1 THE WINDOW Claremont United Methodist Church April 19, 2017 CUMC S Reconciling Committee invites YOU! Sunday, April 23, Round Building 11:00 a.m. Luncheon and Presentation: HIV in the Inland Empire Facts, Stories, and What You Can Do to Help Speaker: Laura Silvius, Foothill AIDS Project, Claremont Laura Silvius, of Foothill AIDS Project in Claremont, will speak on the current state of HIV and the AIDS epidemics in 21 st century America. The American face of HIV has changed drastically in the last 20 years, and while transmission routes stay the same, the at-risk populations look very different. Laura will answer questions about the socioeconomic, cultural, racial, and health factors that can act as barriers to prevention and care for HIV and AIDS in our community today, and what we can do as a community to help. Foothill AIDS Project (FAP) was founded in 1987, and is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization providing comprehensive services to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Claremont and the surrounding communities. RSVP with Dean McVay at deanmcvay@hotmail.com or by April 21. Suggested Donation (for the catered lunch): $10 each, if you are able. ALL are welcome!
2 Wileyan Wisdom I noticed how quickly society moves on from Easter. It s the Monday after Easter and almost every trace of Easter is gone, except in churches. There are no massive after Easter sales. No residue Easter displays. No reluctance to leave decorations up for another day. Even the White House Easter Egg hunt on the day after Easter seems out of place. The world has moved on. Think about how different this is from Christmas. Christmas captures everyone. The Christmas Spirit has been known to capture Hindus and Muslims, Jews and Buddhists, atheists and nones, liturgy loving Episcopalians, and liturgy hating Puritans, rock and roll Charismatics and Bible believing Baptists. Even the Grinch eventually succumbed to the Christmas Spirit. But Easter is quickly dismantled and shelved as quickly as possible. As if, we were embarrassed by our participation in Easter. Christmas does make a better story. There are Magi, shepherds, angels. There is an unmarried couple having a baby away from home. There is a star, a manger, and an inn. There are gifts. Presents! The story even had its own villain in Herod. And of course, a baby. Easter doesn t have much. An empty tomb. A couple of angels who don t sing. No presents. Maybe a gardener. Three women probably dressed in black going to a funeral. And they don t even take flowers. But our Easter reluctance runs deeper. It s one thing to ooh and ahh over a baby, or to admire his teachings when he grows up. It s a different thing entirely to come face to face with a dead man now rising. I think people feel threatened by Easter. Oh, they are willing to embrace the idea of Easter; that there is some form of life after death. But the Easter message is that Christ is alive and well; no longer subject to the constraints of time or space or death. Jesus could drop by our house or our heart, and call us by name. If we limit Easter to one day, and focus on bunnies and chocolate, or pretend it s a hoax or a nice story or something no modern person would believe, then we do not have to make any changes in our lives or our souls. The key to managing Easter is to treat it like an old family ritual that we indulge in for the sake of making others happy. Hands off. Guard up. And yet...there is something in the story that whispers to us. Maybe we want to believe it s more than a fairy tale. Maybe we need a once a year dose of hope. Maybe it s the mystery of how a leaderless movement transforms the world. Maybe to believe in seeing loved ones again we need to be reassured. Maybe we need to hear our name being called. The church has realized that Easter is more than just a day. Easter is at least a season. Jesus keeps showing up--behind the security gates, on the beach, at home, and on the road. But even a season isn t enough. So in the church s thinking every Sunday is a remembrance and retelling of the Easter story. Here s to celebrating a year s worth of Easters with you! Peace, Pastor Mark 2

If the only constant is change, why is it so hard for us to deal with it? Sometimes we feel God s presence at when we encounter life-changing events; other times we feel lost. Sometimes we want to celebrate; other times we want to forget. Seeking God in Life Transitions, is an eight-week study that equips participants to respond when faced with expected and unexpected life transitions -- retirement, kids leaving home, death of a loved one, change of jobs, divorce, coming out, birth of a child, illness, or marriage. Led by Paula Hui, the study begins the week of May 1. Join us for the introductory session at Paula s home in Claremont on Wednesday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m., or Friday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m., to view The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We ll consider the film in new ways, so come even if you have already seen it. At those gatherings we will decide whether to meet Wednesday evenings or Friday mornings for the rest of the study. The movie runs about two hours; after the first session, we ll meet each week for 90 minutes. Participants should plan to attend at least six of the eight sessions. For more information contact Paula Hui [huihouse@gmail.com].
