. Andrew. Pastor Lori has done Winter Solstice services for quite a few years now but has never planned a Summer Solstice service. The response was so good to the winter solstice that the worship team and Lori are excited to be working on this service. There will be opportunities to focus on prayer for the growing season and for growth in our spiritual lives. We hope you will come experience it! 5 HEARTBEAT Page 5 Parish Health Ministry The challenge sounds simple: Eat five servings of fruit and/or vegetables five days a week, every week, for the entire school semester. Easy, right? That s what I thought when my kids brought home their Five For Five Challenge grids, with all those little boxes to check off. But when we examined what we actually consumed every day, we realized our diets needed some tweaking. And though there were days when it seemed we would need to count ketchup to meet the daily goal, we found ways to succeed. For instance: Swirl up a breakfast smoothie. Blend two bananas, two cups of fresh fruit, a carton of yogurt and a splash of juice to make two or three servings. Use frozen fruit or add ice if you want it super cold. Experiment! Spinach leaves and carrot juice pass almost undetected when added with strawberries or a lemon. (Honest!) Sauce up the sauce. Toss a little unexpected into the spaghetti sauce. (My kids have come to expect this!) Try chopped eggplant, carrots or zucchini. There are no rules especially with spaghetti sauce! Eat the Rainbow. Just say no to plates loaded with 50 shades of brown. (Nuggets, fries, meat and more meat, stuffing, etc ) Add color with mandarin oranges, cherries and pears in the salad, which could turn around reluctant greens eaters. Pop some frozen blueberries in the morning cereal. Slip a bag of cherry tomatoes into the lunchbox. Use loving deception. If your audience balks at all other attempts, go the route of Jessica Seinfeld. Yes, she s married to Jerry, the comedian, and no, she feels no shame in using stealth to pass off veggies on the unsuspecting.= I ve tried some of the recipes in Seinfeld s cookbook, Deceptively Delicious, with applause from the peanut gallery. But, I must confess, some of the recipes sound a little much for my tastes. (Banana Pudding Pie with cantaloupe and yellow squash, anyone?) My friend Virginia is a great believer in the old school adage of simply present it. Sort of a Field of Dreams plan for the dinner table: If you serve it, they will eat. But there s another big if here: If they are hungry enough. So keep them out of the snacks, and this plan might work! What are some steps you ve taken to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet? From the Library Parents and Grandparents The Easter Season is always a good time to read with your children and grandchildren about the church. Although church school teachers do a wonderful job, it is always important for your family to learn about the church together. We have two wonderful books in the library for children which can spread some special thoughts about what we all believe. The first is Learning About the Church by Felicity Henderson. Learning About the Church is a short book about God s family and followers of Jesus throughout the world. It is an ideal book which includes explanations of some of some sacraments of the church for young children. For somewhat older children, the book we offer is Come Worship With Me by Ruth Boling. It is colorful and beautifully illustrated and depicts the special celebrations of the church year. Since Pentecost is just a few weeks away when we commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples of Christ after the Resurrection of Jesus, it is a good time to discuss why we sometimes call it the birthday of the church. We like to be happy, wear red, and sing Happy Birthday to the church. This is very appealing and a happy time for children. Red balloons also may appear. Please help your family celebrate Pentecost by reading with them.
