AUGUST BENEVOLENCE: House of Ruth House of Ruth is an association of persons caring for men, women and families affected by HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS has the ability to shatter not only the lives of individuals, but also their families. Such destruction impacts the entire community. Many HIV/AIDS-infected/ affected individuals often feel lonely, isolated, desperate and hopeless. Through a variety of services and programs, House of Ruth helps alleviate these feelings by mending the shattered lives and offering hope and a helping hand. House of Ruth owns seventeen scattered-site permanent housing rental units. The housing programs give approximately eighty clients the opportunity for safe, affordable housing through subsidized rent and intense case management. The Children s Program at House of Ruth provides extensive services for children (ages 0-17 or in High School) both infected with and affected by HIV and AIDS. 5 HEARTBEAT Page 5 Parish Health Ministry FROM FAITH & HEALTH MINISTRY NURSES: Summer's here and the living is easy... Yes, it is Summer. but living won't be easy if we don't follow some simple rules to have a safe and happy season! Below are just a few ways to stay happy and healthy this wonderful time of the year! 1. Vacations: Aw who doesn't love to go on Vaca? We all do! But we need to be safe, so make sure you buckle up! And be sure your babies/children are in approved and safe car seats. Don't text and drive of course! Take frequent breaks while driving, and be sure to get out and stretch those muscles every couple of hours. If you have children with you, I am sure they will have to stop for potty breaks and food frequently, but if not, you still need to stop and stretch take a break that Ocean or Mountain will be there when you get there! Do not leave your children or your fur-babies in your car while you run into the store to get something, etc. The temperature of a car can reach 120 degrees or more even with the windows cracked. Please be aware! 2. Water Safety: Don't swim alone always have a buddy with you. Wear life jackets if not a good swimmer. Even if you are, it's a good idea to wear one when out on the lake or ocean. Wear sunscreen and reapply frequently. Drink lots of water avoid alcohol, as this dehydrates you even more. Wear sunglasses and a hat to keep the sun off. Learn to swim if you don't know how. If you have children, make sure you watch them carefully in and around any body of water. Drowning is the number 5 cause of unintentional death in the United States. My Mom used to tell me you can drown in a cup of water, and she was right! So please be alert and careful! 3. Working outside: We all love to work in our gardens, and most of us have to cut our grass, so be safe and smart. Wear shorts and short sleeved shirts with comfortable shoes. Wear light colors and clothes you can breath in not tight fitting. Wear sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. Drink plenty of fluids, and take frequent breaks inside where there is air conditioning. You don't want to have a heat stroke! Even if the weather person says it is 80 degrees, you can still get sun burned and dehydrated. Be aware. 4. Insects!: Yuck I hate bugs,.but they do have their job in this wonderful world. Just be careful when outside. Wear some type of bug spray if you are going to be out for long periods of time. Bees really love the smell of perfume, so avoid this unless you want to be buddies with them. Mosquitoes and other insects love to party at dawn and dusk, so avoid those times if you can so they can party alone without having you as their appetizer. Also check your pets for bugs--i had to pull a tick off of my dog Benjie the other day...yuck! 5. Picnics: We all love picnics, but we don't love food poisoning. Keep your hot food hot, and your cold food cold. Hot needs to be above 140 degrees, and cold below 40 degrees. Use your coolers! If in doubt, throw it out. You don't want to be sick for 24 hours or more from eating potato salad that has been outside too long. These are just a few suggestions to have a safe and happy Summer! Have a wonderful time where ever you may go! Summer's here... the time is right for Dancing in the Streets! (just avoid the traffic) Peace! Elaine and your other Parish Nurses Cheryl, Debbie, and Jennifer all ready for our VACAS! From the Library Summer is a wonderful time for reading and relaxation. We invite you to visit the library and browse through our many reading opportunities. Recently, David Sickbert donated a favorite book to the library. The title of the book is The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer written by Michael Van Dyke. Bonhoeffer was a theologian, a pastor, a teacher, and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He was born in Germany in 1934 and lived in Germany until his adulthood. He was one of the most brilliant minds in the 20 th century and during World War II joined the resistance to the dictator, Adolph Hitler. After his arrest, he was in prison and wrote on spiritual issues suggesting that Hitler was not a follower of Christ. He paid for his spiritual belief when he was hanged in April of We have some of his writings in the library. This biography is a short book of easy reading but is faith building. We recommend it. His own writings are longer with more depth but worthwhile. Other books that may spike your interest include: Making Our Own Fun In The Good Old Days Editors: Ken and Janice Tate A Children s Book; C Is For Cooking-Recipes From Sesame Street The Dash Diet-Best Diet Overall Marla Heller, MS, RD, The Librarians
