May 20,2018 Acts 2: corinthians 12:3b-7, John 20:19-23 Stewardship Reflection for Pentecost Sunday May 19/20: Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the Church and the beginning of its mission in the world. Pentecost Sunday reminds us that our lives are filled with the Holy Spirit and God has accomplished creative things in us through this gift. We have been entrusted with this great gift of the Holy Spirit. Now is a good time to ask: Are we being good stewards of this gift? What creative things have we done to glorify God s accomplishments in us? Monthly Food Collection next weekend May 26/27 Donations to food pantries and food banks throughout New Jersey are down 30 percent, while requests for food have increased 20 percent. Reflecting these trends, demand for food is rising dramatically and shelves are emptying quickly at the 75 food pantries served by Catholic Charities Emergency Food and Nutrition Network. Now more than ever, EFNN needs your support. Donations help feed the most vulnerable and helpless among us the working poor, senior citizens, children living in poverty and families struggling to make ends meet. Last year, EFNN provided food for more than 50,000 hungry men, women and children. Your help can put food on the table and bring hope back into the lives of our brothers and sisters facing difficult times. 9 Pentecost and Missionary Discipleship Today, the Church celebrates the great feast of Pentecost! As recounted in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, Pentecost occurred when the followers of Jesus were clustered together in a room and were suddenly surprised overtaken is not too strong a word by the dynamic presence of the Holy Spirit in their midst. Strong wind and flame seemed to sweep the room, and the Apostles were so filled with the gifts of the Spirit that they emerged to speak in multiple languages to the throngs who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate a Jewish festival. In our secular culture, Pentecost goes largely unobserved. Pentecost cards don t pop up on store shelves weeks in advance, and there s no merchandising that remotely compares to Easter and Christmas. Yet make no mistake. To Christians, Pentecost is a great celebration, sometimes called the birthday of the Church. The word Pentecost has its roots in the Greek word for fifty; Pentecost comes fifty days after the Resurrection. Why was Pentecost such a watershed event in the life of the Church? As Christian stewards, we know we are called to be missionary disciples. This calling has its roots in the momentous events of Pentecost. Up until that time, the followers of Jesus were still a somewhat disorganized band of believers, still in shock over the events of the crucifixion, still confused about the meaning of the sightings of the Risen Lord. Pentecost abruptly and forever changed that. Suddenly, missionary disciples were born, followers both called and sent forth. Like us, they were called together, in community. They became aware that their great mission was to reach, not just their Jewish brothers and sisters in Palestine, but the disparate crowds who visited Jerusalem and beyond. Like us, they were called to bring Jesus to the world. The Holy Spirit brought courage to replace fear, understanding to replace confusion, faith to replace doubt. The same Holy Spirit moves in our own lives, perhaps not always with the drama of that first Pentecost, but with the same grace. The Spirit calls us within our Church community to share Jesus with others, just as the disciples were called. 10 Stewardship Day of Service Many parishioners gathered for a morning of service to assist organizations who serve victims of human trafficking. The event started with a very insightful presentation led by Kate Lee, Short Hills resident and member of the NJ Coalition Against Human Trafficking. Participants then moved through a series of activities preparing various items for human trafficking victims, for awareness and to raise funds. These activities included preparing emergency backpacks filled with basic necessities which are given to those who are rescued from trafficking situations. Over 1000 bars of soap were labeled with a hotline phone number to aide victims to get help. These bars are distributed through a network of hotels in the state. We created an awareness banner, which now hangs on the fence on Short Hills Avenue. Other volunteers helped create and package items for our bake sale which took place at all the weekend Masses. Finally we created over 200 awareness bracelets which were sold at the sale too. At the sale we distributed educational materials on the issue of human trafficking. We are so grateful to Deacon David Hughes and Mrs. Tracy Ricciardi who spearheaded this year s event. Thank you to all those who supported us. Working together we made an incredible difference!

12 Cardinal Tobin at Congregation B Nai Jeshurun On May 2, Congregation B'nai Jeshurun invited the community to an evening with Cardinal Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, who spoke about the Culture of Encounter: How Pope Francis helps the dialogue between Christians and Jews. Following his remarks, Senior Rabbi, Matthew D. Gewirtz led a spirited question and answer session with those gathered. At the conclusion of the event, Cardinal Tobin, posed for pictures with members of the parish who were in attendance.

13 May Procession A large number of parishioners gathered on May 7th for the annual May Procession and Crowning of the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. When the Church focus on its image of Mary it fosters a renewed devotion to Mary. The St. Rose music ministers led a musical tribute to Mary, Mother of God as a prelude to procession of parish organizations and Liturgy of the Word. Rev. Bowie Snodgrass, Associate rector of Christ Church in Short Hills gave a reflection on the roll of Mary in the life of a Christian. The Marian Court was comprised of some of our graduating high school seniors and two First Eucharist students. Special emphasis was focused on the new memorial, proclaimed by Pope Francis, to honor Mary as Mother of the Church.

16 Feast of the Ascension of the Lord At the 9:00am Mass, on the Feast of the Ascension, the SRL Academy community and parishioners gathered in prayer and celebration of our second grade students. Following communion the students performed the song Lord, I lift Your name on high It was a beautiful celebration.

St Rose of Lima Cemetery Spaces Available Planning your cemetery arrangements in advance will allow a family to carefully consider all of the options available to them in a thoughtful and considerate manner. By planning ahead, you ensure that your wishes are known and carried out. Over the summer and fall, we constructed a new wall, cleared and fenced an area for additional ground burials in our cemetery. In addition, we also have availability in our mausoleum. Clergy, therefore, are welcome but must know beforehand, who is currently being treated in a hospital or other healthcare facility. Therefore, please notify us when a member of your family is currently or shortly will be hospitalized or in another healthcare facility so that we can be a familiar presence to them during their stay in a local hospital, rehab center or nursing home. 22 Last week on a beautiful, sunny day SRLA held its first annual Walk-A-Thon, in the parking lot, to raise funds. We had a DJ to keep us motivated as we walked and danced our way towards our goal. Due to overwhelming support, the students were able to raise an incredible amount of money, which will be used to beautify and enhance our playground.
