1 Saint Andrew United Church of Christ The Heartbeat September Browns Lane Louisville, Kentucky Website: Phone: (502) Sunday School for all ages 9:15 AM; Sanctuary Worship 10:30 AM Our Benevolence Focus: Neighbors in Need Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of this offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to UCC churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. This year, special consideration will be given to projects focusing on serving our immigrant neighbors and communities. From the Pastor On September 9, we will begin a new beautiful worship series that is called God is Holding Your Life and it will focus on the Old Testament Psalms. The Psalms are the prayers of the Hebrew people and run the gamut from praise to gut-wrenching pleas for help. Throughout this poetry runs a thread we can trust God to hold our lives. In this series, we take a break from the worry, anxiety and distress that life can bring and let Holy Assurance hold us fast. The six week series will include the following: Week 1 God is Holding Your Life The Lord will protect you on your journeys whether going or coming from now until forever from now. Week 2: Surely Goodness and Mercy Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger because you are with me. Your rod and your staff they protect me. It will never crumble. God will help it when morning dawns. Week 6: God s Love Endures Forever Give thanks to the Lord because God is good. God s faithful love lasts forever! Give thanks to the one who shaped the earth on the water God s faithful love lasts forever. Give thanks to the one who split the Red Sea in two God s faithful love lasts forever. * * * In other news, please save the date for the Louisville Pride Festival on September 15. We will have a booth once again and it is a wonderful opportunity for you to help spread the news of God s grace for all to our community just through our presence! I m going to start attending the beginners class of Tai Chi and would love for some of you to join me! As you may know, the Tai Chi classes have been going on in our gym for quite a few months now. The next beginner class will start on September 12 at 10:00 a.m. Come check it out with me! We are going to have another student pastor from the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary this again this year! I m excited to tell you all that the seminary was very happy with the experience that Abby Embry had with us and they approached us about hosting another student. He is also seeking ordination in the United Church of Christ. He will be starting on September 9 and here is a little bit more about him: Mark Your Calendars Now Philip Gulley is coming to St. Andrew on October 15 so mark your calendars now and start telling your friends! Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writer, and speaker from Danville, Indiana. Gulley has written 21 books, including the Harmony series recounting life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana and the best-selling Porch Talk essay series. Gulley s memoir, I Love You, Miss Huddleston: And Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood, was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. In addition, Gulley, with coauthor James Mulholland, shared their progressive spirituality in the books If Grace Is True and If God Is Love, followed by Gulley s books If the Church Were Chris an and The Evolu on of Faith. Phil s new book, Unlearning God, How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe will be released in September right before he comes to speak at St. Andrew. The community will be invited to the event and you won t want to miss it! Many of Phil s books are available in our church library so please check them out literally! I have heard Phil speak several times and read many of his books. He is also a very dear friend of mine from seminary and I know you will enjoy the evening with him! Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Student and group rates available. Online tickets available at Kyle Reaka is a third year Master of Divinity student at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Originally from Freeburg, Illinois (a bedroom community of Saint Louis, Missouri), Kyle graduated Summa Cum Laude from Murray State University in 2016 with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Spanish. Kyle is a recent convert to the UCC, having joined officially in He looks forward to his year long tenure serving as the student pastor here at St. Andrew, and knows that it will be a wonderful year of learning, serving, and growing while doing the work of God. He thanks you profusely for having him here, and looks forward to getting to know you all better! Join Pastor Lori in this meaningful mentor training. Mission Behind Bars and Beyond needs trained mentors to work in a small group with men and women who are incarcerated and will be released into our community. The next training is Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Talk to Lori for details! Yes, believe it or not, it's time for that one second pinch that could possibly save your life. In the United States, Flu shots are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. That is just about everyone here at St. Andrew if my calculations are correct! The Flu can be a very serious illness, especially in young kids, adults over 65, people with other health problems, and pregnant women. Again, that is a large majority of our Parishioners. The Flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your family and friends from the Flu. Health officials recommend people get their Flu shot in early Fall, preferably by the end of October. Flu activity usually peaks in January or February. It normally takes about 2 weeks for the Flu shot to get into your system and build up your immunity. Last year was a record breaker with many cases of the Flu and hospitalizations all across the nation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 12,000 to 56,000 death each year are due to the Flu. Symptoms of the Flu include: Fever or feeling feverish with chills, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle and body aches, headaches, and fatigue. You can go to your Doctor's office, favorite Pharmacy, and even the grocery (Little Clinic-Kroger) to get your Flu shot. So don't be a CHICKEN! Go get your Flu shot so you won't miss out on any of our fun Fall activities here at St. Andrew! I am getting mine soon (and I hate shots). Good health and Blessings to all of you! One of your needle chicken Parish Nurses From the Louise Grant Library... Soon the seasons will be changing and we may be spending more time inside our houses. We would like to invite you to the church library to check out some books in which you may have interest. We have numerous titles including fiction, and true stories of people you may wish to know. We also have many books which concern the church and what we believe as Christians that are inspirational and life changing. We have a number of books by Pastor Philip Gulley and his life as a Quaker pastor in northern Indiana. He is a very caring person, his stories are often humorous and easy to read, and his churches seem to love him. He is a personal friend of our Pastor Lori and will be visiting our church in October. Do not forget and miss that date. We are looking forward to his visit and hearing about his new book published. The children at St. Andrew have a whole section of books which have been added throughout the years and are ready for check out for those interested. There are easy reading books for young children and more adultlike books for teens. Adults can spend a year of reading books and learning what we believe as Christians and how we are to live out our faith. There is a wealth of information in that part of the library. Please join our readers. The librarians are organizing the book section of our yard sale. Do not miss the books and tapes etc., all at reasonable prices. Remember the library is open every Friday from 9 AM until noon and on Sunday before and after the worship service. Books on the book stand in front of the library may be checked out there. The Louisville Pride Foundation is proud to announce the 4th Annual Louisville Pride Festival, a celebration of the spirit of Louisville coming together as one. The 2018 Louisville Pride Festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 15, 2017 on Bardstown Road in the Highlands neighborhood. The event is all ages, family friendly, free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the entrances.

6 HEARTBEAT The Good Samaritan Fund As most church members know the Good Samaritan Fund was created to help those church members who fall on hard times and need financial help. This year we have had a number of requests and our available funds have diminished. We again are asking for your help and reminding you that we collect the first Sunday of every month at the Sanctuary doors. Envelopes will also be available in the pews every Sunday and you may use those envelopes any Sunday and place them in the offering plate and they will be given to the Good Sam Fund.
