1 Saint Andrew United Church of Christ The Heartbeat May Browns Lane Louisville, Kentucky Website: Phone: (502) Sunday School for all ages 9:15 AM; Sanctuary Worship 10:30 AM For more than 160 years, Bellewood Home for Children and Brooklawn Child & Family Services have worked separately to nurture thousands of Kentucky s most vulnerable children. In partnering to form Uspiritus, a non-profit organization for children, young adults, and families, we have combined our strengths to provide the highest quality of care for the children and families we serve. Benevolence for May: USPIRITUS As the oldest new kid on the block, we re helping children develop skills they need to grow and become independent adults. By combining our resources and knitting together our staff, services, systems, and schools, we have been able to improve the quality of services we provide to our youth and families. We provide a continuum of care that allows our children to move easily between services without disrupting established relationships. They are part of a large family now called Uspiritus. Our mission is restoring hope, instilling confidence, furthering education, encouraging spirituality and faith through a comprehensive continuum of care for vulnerable youth and families. For more information, please visit our website at From the Pastor Let s celebrate them as they choose to Confirm their faith! It hasn t happened (so I have been told) since 2012, but nine of our young and finest folk s at Saint Andrew United Church of Christ are scheduled to come forward to the Sanctuary Chancel to express their commitment to the Christian faith and desire to join our congregation as full members. They are: Colin Barth, Conor Barth, Autumn Bartley, Preston Childers, Kendall Childers, Stephanie Cox, Lauren Houser, Lauren Leong, and William Wicker. It has been my great honor to have served as their teacher and leader as we have explored and discussed together various aspects of our Christian faith and legacy. Our eight Saturday morning workshops, to date, have included our surveying the following topics: the nature of the Christian faith; the writings of the entire Bible (Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament); the meaning of Christmas and the Incarnation of Jesus as our Christ; Early and Later Church History (including a Brief History of Saint Andrew United Church of Christ ); and an understanding of the nature and polity of our parent denomination, the United Church of Christ. A final workshop, which will occur later in this month of May, will concern the subject of Confessing our Faith. 2 HEARTBEAT Page 2 From the Pastor... (Continued from page 1) The members of your Christian Education Team are most proud of our nine Confirmands and these team members invite you and your family and friends to share in the celebration of the Rite of Confirmation which will be observed on Sunday, May 31st during our regular 10:30 AM worship service. A reception to mark this occasion will occur following the ceremony. Come join us and show your support to those nine, new disciples who represent the very future of Saint Andrew United Church of Christ! Thomas G. Nordberg Best telephone: (cell) From your Worship and Music Team You may have noticed the new HDTV in the sanctuary. The Worship and Music Ministry Team has been exploring the issues regarding the purchasing of some type of screen in our Sanctuary for Power- Point and other media-based presentations like those you have been experiencing on recent Sunday mornings. It was suggested that we look at a more brilliant system such as a flat screen TV. Our Church Council Vice President, John Wicker, did the necessary and excellent research and brought to the Worship and Music Team various possible choices. The decision was made by the Team that a 75 diagonal Samsung 1080P unit should be purchased. Included in the price was a 3 year warranty. With the recommendation of our Team and the Church Council s unanimous approval, the television was purchased out of nonrestricted Memorial funds. For security and safety reasons, the new unit will be stored in a secured closet within the locked Church Office suite. We do hope that this technical enhancement will be beneficial to everyone, as we continue to approach the next chapter of our community s worshipful experience. The use of the HDTV for gatherings at Saint Andrew other than worship can be arranged through the Church Office ( ). Please allow at least one week s advanced notice. Thanks. News from the Library Greetings from the Library. Robert Schuller, a most interesting writer, died recently. In the library there are seven books written by him. His books can be found inside the library on the long table in front of the large window: Life s Not Fair, but God is Good How to Cope With Life s Unfair Obstacles Believe In the God Who Believes In You Prayer, My Soul s Adventure With God Don t Throw Away Tomorrow You may have read these books in the past and want to refresh your memory. The Oldest Book at Home Affair was a great success. Eleven people participated. Here are a few of the items shared: Susan Poppe brought a religious article in German from her mother. Linda Shere spoke about her starting a collection of memorabilia pertaining to her husband. The Beckemeyers brought a very old book. Louise Grant brought a 270 year old French cook book for hors d oeuvres. Barbara Schere brought an unusual folding book kept from her childhood. Tom Nordberg and Terry Burden spoke about books on their computers. The Whites brought in a large contribution of articles which included all sorts of items the most interesting were very tiny bibles for soldiers to keep in their pockets, and an old book about a very early World s Fair. Our newest books in the library can still be found on the library cart. On the bottom shelf there are magazines which can be taken, with no need to return them. Our next event will be in June. Watch for more information in next month s Heartbeat! 3 HEARTBEAT Page 3 From the Parish Nurse 7 Things You Need to Know About Head & Neck Cancers. Dr. Neal Dunlap. What are head and neck cancers? This would include the oral cavity, such as your gums, your tongue, the floor of your mouth, and the sides of your cheeks. Also, the back part of your throat, such as your tonsils, the base of the tongue and down into the voice-box area. We can screen all of those sites, Dunlap said....we encourage everybody to get screened. Memorials & Honoraria The lilies on the chancel for Easter were donated by these members and friends in honor or in memory of their loved ones as noted below: In Honor of... Our Parents, by Donna & John Block Don and Penny Wilding, by Donna & John Block Jennifer, Jonathan Barth, by Bill & Betsy Holton Brooke and Brett Holton, by Bill & Betsy Holton Love Ones, by Harlan & Ann Beckemeyer Loved Ones, by Barbara Voll & Debbie Clover In Memory of... Mid Bullard, by Mr. & Mrs. Hitt Robert Holton, by Bill & Betsy Holton Elizabeth and Tom Fort, by Judy Johnson Vicky and Cortney King, by Cindy & Mike Jones Tom Schwartz, by Scott Schwartz Helen Mathison, by David Sickbert Bill Mathison, by David Sickbert Bob Scheiterle, by Diane & Walter Snowa Bill Trusty, by Gerri Trusty Loved Ones, by Harlan & Ann Beckemeyer Loved Ones, by Jack & Betty Boeschel Loved Ones, by Mary Jane Glaser Loved Ones, by Debbie Clover & Barbara Voll How is screening done? It s a simple exam where we have some special mirrors to get a good look at the back of the throat, and do some feeling and looking. If anything suspicious is found, the person will be referred for further evaluation, and his or her primary care physician will be notified. These cancers tend to be diagnosed in more men than women and in people older than 50, according to the National Cancer Institute. What signs can we watch for? Mouth pain, loose teeth, trouble moving the tongue, a change (or hoarseness) in your voice, lumps in the neck, unusual bleeding and mouth sores that don t heal. Others can be found at Are smokers and drinkers the only ones at risk? Unfortunately, what we re finding is now there s a lot of people that don t smoke and drink who are getting head and neck cancers, mostly because of the rise of a virus called HPV. How are they picking up the virus? It s usually sexually transmitted, such as through oral sex, Dunlap said. What s the benefit of screening? Early detection is always the key, so the earlier we can detect it, the better treatment we have, Dunlap said. Depending on the type of cancer, cure rates can be as high as percent, but some cancers have a cure rate of only about 50 percent, depending on the location and how advanced the disease is. Any prevention advice? No. 1, stop smoking. Don t do chewing tobacco, and then have your primary care physician or doctor do an oral screen on you at least once a year, said Dunlap. Dentists can check you as well.
