2 The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe HAPPY EARLY THANKSGIVING Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Welcome to our parish during this weekend Eucharistic celebration on the solemnity of Christ the King. As baptized Catholic Christians, we are gathered here to worship God. May you find our church as a place of solace and peace. The Solemnity of Christ the King marks the end of this liturgical year C of the Gospel of Luke. We come to know the life of Christ through the eyes of Luke and his community. Christ is our compassionate and caring God who is attentive to all especially those who have been considered unclean, outcast, and sinful by society. CONCLUSION TO THE YEAR OF MERCY Last year on December 8th, Pope Francis started the celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The occasion also signified the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. Pope Francis encouraged all of us as Catholics to encounter and experience mercy, forgiveness, reconciliation, and works of charity. He came up with two creative ways to allow everyone to personally connect with God and renew their faith. 1) The Door of Mercy: For the first time, besides the opening of the seven Holy Doors, Pope Francis established temporarily the Doors of Mercy throughout the selected churches in each diocese. This Sunday, all the Holy Doors and the Doors of Mercy will be closed. 2) Missionary of Mercy: Pope Francis chose priests mostly religious order priests from all over the world and blessed them at the Vatican and sent them back to their local dioceses. They become the instrument of God s mercy through the sacrament of penance and pardon God s People from certain grave sins SUNDAY ANNUAL OFFERING OR TITHING TO CCSV Increase your giving in the range of $21- $50 per week Average Weekly Sunday Offering in 2015 = $5, Break even point - Average Weekly Operating Expenses = $ Our goal is seeking for an increase of 2% this fiscal year ($2-$7 per week) I encourage you to respond generously to your faith in God and express that gratitude by supporting the ministries of our church and the mission of Christ. Your Sunday or annual financial offering is vital to keep our church opens and maintains the upkeep of our properties. THE CULTURE OF HOPE AND NOT THE CULTURE OF FEAR The scripture readings last Sunday capture the sentiments of our nations after the election especially the Presidency. As God s People, we are people of hopes believing in God s providential care and mercy. Jesus is the foundation of our faith and the companion of journey. We should not be afraid and should not allow the culture of fears to paralyze us. For you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays (Malachi 3). God s justice is the source of our healing and strength. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus said For I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute...by your perseverance you will secure your lives (Lk. 21). God s wisdom and our perseverance will help us to live and promote the culture of hopes. PASTOR S URGENT PRAYER REQUESTS Wedding Celebration: Mary E. Powell & Kahlil R. Allen Please join me in congratulating Mr. James and Mrs. Beverly Powell for the wedding of their daughter Mary this Saturday (11/19). May God bless Mary and Kahlil with love and understanding as they begin their life together as husband and wife. Wedding Celebration (Convalidation): Gabrielle Ibarrola Craft & Tyler Craft Please join me in congratulating Mr. Gig and Gina Ibarrola for the wedding of their daughter Gabrielle this coming Thanksgiving Thursday (11/24) at our church. Both Gabrielle and Tyler are catechists in our confirmation program. Gabrielle is currently a teacher assistant for first grade at our school. May God bless Gabrielle and Tyler with joy, happiness and peace for the rest of their life. Please continue to pray for the eternal rest of the Souls of Jennifer Moon Kelly Davern and Connie Herman. The 2016 election is over, but the unrest and the divisions among family members and citizens and non-citizens continue. Please pray for unity and peace throughout our nation as we honor and respect the election results. Let us pray for all the newly and current elected officials to hold firm to the integrity of their office. May they legislate laws with respect for human life from the beginning of birth to the end of life. May you have a blessed upcoming Thanksgiving weekend with families and friends. May all your travels whether local or outside of California be safe and may your celebrations be filled with laughter and peace. 3 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Today we honor Christ the King not only as our shepherd but as our "bone" and "flesh" as well; we belong to him as his own body (First Reading). And today we praise Christ as God's "beloved," the "image of the invisible God, firstborn of all creation," and the "head of the body, the church" (Second Reading). In the Gospel, Jesus is derided by the Roman soldiers as "King of the Jews," yet shows himself to be the king of mercy when he encounters the repentant thief. Indeed, this "beloved Son, the King of the universe" (Collect) reconciles the human race (Prayer over the Offerings) and humbles himself even to become "the food of immortality" (Prayer after Communion). No wonder we dream of such a king. Today's liturgy, then, offers a marvelous opportunity to explore the mystery of Christ's rule, one marked by humility, service, and mercy. Our prayers should seek such gifts for not only our earthly leaders but for us as well. Liturgy.com Jubilee Year of Mercy ~ November 20, 2016 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Jubilee Year Ends Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus' "royal portrait" is the cross. From this "throne," the crucified "crown prince" welcomes by "executive pardon" the kingdom of mercy's first citizen, a fellow criminal. The "Good Thief" requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: "Remember me when..." (Luke 23:42). "Today you will be with me," King Jesus promises, "in paradise." (23:43). Paradise, even for nonbelievers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we "good thieves" beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus' kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus' returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus' mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy. Peter Scagnelli, (c) JSPaluch Co., Inc. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING O God, of Whose mercies there is no number, and of Whose goodness the treasure is infinite; we render thanks to Your most gracious majesty for the gifts You have bestowed upon us, evermore beseeching Your clemency, that as You grant the petitions of them that ask You, You will never forsake them, but will prepare for the reward to come. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Cathedral Chapel Give Thanks to YOU! We know that generosity the giving of a gi means thinking more about others than about ourselves. It represents an act of love. But so does being thankful and grateful. To give thanks is to extend ourselves and to truly remember where the gi came from. The efforts of many volunteers and donors are what drives our parish to thrive and prosper. On this Thanksgiving Day we would like to thank all Cathedral Chapel parishioners, friends and especially all our donors and volunteers who have given so generously of their me, talents & treasures all these years. May we as a parish con nue to show our deep love for one another and for the God who so generously makes these possible. On this Thanksgiving Day wherever we find ourselves let us stop to offer Grace and gra tude. May this day be a reminder to be generous with others as God is with us. Let us turn our hearts to Him and give thanks for whatever gi He gives us. Thanks for what we have, and thanks for what we have been given. Thank You All For Your Generosity & God Bless!
