Bishop Edward Wm. Clark CATHEDRAL CHAPEL SCHOOL Elementary School, Grades K-8th 755 S. Cochran Ave., L.A. CA T: (323) ; F: (323) Tina Kipp, Principal "See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. "The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight -- indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. "But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fuller's soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. "Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years." REFLECTION (Reader) Christmas is intended to be a transforming event, not a lovely interlude in business as usual. What we do in Advent in preparation for Christmas will be our means of getting ready for a new way of looking at life, a new way of living. The Prophet Malachi speaks of a messenger: one who will prepare the way of the Lord, one who reminds us of the covenant of God, one who refines and purifies us in faithfulness. How then do we prepare to be transformed by the coming of the Lord? If we prepare ourselves by renewing our covenant with God, then we will be truly transformed as Christ comes again into our lives CANDLE LIGHTING LITURGY (All) (Pause) HERE INSTALL THE 1ST ADVENT CANDLE. (Please wait until the candle has been lit before reading below.) See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, says the Lord of hosts. The light of hope has awakened our spirits. A voice cries out in the wilderness, "Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Renew in us your covenant, O God, that we may be ready for the dawn of your salvation. We light a second candle to bring light to every darkness, and to guide us in the way of peace. (Pause) HERE INSTALL THE 2ND ADVENT CANDLE. (Please wait until the candle has been lit before reading below.) With gratitude for your light, O God, we will prepare to welcome a new birth of your love.
2 HONOR OUR PAST! ENVISION THE FUTURE! Mary Hickey s 100th Birthday Celebration Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Welcome to our parish during this second week of advent Eucharistic celebration.. As God s children, we are gathered here to worship God. May your time of prayer bring to solace and peace. The season of Advent is a period of reconciliation and renewal of our relationship with God and with our loved ones Christmas Dinner and Fundraising Event Last Friday, with exquisite food and lively music, a number of us as guests, benefactors, and parishioners gathered at the Wilshire Country Club to celebrate our Annual Christmas fundraising dinner as guests, benefactors, and parishioners. Be fervent is spirit, serve the Lord (Rm. 12:11). Dr. Hoen and Mr. Wilnek exemplify who they are as active Catholics serving the Lord at CCSV for so many years. As a retired doctor, and a former member of the school board, Dr. Hoen attends regularly the 12PM Sunday mass and serves as lector. As a graduate of CCS, the class of 1949, a current member of the school board, and a regular usher at the 8 AM Sunday mass, Mr. Wilnek has been one of the stable supporters of our parish. As a parish we honored them as this year recipients of CCSV LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. They are true models of perseverance in the faith, active in the life and ministry of our parish. Gratitude to Planning Committees and Volunteers I am thankful for all your support to this evening s gathering. The proceeds will help the church to renovate the kitchen rectory and laundry room. The estimated cost could be in the range from $25K to $35K. I am grateful to our 2016 Christmas dinner executive planning members (Cristy Wilkins, Gary Herman, and Victor Benedicto), committee members, volunteers, and parish staff. I am grateful to all our donors who quietly sponsored many of our raffle prizes and the twelve days of Christmas ranging from $100 to $1000. Finally, I am appreciative of our table captains for inviting members of your family, guests, and benefactors to dine at your tables. The success of the event depends on your effort. The success of this event involves many weeks of planning, promoting, and executing by our executive planning members, committee members, parish staff and volunteers. First Sunday of Advent Reflection ~ To Come To: Listen and Observe Ad-venire in Latin is to come to. To come to Jesus and to members of our families and friends may signal certain emotions of readiness or resistance in us. The scriptures last Sunday remind us that this journey of coming to God to occur in two ways: 1) To listen to the Word of God. Come, let us climb the LORD s mountain...that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths (Is. 2). 2) To observe all the changes that surround us. Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come (Mt. 24). PASTOR S PRAYER REQUESTS BISHOP EDWARD CLARK S BIRTHDAY - SUNDAY 12/11 AT 12PM MASS & RECEPTION ~ This past Wednesday (11/30) Bishop Clark celebrated a mile stone on this birthday. We are blessed to have him in residence of our parish. May God keep him safe and strong throughout the new year. Please come and join our parish to celebrate Bishop Clark s Birthday. MARY HICKEY S 100 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION ~ Last Tuesday (11/29), I was able to join Mary s family to celebrate a surprised luncheon 100th birthday for Mary at the Wilshire Country Club. Mary has been our parishioiner since the 1920s. Mary is in good health and alert. WEDDING CELEBRATION - CHRISTINA HERMAN-SARWIN AND PETER SARWIN ~ Yesterday (Saturday 12/3), together with the Herman s families, I celebrate the wedding of Christina and Peter at our church. Christina is the granddaughter of Beverly and Gary Herman. 4. RECOVERY OF HEALTH: BILLY JENKINS Billy faithfully attends our 8AM Sunday mass with her husband, Rudy Jenkins, who is our long time and dedicated usher. Please continue to pray for both of them. 3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Second Sunday of Advent Don't we all, when asked what we want for Christmas, at some time or another answer, "World peace?" As we look at our world, we still see the ongoing refugee crisis and the problem of desperate people immigrating to our country illegally. We see the ongoing war and the horror of bombing and starvation in the Middle East, and the attacks of terrorists in formerly "safe" Western countries, including our own. Don't we wish it would all stop? We can take some comfort in today's readings, for in them is the promise of God's justice and care for the poor and the downtrodden. There is the promise of justice meted out to those who do evil, and the future vision of the Peaceable Kingdom, where all are safe and cared for. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WITH A LITTLE CHILD TO GUIDE THEM The words of peace and salvation are here in this time of Advent. Jews and Gentiles alike will glorify God for the mercy that God has shown. Those who are oppressed shall find hope and love. "For [God] shall rescue the poor when he cries out, / and the afflicted when he has no one to help... / [God] shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; / the lives of the poor [God] shall save" (Psalm 72:12-13). The poor have hope in God, while the wicked who oppress them should fear God's judgment. "[God] shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, / and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked." And, "[God] shall judge the poor with justice, / and decide aright for the land's afflicted" (Isaiah 11:4). Yes, this Advent season we await the coming of a little child who will be the savior of the world. "May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another...that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 15:5-6). Today's Readings: Is 11:1-10; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Rom 15:4-9; Mt 3:1-12 Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. THE MERCY FUND In the spirit of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Archbishop Gomez has created The Mercy Fund to help breathe new life and greater sustainability into a few of the most compelling mercy ministries the Archdiocese sponsors; the Office of Restora ve Jus ce, which provides comfort, healing and hope to over 120,000 people each year, including both prisoners and vic ms as well as their families; and our Hospital Ministries, which ministers to the sick and dying at the 12 Catholic Hospitals and 9 Catholic Senior Care facili es throughout the Archdiocese. Both of these mercy ministries work with people when they are suffering and vulnerable, to bring them the healing love of God. We encourage our parishioners to consider making an online gi to the Mercy Fund and or any other Archdiocesan or parish ministry.
