Detroit Street, Los Angeles, CA Telephone (323) Fax (323) parish@cathedralchapel.org Website: Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven-sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. I am the bread of life (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. All Are Welcome! 2 A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC WEEK OF AUG SAINTS, SPECIAL OBSERVANCES, MASS INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS Be imitators of god, as beloved children, and live in love (Eph. 4) Dear Parishioners and Visitors: I pray that you are well during these summer weeks with friends and families. There are just 2 to 3 weeks left before Labor Day weekend. Participating in the Year of Consecrated Life -Assisting the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet As you know, this year our universal church celebrates and honors all religious brothers and sisters for their services to the world. As a parish, some members of our PLC had called several local religious communities to see what we can do to honor them. As a result, we are seeking your support for our local sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in re-upholstering their chairs in the chapel of their community. This is our third week that we have announced after each mass asking you to give $55 per chair. There are approximately chairs that the community would need. I am thankful for a number of you who have responded to the announcement so generously. Be Imitators of God & Live in Love The scriptural readings for this Sunday continue to focus on Jesus as the Bread of Life and encourage us to strengthen our faith. We are called not to give up so easily in the midst of life s challenges. Elijah is the example for us not to give up but to be open to God by accepting food for our journey of life and faith. In a more practical way, St. Paul is inviting us to be imitators of God and to live in love. Vision and Courage Nobel Peace Price Winners or Laureates Last week, I presented a question to reflect: What can I do or what can we do to make this world a better place? Finding ways to build and improve our local communities is important. As Catholic Christians, we are called to focus on doing the will of God. What can we do to accomplish the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent. Making our world a better place is this an ideal phrase or a reality of life. Geir Lundestad, the Director of the Nobel Institute and Nobel Peace Prize for more than 20 years, would say that this phrase is a reality because of a few special people. He summarized in 2011 in an interview and said that the two common values or virtues shared by all are vision and courage. Their vision allows them to identify their work and mission to make their local communities and their country a better place. Their courage helps them to overcome the fear of imprisonment, isolation, and death. In 2011, three were chosen and received the Nobel Peace Prize for women's rights and peace building effort: 1)Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman President of Liberia; she said If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough. 2)Leymah Gbowee, an author and Liberian peace activist. 3)Tawakkol Karman, a journalist and peace activist from Yemen. As Catholic Christians, what can I do to make this place a better world? St. Paul invites us That you should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, created in God s way in righteousness and holiness of truth. (Eph. 4) As you are on vacation during the summer weeks, please make it a priority to attend Sunday mass. Be informed, be interested, and be involved in our Catholic faith. Father Junípero had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At age 36, he arrived in Veracruz and traveled by foot to Mexico City to dedicate his mission vocation at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe; there he asked her for the grace to open the hearts of the colonizers and indigenous peoples. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated in most of the missions. Since then, Our Lady of Guadalupe has become the Patroness of the whole American continent. 5. 6. In 1767 Father Junípero Serra was sent to Loreto, Baja California as the President of the Baja California Missions. Father Palou and Father Crespí were also assigned to these missions. La Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó is the first Jesuit mission founded in Baja California in 1697 and the beginning of the El Camino Real. 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAMS Our parish offers Religious Education classes to all children and young people who attend public schools. Attending weekly Mass in conjunction with Religious Education classes, is an important part of your family s faith formation. Registration is now open. WAKE UP THE WORLD BY SPONSORING A CHAIR During this Year of Consecrated Life, different parishes and religious communities are celebrating by way of sharing who they are, what they do, and how they live. Here at Cathedral Chapel, we are giving you, our parishioners, a practical and convenient opportunity to show your appreciation of the work performed by one of the religious communities in our area The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ) - Los Angeles Province. At their nearby house in Koreatown, the 35 side-chairs (see photo) that are used daily in their chapel for religious services and group meetings are in need of new fabric. A re-upholsterer has agreed to do the job for $55 per chair. Many of you may have been taught by, cared for, or helped in other ways by these Sisters. Please consider sponsoring the cost to repair one (or more) of these chairs as thanks for the contribution these sisters made in the Los Angeles community in health care, teaching, and service to the poor. Make your checks payable to Cathedral Chapel and write "CSJ chairs" in the memo line for the offertory collection, or mail your contribution directly to the parish office. Thank you for your generosity. To learn about CSJ, please visit csjla.org. more Mark you calendars for our Annual Summer Fun Parish Picnic!
